Et factus est sermo Domini ad me,And the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:

Fili hominis,“Son of man, notas fac Jerusalem abominationes suas, make known to Jerusalem her abominations.

et dices:And you shall say:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Jerusalem:Thus says the Lord God to Jerusalem:Radix tua et generatio tua de terra Chanaan:Your root and your lineage is from the land of Canaan;pater tuus Amorrhæus,your father was an Amorite,et mater tua Cethæa.and your mother was a Cethite.

Et quando nata es,And when you were born,in die ortus tui non est præcisus umbilicus tuus,on the day of your nativity, your umbilical cord was not cut,et aqua non es lota in salutem, and you were not washed with water for health, nec sale salita, nor salted with salt, nec involuta pannis.nor wrapped with cloths.

Non pepercit super te oculus, ut faceret tibi unum de his, misertus tui: sed projecta es super faciem terræ in abjectione animæ tuæ in die qua nata es.No eye took pity on you, so as to do even one of these things to you, out of compassion for you. Instead, you were cast upon the face of the earth, in the abjection of your soul, on the day when you were born.

Transiens autem per te,But, passing by you, vidi te conculcari in sanguine tuo:I saw that you were wallowing in your own blood.et dixi tibi cum esses in sanguine tuo:And I said to you, when you were in your blood:Vive,‘Live.’dixi, inquam, tibi:I tell you that I said to you,in sanguine tuo vive.in your blood: ‘Live.’

Multiplicatam quasi germen agri dedi te:I multiplied you like the seedling of the field.et multiplicata es,And you were multipliedet grandis effecta, and became great,et ingressa es,and you advancedet pervenisti ad mundum muliebrem:and arrived at the ornament of a woman.ubera tua intumuerunt,Your breasts rose up,et pilus tuus germinavit:and your hair grew.et eras nuda,And you were nakedet confusione plena.and full of shame.

Et transivi per te,And I passed by youet vidi te:and saw you.et ecce tempus tuum,And behold, tempus amantium:your time was the time of lovers.et expandi amictum meum super te,And I spread my garment over you,et operui ignominiam tuam:and I covered your disgrace.et juravi tibi,And I swore to you,et ingressus sum pactum tecum, and I entered into a covenant with you,ait Dominus Deus, says the Lord God,et facta es mihi.and you became mine.

Et lavi te aqua,And I washed you with water,et emundavi sanguinem tuum ex te,and I cleansed you of your blood.et unxi te oleo. And I anointed you with oil.

Et vestivi te discoloribus,And I covered you with embroidery,et calceavi te janthino, and I put violet shoes upon you,et cinxi te bysso, and I wrapped you in fine linen,et indui te subtilibus:and I clothed you with delicate garments.

et ornavi te ornamento,I adorned you with ornaments,et dedi armillas in manibus tuis, and I put bracelets upon your handset torquem circa collum tuum:and a necklace around your neck.

et dedi inaurem super os tuum,And I put gold upon your face,et circulos auribus tuis, and earrings in your ears,et coronam decoris in capite tuo.and a beautiful crown upon your head.

Et ornata es auro et argento,And you were adorned with gold and silver,et vestita es bysso et polymito et multicoloribus: similam, and you were clothed in fine linen, woven with many colors.et mel, et oleum comedisti:You ate fine flour, and honey,et decora facta es vehementer nimis, and oil. And you became very beautiful.et profecisti in regnum. And you advanced to royal power.

Et egressum est nomen tuum in gentes propter speciem tuam,And your renown went forth among the Gentiles, because of your beauty.quia perfecta eras in decore meo quem posueram super te,For you were perfected by my beauty, which I had placed upon you, dicit Dominus Deus.says the Lord God.

Et habens fiduciam in pulchritudine tua,But, having confidence in your own beauty, fornicata es in nomine tuo:you fornicated in your fame.et exposuisti fornicationem tuam omni transeunti,And you presented your fornication to every passer-by,ut ejus fieres.so as to become his.

Et sumens de vestimentis tuis,And taking from your garments, fecisti tibi excelsa hinc inde consuta, you made for yourself exalted things, having sewed together disparate pieces.et fornicata es super eis sicut non est factum,And you fornicated upon them, in a way that has not been done before, neque futurum est.nor will be in the future.

Et tulisti vasa decoris tui de auro meoAnd you took your beautiful items, atque argento meo, made of my gold and my silver,quæ dedi tibi, which I gave to you,et fecisti tibi imagines masculinas, and you made for yourself images of men,et fornicata es in eis.and you fornicated with them.

Et sumpsisti vestimenta tua multicoloria,And you used your multicolored vestments to cover these things.et operuisti illas,And you placed my oilet oleum meum et thymiama meum posuisti coram eis.and my incense before them.

Et panem meum quem dedi tibi,And my bread, which I gave to you, similam, the fine flour,et oleum, and the oil,et mel, quibus enutrivi te,and the honey, by which I nourished you, posuisti in conspectu eorum in odorem suavitatis:you placed in their sight as a sweet fragrance.et factum est,And so it was done, ait Dominus Deus.says the Lord God.

Et tulisti filios tuosAnd you took your sons and your daughters,et filias tuas quas generasti mihi, whom you bore for me,et immolasti eis ad devorandum.and you immolated them to be devoured.Numquid parva est fornicatio tua?Is your fornication a small matter?

Immolasti filios meos,You have immolated my sons,et dedisti, illos consecrans, eis.and you have consecrated and delivered my sons to them.

Et post omnes abominationes tuas et fornicationes,And after all your abominations and fornications, non es recordata dierum adolescentiæ tuæ,you have not remembered the days of your youth, quando eras nuda et confusione plena, when you were naked and full of shame, conculcata in sanguine tuo.wallowing in your own blood.

Et accidit post omnem malitiam tuam (væ,And it happened that, after all your wickedness, (woe,væ tibi!woe to you,ait Dominus Deus),says the Lord God)

et ædificasti tibi lupanar, you built for yourself a brothel,et fecisti tibi prostibulum in cunctis plateis.and you made for yourself a place of prostitution in every street.

Ad omne caput viæ ædificasti signum prostitutionis tuæ,At the head of every way, you set up a banner of your prostitution.et abominabilem fecisti decorem tuum:And you caused your beauty to become abominable.et divisisti pedes tuos omni transeunti,And you distributed your feet to every passer-by.et multiplicasti fornicationes tuas:And you multiplied your fornications.

et fornicata es cum filiis Ægypti,And you fornicated with the sons of Egypt, vicinis tuis, your neighbors, magnarum carnium:who have large bodies.et multiplicasti fornicationem tuam ad irritandum me.And you multiplied your fornications, so as to provoke me.

Ecce ego extendam manum meam super te,Behold, I will extend my hand over you,et auferam justificationem tuam, and I will take away your justification.et dabo te in animas odientium te filiarum Palæstinarum,And I will give you to the souls of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines,quæ erubescunt in via tua scelerata.who are ashamed of your wicked way.

Et fornicata es in filiis Assyriorum eo quod necdum fueris expleta:You also fornicated with the sons of the Assyrians, for you were not yet done.et postquam fornicata es,And after you fornicated, even then, nec sic es satiata:you were not satisfied.

et multiplicasti fornicationem tuam in terra Chanaan cum Chaldæis,And you multiplied your fornications in the land of Canaan with the Chaldeans. And even then,et nec sic satiata es.you were not satisfied.

In quo mundabo cor tuum,With what can I cleanse your heart, ait Dominus Deus, says the Lord God,cum facias omnia hæc opera mulieris meretricissince you do all these things,et procacis?the works of a woman who is a shameless prostitute?

Quia fabricasti lupanar tuum in capite omnis viæ,For you have built your brothel at the head of every way,et excelsum tuum fecisti in omni platea:and you have made your exalted place on every street.nec facta es quasi meretrix fastidio augens pretium,And you have not even been like a choosy prostitute, increasing her price,

sed quasi mulier adultera, but instead like a woman who is an adulteress,quæ super virum suum inducit alienos.who prefers strangers to her own husband.

Omnibus meretricibus dantur mercedes:Wages are given to all prostitutes.tu autem dedisti mercedes cunctis amatoribus tuis,But you have given wages to all your lovers, and you have given gifts to them,et dona donabas eis, ut intrarent ad te undique ad fornicandum tecum.so that they would enter to you from every side, in order to fornicate with you.

Factumque est in te contra consuetudinem mulierum in fornicationibus tuis,And it is done with you, in your fornications, contrary to the custom of women,et post te non erit fornicatio:and even after you, there will be no such fornication.in eo enim quod dedisti mercedes,For in as much as you have given payment,et mercedes non accepisti, factum est in te contrarium.and not taken payment, what has been done in you is the contrary.”

Propterea,Because of this, meretrix,O harlot, audi verbum Domini.listen to the word of the Lord.

Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God:Quia effusum est æs tuum et revelata est ignominia tua in fornicationibus tuis super amatores tuos,“Because your money has been poured out, and your disgrace has been uncovered,et super idola abominationum tuarum,in your fornications with your lovers and with the idols of your abominations,in sanguine filiorum tuorum quos dedisti eis,in the blood of your sons, whom you gave to them:

ecce ego congregabo omnes amatores tuos quibus commista es,Behold, I will gather all your lovers, with whom you have united,et omnes quos dilexisti, and all those whom you have loved, cum universis quos oderas:together with all those whom you have hated.et congregabo eos super te undique,And I will gather them together against you on every side.et nudabo ignominiam tuam coram eis,And I will uncover your disgrace before them,et videbunt omnem turpitudinem tuam.and they will see all your indecency.

Et judicabo te judiciis adulterarum,And I will judge you with the judgment of adulteresses and of those who shed blood.et effundentium sanguinem:And I will give you over to blood,et dabo te in sanguinem furoris et zeli.in fury and in zeal.

Et dabo te in manus eorum,And I will deliver you into their hands.et destruent lupanar tuum, et demolientur prostibulum tuum:And they will destroy your brothel and demolish your place of prostitution.et denudabunt te vestimentis tuis,And they will strip you of your vestments.et auferent vasa decoris tui,And they will take away the ornaments of your beauty.et derelinquent te nudam,And they will leave you behind, plenamque ignominia:naked and full of disgrace.

et adducent super te multitudinem,And they will lead over you a multitude.et lapidabunt te lapidibus,And they will stone you with stones,et trucidabunt te gladiis suis:and massacre you with their swords.

et comburent domos tuas igni,And they will burn up your houses with fire,et facient in te judicia in oculis mulierum plurimarum.and they will carry out judgments against you in the sight of many women.Et desines fornicari,And you will cease from fornication,et mercedes ultra non dabis:and no longer give payment.

et requiescet indignatio mea in te,And my indignation will be quieted in you.et auferetur zelus meus a te:And my zeal will be taken from you.et quiescam,And I will rest, nec irascar amplius.and no longer be angry.

Eo quod non fueris recordata dierum adolescentiæ tuæ,For you have not remembered the days of your youth,et provocasti me in omnibus his,and you have provoked me in all these things.quapropterBecause of this,et ego vias tuas in capite tuo dedi,I also have delivered all your ways upon your head, ait Dominus Deus, says the Lord God,et non feci juxta scelera tua in omnibus abominationibus tuis.but I have not acted in accord with your wickedness in all your abominations.

Ecce omnis qui dicit vulgo proverbium,Behold,in te assumet illud, all who speak a common proverb will take this up against you, dicens:saying:Sicut mater,‘Like the mother, ita et filia ejus.so also is her daughter.’

Filia matris tuæ es tu,You are your mother’s daughter,quæ projecit virum suum et filios suos:for she cast away her husband and her children.et soror sororum tuarum es tu,And you are the sister of your sisters,quæ projecerunt viros suos et filios suos:for they cast away their husbands and their children.mater vestra Cethæa,Your mother was a Cethite,et pater vester Amorrhæus.and your father was an Amorite.

Et soror tua major, Samaria,And your older sister is Samaria, ipsa et filiæ ejus, quæ habitant ad sinistram tuam:she and her daughters are those who live to your left.soror autem tua minor te,But your younger sister,quæ habitat a dextris tuis, who lives to your right,Sodoma, et filiæ ejus.is Sodom and her daughters.

Sed nec in viis earum ambulasti,But neither have you walked in their ways.neque secundum scelera earum fecisti pauxillum minus:For you have done only a little less compared to their wickedness.pene sceleratiora fecisti illis in omnibus viis tuis. You have acted almost more wickedly, in all your ways, than they have acted.

Vivo ego,As I live, dicit Dominus Deus, says the Lord God,quia non fecit Sodoma soror tua, your sister Sodom herself, ipsa et filiæ ejus, and her daughters, sicut fecisti tu et filiæ tuæ.have not done as you and your daughters have done.

Ecce hæc fuit iniquitas Sodomæ sororis tuæ:Behold, this was the iniquity of Sodom, your sister:superbia, arrogance, saturitas panis et abundantia, indulgence in bread and abundance,et otium ipsius et filiarum ejus:and the idleness of her and her daughters;et manum egeno et pauperi non porrigebant:and they did not reach out their hand to the needy and the poor.

et elevatæ sunt,And they were exalted,et fecerunt abominationes coram me:and they committed abominations before me.et abstuli eas sicut vidisti. And so I took them away, just as you have seen.

Et Samaria dimidium peccatorum tuorum non peccavit:But Samaria has not committed even half of your sins.sed vicisti eas sceleribus tuis,For you have exceeded them in your wickedness,et justificasti sorores tuas in omnibus abominationibus tuis quas operata es.and you have justified your sisters by all your abominations, which you have wrought.

ErgoTherefore,et tu porta confusionem tuam, you also bear your shame,quæ vicisti sorores tuas peccatis tuis, for you have exceeded your sisters with your sins, sceleratius agens ab eis:acting more wickedly than they did.justificatæ sunt enim a te:So they have been justified above you.ergoBy this also,et tu confundere, you are confounded,et porta ignominiam tuam, and you bear your disgrace,quæ justificasti sorores tuas.for you have justified your sisters.

Et convertam restituens eas conversione Sodomorum cum filiabus suis,But I will convert and restore them,et conversione Samariæby converting Sodom with her daughters,et filiarum ejus, and by converting Samaria and her daughters.et convertam reversionem tuam in medio earum,And I will convert your return in their midst.

ut portes ignominiam tuam,So may you bear your disgrace and be confounded over all that you have done,et confundaris in omnibus quæ fecisti consolans eas.consoling them.

Et soror tua Sodoma et filiæ ejus revertentur ad antiquitatem suam,And your sister Sodom and her daughters will return to their ancient state.et Samaria et filiæ ejus revertentur ad antiquitatem suam,And Samaria and her daughters will return to their ancient state.et tu et filiæ tuæ revertemini ad antiquitatem vestram. And you and your daughters will be returned to your ancient state.

Non fuit autem Sodoma soror tua audita in ore tuo in die superbiæ tuæ,Your sister Sodom was not heard from your mouth, then, in the day of your pride,

antequam revelaretur malitia tua, sicut hoc tempore in opprobrium filiarum Syriæ, et cunctarum in circuitu tuo filiarum Palæstinarum quæ ambiunt te per gyrum.before your malice was revealed, as it is at this time, with the reproach of the daughters of Syria and of all the daughters of Palestine, who surround you, who encircle you on every side.

Scelus tuum et ignominiam tuam tu portasti,You have borne your wickedness and your disgrace, ait Dominus Deus.says the Lord God.”

Quia hæc dicit Dominus Deus:For thus says the Lord God:Et faciam tibi sicut despexisti juramentum,“I will act toward you, just as you have despised the oath,ut irritum faceres pactum:so that you would make void the covenant.

et recordabor ego pacti mei tecum in diebus adolescentiæ tuæ,And I will remember my covenant with you in the days of your youth.et suscitabo tibi pactum sempiternum. And I will raise up for you an everlasting covenant.

Et recordaberis viarum tuarum,And you shall remember your ways and be confounded,et confunderis, when you will have received your sisters, cum receperis sorores tuas te majores cum minoribus tuis:your elder with your younger.et dabo eas tibi in filias,And I will give them to you as daughters, sed non ex pacto tuo.but not by your covenant.

Et suscitabo ego pactum meum tecum,And I will raise up my covenant with you.et scies quia ego Dominus:And you shall know that I am the Lord.

ut recorderis,So may you remember and be confounded.et confundaris,And it will no longer be for you to open your mouth,et non sit tibi ultra aperire os præ confusione tua, because of your shame, cum placatus tibi fuero in omnibus quæ fecisti, when I will have been pacified toward you over all that you have done, ait Dominus Deus.says the Lord God.”
