Væ qui condunt leges iniquas,Woe to those who make unfair laws,et scribentes injustitiam scripserunt, and who, when writing, write injustice:
ut opprimerent in judicio pauperes,in order to oppress the poor in judgment,et vim facerent causæ humilium populi mei;and to do violence to the case of the humble of my people,ut essent viduæ præda eorum,in order that widows may be their prey,et pupillos diriperent.and that they might plunder the orphan.
Quid facietis in die visitationis,What will you do on the day of visitationet calamitatis de longe venientis?and calamity which is approaching from afar?ad cujus confugietis auxilium? To whom will you flee for assistance?et ubi derelinquetis gloriam vestram,And where will you leave behind your own glory,
ne incurvemini sub vinculo, et cum interfectis cadatis?so that you may not be bowed down under the chains, and fall with the slain?Super omnibus his non est aversus furor ejus,Concerning all this, his fury was not turned away;sed adhuc manus ejus extenta.instead, his hand was still extended.
Væ Assur!Woe to Assur!virga furoris mei et baculus ipse est;He is the rod and the staff of my fury,in manu eorum indignatio mea.and my indignation is in their hands.
Ad gentem fallacem mittam eum,I will send him to a deceitful nation,et contra populum furoris mei mandabo illi, and I will order him against the people of my fury,ut auferat spolia,so that he may take away the plunder,et diripiat prædam, and tear apart the prey,et ponat illum in conculcationem quasi lutum platearum.and place it to be trampled like the mud of the streets.
Ipse autem non sic arbitrabitur,But he will not consider it to be so,et cor ejus non ita existimabit;and his heart will not suppose it to be this way.sed ad conterendum erit cor ejus,Instead,et ad internecionem gentium non paucarum.his heart will be set to crush and to exterminate more than a few nations.
Dicet enim:For he will say:
Numquid non principes mei simul reges sunt?“Are not my princes like many kings?numquid non ut Charcamis, sic Calano? Is not Calno like Carchemish,et ut Arphad, sic Emath?and Hamath like Arpad?numquid non ut Damascus, sic Samaria? Is not Samaria like Damascus?
Quomodo invenit manus mea regna idoli,In the same manner as my hand reached the kingdoms of the idol, sic et simulacra eorum de Jerusalem et de Samaria.so also will it reach their false images, those of Jerusalem and of Samaria.
Numquid non sicut feci Samariæ et idolis ejus,Should I not do to Jerusalem and her false images, sic faciam Jerusalem et simulacris ejus?just as I have done to Samaria and her idols?”
Et erit,And this shall be:cum impleverit Dominus cuncta opera sua in monte Sion et in Jerusalem, when the Lord will have completed each of his works on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, visitabo super fructum magnifici cordis regis Assur,I will act against the fruit of the exalted heart of king Assur,et super gloriam altitudinis oculorum ejus.and against the glory of the haughtiness of his eyes.
Dixit enim:For he has said:In fortitudine manus meæ feci,“I have acted with the strength of my own hand,et in sapientia mea intellexi;and I have understood with my own wisdom,et abstuli terminos populorum, and I have removed the limits of the people,et principes eorum deprædatus sum,and I have plundered their leaders, and,et detraxi quasi potens in sublimi residentes.like one with power, I have pulled down those residing on high.
Et invenit quasi nidum manus mea fortitudinem populorum; And my hand has reached to the strength of the people, as to a nest. And,et sicut colliguntur ova quæ derelicta sunt, just as the eggs which have been left behind are gathered, sic universam terram ego congregavi;so have I gathered the entire earth.et non fuit qui moveret pennam,And there was no one who moved a wing,et aperiret os,or opened a mouth,et ganniret.or uttered a snarl.”
Numquid gloriabitur securis contra eum qui secat in ea?Should the axe glorify itself over him who wields it?aut exaltabitur serra contra eum a quo trahitur?Or can the saw exalt itself over him who pulls it?Quomodo si elevetur virga contra elevantem se,How can a rod lift itself up against him who wields it,et exaltetur baculus,or a staff exalt itself, qui utique lignum est.though it is only wood?
Propter hoc mittet Dominator,Because of this, the sovereign Lord,Dominus exercituum, the Lord of hosts,in pinguibus ejus tenuitatem;will send leanness among his fat ones.et subtus gloriam ejus succensa ardebit quasi combustio ignis. And under the influence of his glory, a burning ardor will rage, like a consuming fire.
Et erit lumen Israël in igne,And the light of Israel will be like a fire,et Sanctus ejus in flamma;and the Holy One of Israel will be like a flame.et succendetur,And his thorns and briers will be set ablaze and devoured,et devorabitur spina ejus et vepres in die una.in one day.
Et gloria saltus ejus,And the glory of his forestet carmeli ejus, and of his beautiful hill will be consumed,ab anima usque ad carnem consumetur;from the soul even to the flesh.et erit terrore profugus. And he will flee away in terror.
Et reliquiæ ligni saltus ejus præ paucitate numerabuntur,And what remains of the trees of his forest will be so few, and so easily numbered,et puer scribet eos.that even a child could write them down.
Et erit in die illa:And this shall be in that day:non adjiciet residuum Israël,those not added to the remnant of Israel,et hi qui fugerint de domo Jacob, and those who escape of the house of Jacob, inniti super eo qui percutit eos;will not lean upon him who strikes them.sed innitetur super Dominum,Instead, they will lean upon the Lord,Sanctum Israël, in veritate.the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
Reliquiæ convertentur; reliquiæ,The remnant of Jacob, again I say the remnant, inquam, Jacob ad Deum fortem.will be converted to the mighty God.
Si enim fuerit populus tuus,For though your people, O Israel,Israël, quasi arena maris, will be like the sand of the sea, reliquiæ convertentur ex eo;yet only a remnant of them will be converted.consummatio abbreviata inundabit justitiam. The consummation, having been shortened, will be inundated with justice.
Consummationem enim et abbreviationem Dominus Deus exercituum faciet in medio omnis terræ.For the Lord, the God of hosts, will accomplish an abbreviation and a consummation, in the midst of all the earth.
Propter hoc,For this reason,hæc dicit Dominus Deus exercituum:the Lord, the God of hosts, says this:Noli timere,“My people, populus meus, who inhabit Zion:habitator Sion, ab Assur:do not be afraid of Assur.in virga percutiet te,He will strike you with his rod,et baculum suum levabit super te,and he will lift up his staff over you,in via Ægypti.on the way of Egypt.
Adhuc enim paululum modicumque,But after a little while and a brief time,et consummabitur indignatiomy indignation will be consumed,et furor meus super scelus eorum.and my fury will turn to their wickedness.”
Et suscitabit super eum Dominus exercituum flagellum,And the Lord of hosts will raise up a scourge over him, juxta plagam Madian in petra Oreb:like the scourge of Midian at the rock of Oreb,et virgam suam super mare, and he will raise up his rod over the sea,et levabit eam in via Ægypti.and he will lift it up against the way of Egypt.
Et erit in die illa:And this shall be in that day:auferetur onus ejus de humero tuohis burden will be taken away from your shoulder,et jugum ejus de collo tuo,and his yoke will be taken away from your neck,et computrescet jugum a facie olei.and the yoke will decay at the appearance of the oil.
Veniet in Ajath,He will approach Aiath;transibit in Magron,he will cross into Migron;apud Machmas commendabit vasa sua.he will entrust his vessels to Michmash.
Transierunt cursim,They have passed through in haste;Gaba sedes nostra;Geba is our seat;obstupuit Rama,Ramah was stupefied;Gabaath Saulis fugit.Gibeah of Saul fled.
Hinni voce tua,Neigh with your voice,filia Gallim,daughter of Gallim;attende Laisa,pay attention, Laishah,paupercula Anathoth.impoverished woman of Anathoth.
Migravit Medemena;Madmenah has moved away;habitatores Gabim,be strengthened, confortamini.you inhabitants of Gebim.
Adhuc dies est ut in Nobe stetur; It is still daylight, so stand at Nob.agitabit manum suam super montem filiæ Sion,He will shake his hand against the mountain of the daughter of Zion, collem Jerusalem.the hill of Jerusalem.
Ecce Dominator,Behold,Dominus exercituum, confringet lagunculam in terrore;the sovereign Lord of hosts will crush the little bottle of wine with terror,et excelsi statura succidentur, and the exalted in stature will be cut down,et sublimes humiliabuntur.and the lofty will be brought low.
Et subvertentur condensa saltus ferro; And the dense forest will be overturned with iron.et Libanus cum excelsis cadet. And Lebanon, with its exalted ones, will fall.
