Visitavit autem Dominus Saram,Then the Lord visited Sarah, sicut promiserat:just as he had promised;et implevit quæ locutus est.and he fulfilled what he had spoken.
Concepitque et peperit filium in senectute sua,And she conceived and gave birth to a son in her old age, tempore quo prædixerat ei Deus.at the time that God had foretold to her.
Vocavitque Abraham nomen filii sui,And Abraham called the name of his son, quem genuit ei Sara, whom Sarah bore for him,Isaac:Isaac.
et circumcidit eum octavo die,And he circumcised him on the eighth day, sicut præceperat ei Deus, just as God had instructed him,
cum centum esset annorum:when he was one hundred years old. Indeed, hac quippe ætate patris,at this stage of his father’s life, natus est Isaac.Isaac was born.
Dixitque Sara:And Sarah said:Risum fecit mihi Deus:“God has brought laughter to me.quicumque audierit, corridebit mihi.Whoever will hear of it will laugh with me.”
Rursumque ait:And again, she said:Quis auditurus crederet Abraham quod Sara lactaret filium,“Hearing this, who would believe Abraham, that Sarah breast-fed a son, quem peperit ei jam seni?to whom she gave birth, despite being elderly?”
Crevit igitur puer,And the boy grewet ablactatus est:and was weaned.fecitque Abraham grande convivium in die ablactationis ejus. And Abraham made a great feast on the day of his weaning.
Cumque vidisset Sara filium Agar Ægyptiæ ludentem cum Isaac filio suo,And when Sarah had seen the son of Hagar the Egyptian playing with her son Isaac, dixit ad Abraham:she said to Abraham:
Ejice ancillam hanc,“Cast out this woman servantet filium ejus:and her son.non enim erit hæres filius ancillæ cum filio meo Isaac. For the son of a woman servant will not be heir with my son Isaac.”
Dure accepit hoc Abraham pro filio suo.Abraham took this grievously, for the sake of his son.
Cui dixit Deus:And God said to him:Non tibi videatur asperum super puero,“Let it not seem harsh to you concerning the boyet super ancilla tua:and your woman servant.omnia quæ dixerit tibi Sara,In all that Sarah has said to you, audi vocem ejus:listen to her voice.quia in Isaac vocabitur tibi semen. For your offspring will be invoked in Isaac.
Sed et filium ancillæ faciam in gentem magnam,Yet I will also make the son of the woman servant into a great nation, quia semen tuum est.for he is your offspring.”
Surrexit itaque Abraham mane,And so Abraham arose in the morning,et tollens panem et utrem aquæ,and taking bread and a skin of water, imposuit scapulæ ejus,he placed it upon her shoulder, tradiditque puerum, and he handed over the boy,et dimisit eam.and he released her.Quæ cum abiisset,And when she had departed, errabat in solitudine Bersabee.she wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
Cumque consumpta esset aqua in utre,And when the water in the skin had been consumed, abjecit puerum subter unam arborum, she set aside the boy,quæ ibi erant.under one of the trees that were there.
Et abiit,And she moved away and sat in a distant area, seditque e regione procul quantum potest arcus jacere:as far as a bow can reach.dixit enim:For she said,Non videbo morientem puerum:“I shall not see the boy die.”et sedens contra,And so,levavit vocem suamsitting opposite her,et flevit.he lifted up his voice and wept.
Exaudivit autem Deus vocem pueri:But God heard the voice of the boy.vocavitque angelus Dei Agar de cælo,And an Angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, dicens:saying:Quid agis Agar?“What are you doing, Hagar?noli timere:Do not be afraid.exaudivit enim Deus vocem pueri de loco in quo est.For God has heeded the voice of the boy, from the place where he is.
Surge,Rise up.tolle puerum,Take the boyet tene manum illius:and hold him by the hand.quia in gentem magnam faciam eum.For I will make of him a great nation.”
Aperuitque oculos ejus Deus:And God opened her eyes.quæ videns puteum aquæ,And seeing a well of water, abiit, she wentet implevit utrem, and filled the skin, deditque puero bibere.and she gave the boy to drink.
Et fuit cum eo:And God was with him.qui crevit,And he grew,et moratus est in solitudine, and he stayed in the wilderness, factusque est juvenis sagittarius.and he became a young man, an archer.
Habitavitque in deserto Pharan,And he lived in the desert of Paran,et accepit illi mater sua uxorem de terra Ægypti.and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
Eodem tempore dixit Abimelech,At the same time, Abimelech and Phicol,et Phicol princeps exercitus ejus, the leader of his army, said to Abraham:ad Abraham: Deus tecum est in universis quæ agis.“God is with you in everything that you do.
Jura ergo per Deum,Therefore,ne noceas mihi, swear by God that you will do no harm to me,et posteris meis, and to my posterity, stirpique meæ:and to my stock.sed juxta misericordiam,But according to the mercy that I have done to you, quam feci tibi, you will do to mefacies mihi, and to the land,et terræ in qua versatus es advena.to which you have turned as a newcomer.”
Dixitque Abraham:And Abraham said,Ego jurabo.“I will swear.”
Et increpavit Abimelech propter puteum aquæ quem vi abstulerunt servi ejus. And he reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, which his servants had taken away by force.
Responditque Abimelech:And Abimelech responded,Nescivi quis fecerit hanc rem:“I do not know who did this thing, sedbut you also did not reveal it to me,et tu non indicasti mihi, nor have I heard of it,et ego non audivi præter hodie.before today.”
Tulit itaque Abraham oves et boves,And so Abraham took sheep and oxen,et dedit Abimelech:and he gave them to Abimelech.percusseruntque ambo fœdus. And both of them struck a pact.
Et statuit Abraham septem agnas gregis seorsum. And Abraham set aside seven female lambs from the flock.
Cui dixit Abimelech:Abimelech said to him,Quid sibi volunt septem agnæ istæ,“What purpose have these seven female lambs, quas stare fecisti seorsum?which you have caused to stand separately?”
At ille:But he said,Septem, inquit, agnas accipies de manu mea:“You will receive seven female lambs from my hand,ut sint mihi in testimonium, quoniam ego fodi puteum istum.so that they may be a testimony for me, that I dug this well.”
Idcirco vocatus est locus ille Bersabee:For this reason, that place was called Beersheba, quia ibi uterque juravit.because there both of them did swear.
Et inierunt fœdus pro puteo juramenti. And they initiated a pact on behalf of the well of oath.
Surrexit autem Abimelech,Then Abimelech and Phicol,et Phicol princeps exercitus ejus, the leader of his army, rose up,reversique sunt in terram Palæstinorum.and they returned to the land of the Palestinians.Abraham vero plantavit nemus in Bersabee,In truth, Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba,et invocavit ibi nomen Domini Dei æterni.and there he called upon the name of the Lord God Eternal.
Et fuit colonus terræ Palæstinorum diebus multis. And he was a settler in the land of the Palestinians for many days.
