Quapropter intermittentes inchoationis Christi sermonem,Therefore, interrupting an explanation of the basics of Christ,ad perfectiora feramur, non rursum jacientes fundamentum pœnitentiæ ab operibus mortuis, let us consider what is more advanced, not presenting again the fundamentals of repentance from dead works,et fidei ad Deum, and of faith toward God,
baptismatum doctrinæ,of the doctrine of baptism, impositionis quoque manuum, and also of the imposition of hands,ac resurrectionis mortuorum, and of the resurrection of the dead,et judicii æterni.and of eternal judgment.
Et hoc faciemus,And we shall do this,si quidem permiserit Deus.if indeed God permits it.
Impossibile est enim eos qui semel sunt illuminati,For it is impossible for those who were once illuminated, gustaverunt etiam donum cæleste, and have even tasted of the heavenly gift,et participes facti sunt Spiritus Sancti, and have become sharers in the Holy Spirit,
gustaverunt nihilominus bonum Dei verbum, who, despite having tasted the good Word of God and the virtues of the future age, virtutesque sæculi venturi, have yet fallen away,
et prolapsi sunt;to be renewed again to penance, rursus renovari ad pœnitentiam, rursum crucifigentes sibimetipsis Filium Dei, et ostentui habentes.since they are crucifying again in themselves the Son of God and are still maintaining pretenses.
Terra enim sæpe venientem super se bibens imbrem,For the earth accepts a blessing from God,et generans herbam opportunam illis,by drinking in the rain that often falls upon it,a quibus colitur, accipit benedictionem a Deo:and by producing plants that are useful to those by whom it is cultivated.
proferens autem spinas ac tribulos,But whatever brings forth thornsreproba est,and briers is rejected,et maledicto proxima:and is closest to what is accursed;cujus consummatio in combustionem.their consummation is in combustion.
Confidimus autem de vobis dilectissimi meliora, et viciniora saluti: tametsi ita loquimur. But from you, most beloved, we are confident that there will be things better and closer to salvation; even though we speak in this way.
Non enim injustus Deus,For God is not unjust,ut obliviscatur operis vestri, such that he would forget your worket dilectionis, and the love that you have shown in his name.quam ostendistis in nomine ipsius,For you have ministered, qui ministrastis sanctis, and you continue to minister,et ministratis.to the saints.
Cupimus autem unumquemque vestrum eamdem ostentare sollicitudinem ad expletionem spei usque in finem:Yet we desire that each one of you display the same solicitude toward the fulfillment of hope, even unto the end,
ut non segnes efficiamini,so that you may not be slow to act, verum imitatores eorum, but instead may be imitators of those who,qui fide, through faith and patience,et patientia hæreditabunt promissiones.shall inherit the promises.
Abrahæ namque promittens Deus,For God, in making promises to Abraham, quoniam neminem habuit, swore by himself, per quem juraret, majorem, juravit per semetipsum,(because he had no one greater by whom he might swear),
dicens:saying:Nisi benedicens benedicam te,“Blessing, I shall bless you,et multiplicans multiplicabo te.and multiplying, I shall multiply you.”
Et sic longanimiter ferens,And in this way, by enduring patiently, adeptus est repromissionem.he secured the promise.
Homines enim per majorem sui jurant:For men swear by what is greater than themselves,et omnis controversiæ eorum finis, ad confirmationem, est juramentum.and an oath as confirmation is the end of all their controversy.
In quo abundantius volens Deus ostendere pollicitationis hæredibus, immobilitatem consilii sui, interposuit jusjurandum:In this matter, God, wanting to reveal more thoroughly the immutability of his counsel to the heirs of the promise, interposed an oath,
ut per duas res immobiles,so that by two immutable things, quibus impossibile est mentiri Deum,in which it is impossible for God to lie, fortissimum solatium habeamus,we may have the strongest solace:qui confugimus ad tenendam propositam spem,we who have fled together so as to hold fast to the hope set before us.
quam sicut anchoram habemus animæ tutamThis we have as an anchor of the soul,ac firmam, safe and sound,et incedentem usque ad interiora velaminis, which advances even to the interior of the veil,
ubi præcursor pro nobis introivit Jesus,to the place where the forerunner Jesus has entered on our behalf, secundum ordinem Melchisedech pontifex factus in æternum.so as to become the High Priest for eternity, according to the order of Melchizedek.
