Omnis anima potestatibus sublimioribus subdita sit:Let every soul be subject to higher authorities.non est enim potestas nisi a Deo: quæ autem sunt, a Deo ordinatæ sunt. For there is no authority except from God and those who have been ordained by God.

Itaque qui resistit potestati,And so,Dei ordinationi resistit.whoever resists authority,Qui autem resistunt, resists what has been ordained by God.ipsi sibi damnationem acquirunt:And those who resist are acquiring damnation for themselves.

nam principes non sunt timori boni operis,For leaders are not a source of fear to those who work good, sed mali.but to those who work evil.Vis autem non timere potestatem? And would you prefer not to be afraid of authority?Bonum fac:Then do what is good,et habebis laudem ex illa:and you shall have praise from them.

Dei enim minister est tibi in bonum. For he is a minister of God for you unto good.Si autem malum feceris,But if you do what is evil, time:be afraid.non enim sine causa gladium portat. For it is not without reason that he carries a sword.Dei enim minister est:For he is a minister of God;vindex in iram ei qui malum agit.an avenger to execute wrath upon whomever does evil.

Ideo necessitate subditi estote non solum propter iram,For this reason, it is necessary to be subject, not solely because of wrath, sed etiam propter conscientiam.but also because of conscience.

Ideo enimTherefore,et tributa præstatis:you must also offer tribute.ministri enim Dei sunt,For they are the ministers of God,in hoc ipsum servientes.serving him in this.

Reddite ergo omnibus debita:Therefore, render to all whatever is owed.cui tributum, tributum:Taxes, to whom taxes is due;cui vectigal, vectigal:revenue, to whom revenue is due;cui timorem, timorem:fear, to whom fear is due;cui honorem, honorem.honor, to whom honor is due.

Nemini quidquam debeatis,You should owe nothing to anyone, nisi ut invicem diligatis:except so as to love one another.qui enim diligit proximum, legem implevit. For whoever loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.

Nam:For example:Non adulterabis:You shall not commit adultery.non occides:You shall not kill.non furaberis:You shall not steal.non falsum testimonium dices:You shall not speak false testimony.non concupisces:You shall not covet.et si quod est aliud mandatum,And if there is any other commandment,in hoc verbo instauratur:it is summed up in this word:diliges proximum tuum sicut teipsum. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Dilectio proximi malum non operatur. The love of neighbor does no harm. Therefore,Plenitudo ergo legis est dilectio.love is the plenitude of the law.

Et hoc scientes tempus:And we know the present time, quia hora est jam nos de somno surgere.that now is the hour for us to rise up from sleep.Nunc enim propior est nostra salus, quam cum credidimus. For already our salvation is closer than when we first believed.

Nox præcessit,The night has passed, dies autem appropinquavit.and the day draws near. Therefore,Abjiciamus ergo opera tenebrarum, let us cast aside the works of darkness,et induamur arma lucis.and be clothed with the armor of light.

Sicut in die honeste ambulemus:Let us walk honestly, as in the daylight, non in comessationibus, et ebrietatibus, not in carousing and drunkenness, non in cubilibus, et impudicitiis, not in promiscuity and sexual immorality, non in contentione, et æmulatione:not in contention and envy.

sed induimini Dominum Jesum Christum,Instead, be clothed with the Lord Jesus Christ,et carnis curam ne feceritis in desideriis.and make no provision for the flesh in its desires.
