1Et hæc verba libri quæ scripsit Baruch filius Neriæ,And these are the words of the book, which Baruch the son of Neraiah,filii Maasiæ,the son of Mahseiah,filii Sedeciæ,the son of Zedekiah,filii Sedei,the son of Hasadiah,filii Helciæ,the son Hilkiah,in Babylonia,wrote in Babylon,

2in anno quinto,in the fifth year,in septimo die mensis,on the seventh day of the month,in tempore quo ceperunt Chaldæi Jerusalem,since the time when the Chaldeans captured Jerusalemet succenderunt eam igni.and set it on fire.

3Et legit Baruch verba libri hujus ad aures Jechoniæ filii Joakim regis Juda,And Baruch read the words of this book to the ears of Jeconiah, the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah,et ad aures universi populi venientis ad librum,and to the ears of the entire people, who came to the book:

4et ad aures potentium, filiorum regum,even to the ears of the powerful sons of kings,et ad aures presbyterorum,and to the ears of the elders,et ad aures populi,and to the ears of the people,a minimo usque ad maximum eorum,from the least to the greatest of them,omnium habitantium in Babylonia,of all those living in Babylon,ad flumen Sodi.near the river Sud.

5Qui audientes plorabant,And upon hearing it,et jejunabant, et orabant in conspectu Domini.they wept and fasted and prayed in the sight of the Lord.

6Et collegerunt pecuniam, secundum quod potuit uniuscujusque manus,And they collected money in accordance with whatever each one was able to handover.

7et miserunt in Jerusalem ad Joakim filium Helciæ filii Salom sacerdotem,And they sent it to Jerusalem to Jehoiakim, the son of Hilkiah, the son of Shalum the priest,et ad sacerdotes,and to the priests,et ad omnem populum qui inventi sunt cum eo in Jerusalem:and to all the people, who were found with him in Jerusalem.

8cum acciperet vasa templi Domini, quæ ablata fuerant de templo,At that time, he received the vessels of the temple of the Lord (which had been carried away from the temple) so as to return them to the land of Judah,revocare in terram Juda,on the tenth day of the month Sivan.decima die mensis Sivan,These were the silver vessels,vasa argentea quæ fecit Sedecias filius Josiæ rex Juda,which Zedekiah, the son of Josiah king of Judah, had made.

9posteaquam cepisset Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis Jechoniam,After this, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon,et principes, et cunctos potentes,captured Jeconiah, and the leaders,et populum terræ,and all the powerful,ab Jerusalem, et duxit eos vinctos in Babylonem.and the people of the land, and led them captive from Jerusalem to Babylon.

10Et dixerunt:And they said,Ecce misimus ad vos pecunias,“Behold we have sent you money with which to buy holocaustsde quibus emite holocautomata et thus:and frankincense.et facite manna,Therefore,et offerte pro peccato,make mannaad aram Domini Dei nostri:and offer it for sin at the altar of the Lord our God.

11et orate pro vita Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis,And pray for the life of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon,et pro vita Baltassar filii ejus,and for the life of Belshazzar his son,ut sint dies eorum sicut dies cæli super terram:so that their days may be just like the days of the heaven above the earth,

12et ut det Dominus virtutem nobis,and so that the Lord may give virtue to us,et illuminet oculos nostros,and enlighten our eyes,ut vivamus sub umbra Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis,so that we may live under the shadow of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon,et sub umbra Baltassar filii ejus,and under the shadow of Belshazzar his son,et serviamus eis multis diebus,and so that we may serve them for many dayset inveniamus gratiam in conspectu eorum.and may find favor in their sight.

13Et pro nobis ipsis orate ad Dominum Deum nostrum,And pray for us also to the Lord our God,quia peccavimus Domino Deo nostro,for we have sinned against the Lord our God,et non est aversus furor ejus a nobis usque in hunc diem.and the madness of our sin has not been driven away from us even to this day.

14Et legite librum istum quem misimus ad vos recitari in templo Domini,And read this book,in die solemniwhich we have sent to you to be recited in the temple of the Lord,et in die opportuno:on solemn days and on other suitable days.

15et dicetis:And you will say,Domino Deo nostro justitia,‘To the Lord our God is justice,nobis autem confusio faciei nostræ,but to us is confusion of our face,sicut est dies hæc omni Juda,just as it is this day for all of Judahet habitantibus in Jerusalem:and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

16regibus nostris,even for our kings,et principibus nostris,and our leaders,et sacerdotibus nostris,and our priests,et prophetis nostris,and our prophets,et patribus nostris.and our fathers.

17Peccavimus ante Dominum Deum nostrum,We have sinned before the Lord our Godet non credidimus,and we have not believed,diffidentes in eum:lacking confidence in him.

18et non fuimus subjectibiles illi,And we have not been submissive to him,et non audivimus vocem Domini Dei nostri,and we have not listened to the voice of the Lord our God,ut ambularemus in mandatis ejus,so as to walk in his commandments,quæ dedit nobis.which he has given to us.

19A die qua eduxit patres nostros de terra Ægypti,From the day that he led our fathers out of the land of Egypt,usque ad diem hanc,even to this day,eramus incredibiles ad Dominum Deum nostrum:we were unfaithful to the Lord our God, and,et dissipati recessimus,having been scattered, we fell away.ne audiremus vocem ipsius:We did not listen to his voice.

20et adhæserunt nobis multa mala et maledictiones quæ constituit Dominus Moysi servo suo,And we joined ourselves to many evils and to the curses which the Lord established through Moses, his servant,qui eduxit patres nostros de terra Ægypti,who led our fathers out of the land of Egypt,dare nobis terram fluentem lac et mel,to give us a land flowing with milk and honey,sicut hodierna die.just as it is in the present day.

21Et non audivimus vocem Domini Dei nostri,And we have not listened to the voice of the Lord our God,secundum omnia verba prophetarum quos misit ad nos:according to all the words of the prophets whom he sent to us.

22et abivimus unusquisque in sensum cordis nostri maligni,And we have gone astray,operari diis alienis,each one after the inclinations of his own malignant heart,facientes mala ante oculos Domini Dei nostri.serving strange gods and doing evil before the eyes of the Lord our God.
