Et factus est sermo Domini ad me,And the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:
Fili hominis,“Son of man, quid fiet de ligno vitis, what can be made from the stalk of a vine,ex omnibus lignis nemorum quæ sunt inter ligna silvarum?compared to all the plants of the woods that are among the trees of the forests?
numquid tolletur de ea lignum ut fiat opus,Can any wood be taken from it, so that it may be made into a work, aut fabricabitur de ea paxillus ut dependeat in eo quodcumque vas?or formed into a peg so as to hang some kind of vessel upon it?
Ecce igni datum est in escam:Behold, it is used in the fire as fuel.utramque partem ejus consumpsit ignis,The fire consumes both its ends;et medietas ejus redacta est in favillam: numquid utile erit ad opus?and its middle is reduced to ashes. So how can it be useful for any work?
Etiam cum esset integrum,Even when it was whole, non erat aptum ad opus:it was unsuitable for a work.quanto magis cum illud ignis devoraveritHow much more so,et combusserit, when fire has devoured it and burned it up,nihil ex eo fiet operis?will nothing of it be useful?
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Therefore, thus says the Lord God:Quomodo lignum vitis inter ligna silvarum,Like the stalk of the vine among the trees of the forests, quod dedi igni ad devorandum, which I have given to be devoured by fire, sic tradam habitatores Jerusalem.so will I deliver the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Et ponam faciem meam in eos:And I will set my face against them.de igne egredientur,They will go away from fire,et ignis consumet eos:and yet fire will consume them.et scietis quia ego Dominus,And you shall know that I am the Lord, cum posuero faciem meam in eos, when I will have set my face against them,
et dedero terram inviam et desolatam, and when I will have made their land impassable and desolate.eo quod prævaricatores extiterint,For they have stood forth as transgressors, dicit Dominus Deus.says the Lord God.”
