Et venerunt ad me viri seniorum Israël,And men among the elders of Israel came to me,et sederunt coram me.and they sat down before me.

Et factus est sermo Domini ad me,And the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:

Fili hominis,“Son of man, viri isti posuerunt immunditias suas in cordibus suis, these men have placed their uncleanness in their hearts,et scandalum iniquitatis suæ statuerunt contra faciem suam:and they have stationed the scandal of their iniquities before their face.numquid interrogatus respondebo eis?So why should I respond when they inquire of me?

Propter hoc loquere eis,Because of this, speak to them,et dices ad eos:and you shall say to them:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God: The man,Homo, homo de domo Israël,the man of the house of Israel, qui posuerit immunditias suas in corde suo,who places his uncleanness in his heart,et scandalum iniquitatis suæ statuerit contra faciem suam, and who stations the scandal of his iniquities before his face,et venerit ad prophetam interrogans per eum me:and who approaches a prophet, so as to inquire of me through him:ego Dominus respondebo ei in multitudine immunditiarum suarum,I, the Lord, will respond to him in accord with the multitude of his uncleannesses,

ut capiatur domus Israël in corde suo,so that the house of Israel may be seized within their own heart, quo recesserunt a me in cunctis idolis suis.by which they have withdrawn from me to all their idols.

Propterea dic ad domum Israël:Because of this, say to the house of Israel:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God:Convertimini,Be converted,et recedite ab idolis vestris, and withdraw from your idols,et ab universis contaminationibus vestris avertite facies vestras.and turn your faces away from all your abominations.

Quia homo,For the man, homo de domo Israël,the man of the house of Israel,et de proselytis quicumque advena fuerit in Israël,and the new arrival among the converts who may be in Israel,si alienatus fuerit a me,if he is alienated from me,et posuerit idola sua in corde suo,and he sets his idols in his heart,et scandalum iniquitatis suæ statuerit contra faciem suam, and he stations the scandal of his iniquity before his face,et venerit ad prophetam ut interroget per eum me:and he approaches the prophet, so that he may inquire of me through him: I,ego Dominus respondebo ei per me:the Lord, will respond to him through myself.

et ponam faciem meam super hominem illum,And I will set my face against that man,et faciam eum in exemplum et in proverbium, and I will make him an example and a proverb.et disperdam eum de medio populi mei:And I will perish him from the midst of my people.et scietis quia ego Dominus. And you shall know that I am the Lord.

Et propheta cum erraverit, et locutus fuerit verbum,And when a prophet has gone astray and has spoken a word: I,ego Dominus decepi prophetam illum, the Lord, have deceived that prophet.et extendam manum meam super illum,And I will extend my hand over him,et delebo eum de medio populi mei Israël.and I will wipe him away from the midst of my people, Israel.

Et portabunt iniquitatem suam:And they shall bear their iniquity.juxta iniquitatem interrogantis,In accord with the iniquity of the one who inquires, sic iniquitas prophetæ erit:so shall the iniquity of the prophet be.

ut non erret ultra domus Israël a me, neque polluatur in universis prævaricationibus suis:So may the house of Israel no longer go astray from me, nor be polluted by all their transgressions.sed sint mihi in populum,Instead, may they be my people,et ego sim eis in Deum, and may I be their God,ait Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.”

Et factus est sermo Domini ad me,And the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:

Fili hominis,“Son of man, terra cum peccaverit mihi, when a land will have sinned against me,ut prævaricetur prævaricans,so that it transgresses grievously, extendam manum meam super eam,I will extend my hand over it,et conteram virgam panis ejus, and I will crush the staff of its bread.et immittam in eam famem,And I will send a famine upon it,et interficiam de ea hominem et jumentum.and I will destroy from it both man and beast.

Et si fuerint tres viri isti in medio ejus,And if these three men,Noë,Noah,Daniel,Daniel,et Job,and Job,ipsi justitia sua liberabunt animas suas, were in it, they would deliver their own souls by their justice, ait Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.

Quod siAnd if I also lead in very harmful beasts upon the land,et bestias pessimas induxero super terram ut vastem eam,so that I devastate it,et fuerit invia, and it becomes impassable,eo quod non sit pertransiens propter bestias:so that no one may cross through it because of the beasts,

tres viri isti si fuerint in ea,if these three men were in it,vivo ego,as I live, dicit Dominus Deus, says the Lord God,quia nec filios nec filias liberabunt, they will deliver neither sons, nor daughters.sed ipsi soli liberabuntur,But only they themselves will be delivered, terra autem desolabitur.for the land shall be desolated.

Vel si gladium induxero super terram illam,Or if I lead in the sword upon that land,et dixero gladio:and if I say to the sword,Transi per terram:‘Pass through the land,’et interfecero de ea hominem et jumentum, and so I destroy from it both man and beast,

et tres viri isti fuerint in medio ejus:and if these three men were in its midst, vivo ego,as I live, dicit Dominus Deus, says the Lord God,non liberabunt filiosthey will deliver neither sons, neque filias, nor daughters, sed ipsi soli liberabuntur.but only they themselves will be delivered.

Si autem et pestilentiam immisero super terram illam,Then, if I also send the pestilence upon that land,et effudero indignationem meam super eam in sanguine, and I pour out my indignation upon it with blood,ut auferam ex ea hominem et jumentum,so that I take away from it both man and beast,

et Noë,and if Noah,et Daniel, and Daniel,et Job fuerint in medio ejus:and Job were in its midst, vivo ego,as I live, dicit Dominus Deus, says the Lord God,quia filiumthey will deliver neither son,et filiam non liberabunt, nor daughter, sed ipsi justitia sua liberabunt animas suas.but they will deliver only their own souls by their justice.

Quoniam hæc dicit Dominus Deus:For thus says the Lord God:Quod etsi quatuor judicia mea pessima,Even though I will send upon Jerusalem my four most grievous judgments, gladium, swordet famem, and famineac bestias malas, and harmful beastset pestilentiam, and pestilence, immisero in Jerusalem,so that I destroy from it both manut interficiam de ea hominem et pecus, and beast,

tamen relinquetur in ea salvatio educentium filiosyet still there shall be left within it some who will be saved,et filias:who shall lead away their own sons and daughters.ecce ipsi ingredientur ad vos,Behold,et videbitis viam eorumthey will enter to you,et adinventiones eorum, and you will see their way and their accomplishments.et consolabimini super malo quod induxi in Jerusalem,And you shall be consoled concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem,in omnibus quæ importavi super eam.concerning all the things that I have brought to bear upon it.

Et consolabuntur vos,And they shall console you,cum videritis viam eorum et adinventiones eorum:when you see their ways and their accomplishments.et cognoscetis quod non frustra fecerim omnia quæ feci in ea,And you shall know that I have not acted to no purpose in all that I have done within it,ait Dominus Deus.says the Lord God.”
