Et dixit ad me:And he said to me:Fili hominis,“Son of man, quodcumque inveneris, comede:eat whatever you will find;comede volumen istud, eat this scroll, and,et vadens loquere ad filios Israël.going forth, speak to the sons of Israel.”
Et aperui os meum,And I opened my mouth,et cibavit me volumine illo:and he fed me that scroll.
et dixit ad me:And he said to me:Fili hominis,“Son of man, venter tuus comedet, your stomach shall eat,et viscera tua complebuntur volumine isto quod ego do tibi.and your interior shall be filled with this scroll, which I am giving to you.”Et comedi illud,And I ate it,et factum est in ore meo sicut mel dulce.and in my mouth it became as sweet as honey.
Et dixit ad me:And he said to me:Fili hominis,“Son of man, vade ad domum Israël,go to the house of Israel,et loqueris verba mea ad eos.and you shall speak my words to them.
Non enim ad populum profundi sermonis et ignotæ linguæ tu mitteris ad domum Israël:For you will be sent, not to a people of profound words or of an unknown language, but to the house of Israel,
neque ad populos multos profundi sermonis et ignotæ linguæ,and not to many peoples of profound words or of an unknown language, quorum non possis audire sermones:whose words you would not be able to understand.et si ad illos mittereris,But if you were sent to them, ipsi audirent te:they would listen to you.
domus autem Israël nolunt audire te,Yet the house of Israel is not willing to listen to you.quia nolunt audire me:For they are not willing to listen to me.omnis quippe domus Israël attrita fronte est,Certainly,et duro corde.the entire house of Israel has a brazen forehead and a hardened heart.
Ecce dedi faciem tuam valentiorem faciebus eorum,Behold, I have made your face stronger than their faces,et frontem tuam duriorem frontibus eorum:and your forehead harder than their foreheads.
ut adamantem et ut silicem dedi faciem tuam:I have made your face like hardened iron and like flint.ne timeas eos,You should not fear them, neque metuas a facie eorum, and you should not have dread before their face.quia domus exasperans est.For they are a provoking house.”
Et dixit ad me:And he said to me:Fili hominis,“Son of man, omnes sermones meos quos ego loquor ad te,listen with your ears, and take into your heart, assume in corde tuo, et auribus tuis audi:all my words, which I am speaking to you.
et vade, ingredere ad transmigrationem,And go forth and enter to those of the transmigration,ad filios populi tui,to the sons of your people.et loqueris ad eos:And you shall speak to them.et dices eis: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:And you shall say to them: ‘Thus says the Lord God.’si forte audiant et quiescant.Perhaps it may be that they will listen and be quieted.”
Et assumpsit me spiritus,And the Spirit took me up,et audivi post me vocem commotionis magnæ:and I heard behind me the voice of a great commotion, saying,Benedicta gloria Domini de loco suo:“Blessed is the glory of the Lord from his place,”
et vocem alarum animalium percutientium alteram ad alteram, and the voice of the wings of the living creatures striking against one another,et vocem rotarum sequentium animalia, and the voice of the wheels following the living creatures,et vocem commotionis magnæ.and the voice of a great commotion.
Spiritus quoque levavit me,Then the Spirit lifted me and took me away.et assumpsit me:And I went forth in bitterness,et abii amarus in indignatione spiritus mei:with the indignation of my spirit.manus enim Domini erat mecum,For the hand of the Lord was with me,confortans me.strengthening me.
Et veni ad transmigrationem,And I went to those of the transmigration,ad acervum novarum frugum,to the stockpile of new crops,ad eos qui habitabant juxta flumen Chobar:to those who were living beside the river Chebar.et sedi ubi illi sedebant,And I sat where they were sitting.et mansi ibi septem diebus mœrens in medio eorum. And I remained there for seven days, while mourning in their midst.
Cum autem pertransissent septem dies,Then, when seven days had passed, factum est verbum Domini ad me,the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:
Fili hominis,“Son of man, speculatorem dedi te domui Israël,I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. And so,et audies de ore meo verbum, you shall listen to the word from my mouth,et annuntiabis eis ex me.and you shall announce it to them from me.
Si,If,dicente me ad impium:when I say to the impious man,Morte morieris,‘You shall certainly die,’non annuntiaveris ei,you do not announce it to him, neque locutus fueris ut avertatur a via sua impia et vivat, and you do not speak so that he may turn aside from his impious way and live, ipse impius in iniquitate sua morietur, then the same impious man will die in his iniquity.sanguinem autem ejus de manu tua requiram. But I will attribute his blood to your hand.
Si autem tu annuntiaveris impio,But if you announce it to the impious man,et ille non fuerit conversus ab impietate sua et a via sua impia, and he is not converted from his impiety and from his impious way, ipse quidem in iniquitate sua morietur:then indeed he will die in his iniquity.tu autem animam tuam liberasti. But you will have delivered your own soul.
Sed et si conversus justus a justitia sua fuerit, et fecerit iniquitatem,Moreover, if the just man turns aside from his justice and commits iniquity, ponam offendiculum coram eo:I will place a stumbling block before him.ipse morietur quia non annuntiasti ei.He shall die, because you have not announced to him.In peccato suo morietur,He shall die in his sin,et non erunt in memoria justitiæ ejus quas fecit:and his justices that he did shall not be remembered.sanguinem vero ejus de manu tua requiram.Yet truly, I will attribute his blood to your hand.
Si autem tu annuntiaveris justo ut non peccet justus,But if you announce to the just man, so that the just man may not sin,et ille non peccaverit, vivens vivet, and he does not sin, then he shall certainly live, quia annuntiasti ei,because you have announced to him.et tu animam tuam liberasti. And you will have delivered your own soul.”
Et facta est super me manus Domini,And the hand of the Lord was over me.et dixit ad me:And he said to me:Surgens egredere in campum,“Rise up, and go out to the plain,et ibi loquar tecum.and there I will speak with you.”
Et surgens egressus sum in campum:And I rose up, and I went out to the plain.et ecce ibi gloria Domini stabat,And behold, the glory of the Lord was standing there, quasi gloria quam vidi juxta fluvium Chobar:like the glory that I saw beside the river Chebar.et cecidi in faciem meam. And I fell upon my face.
Et ingressus est in me spiritus,And the Spirit entered into me,et statuit me super pedes meos, and set me upon my feet.et locutus est mihi,And he spoke to me,et dixit ad me:and he said to me:Ingredere,“Enteret includere in medio domus tuæ.and enclose yourself in the midst of your house.
Et tu,And as for you, fili hominis, son of man, ecce data sunt super te vincula, behold:et ligabunt te in eis, they shall put chains upon you and bind you with them.et non egredieris de medio eorum. And you shall not go out from their midst.
Et linguam tuam adhærere faciam palato tuo,And I will cause your tongue to adhere to the roof of your mouth.et eris mutus,And you will be mute, nec quasi vir objurgans, not like a man who reproaches.quia domus exasperans est.For they are a provoking house.
Cum autem locutus fuero tibi,But when I will speak to you, aperiam os tuum,I will open your mouth,et dices ad eos:and you shall say to them:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:‘Thus says the Lord God.’Qui audit,Whoever is listening, audiat, let him hear.et qui quiescit,And whoever is quieted, quiescat:let him be quieted.quia domus exasperans est.For they are a provoking house.”
