Propter quod statuit Dominus Deus noster verbum suum,“‘For this reason, the Lord our God has fulfilled his word, quod locutus est ad nos, which he has spoken to us,et ad judices nostros qui judicaverunt Israël,and to our judges, who have judged Israel,et ad reges nostros, and to our kings,et ad principes nostros, and to our leaders,et ad omnem Israël et Juda:and to all Israel and Judah.
ut adduceret Dominus super nos mala magna,And so the Lord has brought upon us great evils,quæ non sunt facta sub cælo quemadmodum facta sunt in Jerusalem, such as never before happened under heaven, secundum quæ scripta sunt in lege Moysi,(but which have come to pass in Jerusalem according to what was written in the law of Moses)
et manducaret homo carnes filii sui et carnes filiæ suæ.even that a man would eat the flesh of his son and the flesh of his daughter.
Et dedit eos sub manu regum omnium qui sunt in circuitu nostro,And so he placed them under the hand of all the kings who surround us,in improperium et in desolationem in omnibus populis in quibus nos dispersit Dominus:in disgrace and desolation among all the people where the Lord has scattered us.
et facti sumus subtus,And we were brought down lowet non supra, and were not raised up,quia peccavimus Domino Deo nostro, because we sinned against the Lord our God,non obaudiendo voci ipsius.by not obeying his voice.
Domino Deo nostro justitia,To the Lord our God is justice, nobis autem et patribus nostris confusio faciei, but to us and to our fathers is confusion of face, sicut est dies hæc:just as on this day.
quia locutus est Dominus super nos omnia mala hæc quæ venerunt super nos:For the Lord has pronounced against us all these evils, which have overcome us.
et non sumus deprecati faciem Domini Dei nostri,And we have not beseeched the face of the Lord our God,ut reverteremur unusquisque nostrum a viis nostris pessimis.so that we might return, each one of us from our most sinful ways.
Et vigilavit Dominus in malis,And the Lord has watched over us for evilet adduxit ea super nos:and has brought it upon us,quia justus est Dominus in omnibus operibus suis quæ mandavit nobis, because the Lord is just in all his works that he has commanded us,
et non audivimus vocem ipsius ut iremus in præceptis Domini, and we have not listened to his own voice, so as to walk according to the teachings of the Lord,quæ dedit ante faciem nostram.which he has set before our face.
Et nunc,And now,Domine Deus Israël,O Lord God of Israel, qui eduxisti populum tuum de terra Ægypti in manu valida, who has led your people out of the land of Egypt with a strong hand,et in signis, and with signs,et in prodigiis, and with wonders,et in virtute tua magna, and with your great power,et in brachio excelso, and with an exalted arm,et fecisti tibi nomen sicut est dies iste:and has made a name for yourself, just as on this day,
peccavimus,we have sinned,impie egimus,we have become impious,inique gessimus,we have acted unjustly,Domine Deus noster,O Lord our God,in omnibus justitiis tuis.against all your principles.
Avertatur ira tua a nobis,May your wrath be turned away from us because, quia derelicti sumus pauci inter gentes ubi dispersisti nos.having been forsaken, we are few among the irreligious where you have scattered us.
Exaudi,Heed,Domine,O Lord, preces nostras et orationes nostras, our petitions and our prayers,et educ nos propter te,and deliver us for your own sake,et da nobis invenire gratiam ante faciem eorum qui nos abduxerunt:and grant that we may find favor before the face of those who have led us away,
ut sciat omnis terra quia tu es Dominus Deus noster,so that all the earth may know that you are the Lord our God,et quia nomen tuum invocatum est super Israël,and because your name has been invoked over Israelet super genus ipsius.and over his posterity.
Respice,Gaze upon us,Domine,O Lord,de domo sancta tua in nos, from your holy home,et inclina aurem tuam, and incline your ear,et exaudi nos.and heed us.
Aperi oculos tuos et vide:Open your eyes and see, quia non mortui qui sunt in inferno, because the dead, who are in the underworld, quorum spiritus acceptus est a visceribus suis, whose spirit has been taken away from their vital organs, dabunt honorem et justificationem Domino:will not give honor and justification to the Lord.
sed anima quæ tristis est super magnitudine mali,But the soul that is sorrowful for the greatness of evil,et incedit curva et infirma, et oculi deficientes, approaches bowed down and weak,et anima esuriens, dat tibi gloriam et justitiam Domino.and the failing eyes and the hungering soul give glory and justice to you, the Lord.
Quia non secundum justitias patrum nostrorum nos fundimus preces et petimus misericordiam ante conspectum tuum,For it is not according to the righteousness of our fathers that we pour out our petitions and beg mercy in your sight,Domine Deus noster:O Lord our God,
sed quia misisti iram tuam et furorem tuum super nos,but because you have sent your wrath and your fury upon us,sicut locutus es in manu puerorum tuorum prophetarum, just as you have spoken by the hand of your children the prophets, dicens:saying:
Sic dicit Dominus:“Thus says the Lord,Inclinate humerum vestrum et cervicem vestram,‘Bow down your shoulder and your neck,et opera facite regi Babylonis, and do work for the king of Babylon,et sedebitis in terra quam dedi patribus vestris.and settle in the land which I gave to your fathers,
Quod si non audieritis vocem Domini Dei vestri, because, operari regi Babyloniæ,if you will not listen to the voice of the Lord your God,defectionem vestram faciam de civitatibus Juda,to serve the king of Babylon,et a foris Jerusalem,I will cause you to depart from the cities of Judah and from the gates of Jerusalem.
et auferam a vobis vocem jucunditatis et vocem gaudii,And I will take away from you the voice of cheerfulness and the voice of joy,et vocem sponsi et vocem sponsæ,and the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride,et erit omnis terra sine vestigio ab inhabitantibus eam.and all the land will be without any trace of its inhabitants.’”
Et non audierunt vocem tuam,And they did not listen to your voice,ut operarentur regi Babylonis:that they should serve the king of Babylon,et statuisti verba tua,and so you have fulfilled your words,quæ locutus es in manibus puerorum tuorum prophetarum, which you spoke by the hands of your children the prophets,ut transferrentur ossa regum nostrorum et ossa patrum nostrorum de loco suo:so that the bones of our kings and the bones of our fathers would be carried away from their place.
et ecce projecta sunt in calore solis et in gelu noctis,And, behold, they have been cast out into the heat of the sun and the frost of the night,et mortui sunt in doloribus pessimis, and they have died by means of grievous evils,in fame et in gladio,by famine, and by the sword,et in emissione.and by banishment.
Et posuisti templum in quo invocatum est nomen tuum in ipso sicut hæc dies,And you have set up the temple, in which your name itself was called upon, just as it is on this day, propter iniquitatem domus Israël et domus Juda.because of the iniquity of the house of Israel and the house of Judah.
Et fecisti in nobis,And you have accomplished in us,Domine Deus noster,O Lord our God,secundum omnem bonitatem tuam et secundum omnem miserationem tuam illam magnam:according to all your goodness and according to all your great mercy,
sicut locutus es in manu pueri tui Moysi, just as you spoke by the hand of your child Moses,in die qua præcepisti ei scribere legem tuam coram filiis Israël,in the day when you commanded him to write your law before the sons of Israel,
dicens:saying:Si non audieritis vocem meam,“If you will not listen to my voice, multitudo hæc magna convertetur in minimam inter gentes, this great multitude will be changed into the least among the peoples, quo ego eos dispergam:where I will scatter them.
quia scio quod me non audiet populus:For I know that the people will not listen to me,populus est enim dura cervice.for the people are stiff necked.Et convertetur ad cor suum in terra captivitatis suæ,But they will have a change of their heart in the land of their captivity,
et scient quia ego sum Dominus Deus eorum:and they will know that I am the Lord their God.et dabo eis cor,And I will give them a heart,et intelligent;and they will understand, aures, ears,et audient:and they will hear.
et laudabunt me in terra captivitatis suæ,And they will praise me in the land of their captivity,et memores erunt nominis mei,and will remember my name.
et avertent se a dorso suo duro,And they will turn themselves away from their stiff back,et a malignitatibus suis:and from their wicked deeds, quia reminiscentur viam patrum suorum, for they will call to mind the way of their fathers, qui peccaverunt in me.who sinned against me.
Et revocabo illos in terram quam juravi patribus eorum,And I will restore them to the land which I pledged to their fathers,Abraham,Abraham,Isaac,Isaac,et Jacob:and Jacob,et dominabuntur ejus, and they will rule over it,et multiplicabo eos,and I will multiply them,et non minorabuntur:and they will not be diminished.
et statuam illis testamentum alterum sempiternum,And I will establish for them a new and everlasting covenant,ut sim illis in Deum, et ipsi erunt mihi in populum:so that I will be their God and they will be my people.et non movebo amplius populum meum,And I will no longer move my people, filios Israël,the sons of Israel,a terra quam dedi illis.out of the land which I have given them.”
