1Primo tempore alleviata est terra Zabulon et terra Nephthali: et novissimo aggravata est via maris trans Jordanem Galilææ gentium.In the earlier time, the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali were lifted up. But in the later time, the way of the sea beyond the Jordan, the Galilee of the Gentiles, was weighed down.
2Populus qui ambulabat in tenebris, vidit lucem magnam;The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.habitantibus in regione umbræ mortis, lux orta est eis.A light has risen for the inhabitants of the region of the shadow of death.
3Multiplicasti gentem,You have increased the nation,et non magnificasti lætitiam.but you have not increased the rejoicing.Lætabuntur coram te,They will rejoice before you,sicut qui lætantur in messe;like those who rejoice at the harvest,sicut exsultant victores capta præda,like the victorious exulting after capturing the prey,quando dividunt spolia.when they divide the spoils.
4Jugum enim oneris ejus,For you have prevailed over the yoke of their burden,et virgam humeri ejus,and over the rod of their shoulder,et sceptrum exactoris ejus superasti,and over the scepter of their oppressor,sicut in die Madian.as in the day of Midian.
5Quia omnis violentia prædatio cum tumultu,For every violent plunder with a tumult,et vestimentum mistum sanguine,and every garment mixed with blood,erit in combustionem,will be burned upet cibus ignis.and will become fuel for the fire.
6Parvulus enim natus est nobis,For unto us a child is born,et filius datus est nobis,and unto us a son is given.et factus est principatus super humerum ejus:And leadership is placed upon his shoulder.et vocabitur nomen ejus,And his name shall be called:Admirabilis, Consiliarius,wonderful Counselor,Deus, Fortis,mighty God,Pater futuri sæculi,father of the future age,Princeps pacis.Prince of Peace.
7Multiplicabitur ejus imperium,His reign will be increased,et pacis non erit finis;and there will be no end to his peace.super solium David,He will sit upon the throne of David and over his kingdom,et super regnum ejus sedebit,to confirm and strengthen it,ut confirmet illud et corroboret in judicio et justitia,in judgment and justice,amodo et usque in sempiternum:from now even unto eternity.zelus Domini exercituum faciet hoc.The zeal of the Lord of hosts shall accomplish this.
8Verbum misit Dominus in Jacob,The Lord sent a word to Jacob,et cecidit in Israël.and it fell upon Israel.
9Et sciet omnis populus Ephraim,And all the people of Ephraim will know it.et habitantes Samariam,And the inhabitants of Samaria will say it,in superbia et magnitudine cordis dicentes:in the arrogance and haughtiness of their heart:
10Lateres ceciderunt,“The bricks have fallen,sed quadris lapidibus ædificabimus;but we will build with squared stones.sycomoros succiderunt,They have cut down the sycamores,sed cedros immutabimus.but we will replace them with cedars.”
11Et elevabit Dominus hostes Rasin super eum,And the Lord will raise up the enemies of Rezin over him,et inimicos ejus in tumultum vertet.and he will turn his adversaries into a tumult:
12Syriam ab oriente, et Philisthiim ab occidente;the Syrians from the east and the Philistines from the west.et devorabunt Israël toto ore.And they will devour Israel with their whole mouth.In omnibus his non est aversus furor ejus,After all this, his fury was not turned away;sed adhuc manus ejus extenta.instead, his hand was still extended.
13Et populus non est reversus ad percutientem se,And the people did not return to the One who struck them,et Dominum exercituum non inquisierunt.and they did not seek the Lord of hosts.
14Et disperdet Dominus ab Israël caput et caudam,And so, the Lord will disperse, away from Israel,incurvantem et refrenantem,the head and the tail, he who bows down and he who refrains,die una.in one day.
15Longævus et honorabilis,The long-lived and honorable,ipse est caput;he is the head;et propheta docens mendacium,and the prophet who teaches lies,ipse est cauda.he is the tail.
16Et erunt qui beatificant populum istum, seducentes;And those who deceitfully praise this people, and those who are praised,et qui beatificantur, præcipitati.will be thrown down violently.
17Propter hoc super adolescentulis ejus non lætabitur Dominus,For this reason, the Lord will not rejoice over their youths.et pupillorum ejus et viduarum non miserebitur:And he will not take pity on their orphans and widows.quia omnis hypocrita est et nequam,For each one is a hypocrite, and each one is wicked,et universum os locutum est stultitiam;and every mouth has spoken foolishness.in omnibus his non est aversus furor ejus,After all this, his fury was not turned away;sed adhuc manus ejus extenta.instead, his hand was still extended.
18Succensa est enim quasi ignis impietas:For impiety has been kindled like a fire:veprem et spinam vorabit,it will devour brier and thorn,et succendetur in densitate saltus,and it will burn in the dense forest,et convolvetur superbia fumi.and it will be interwoven with the ascending smoke.
19In ira Domini exercituum conturbata est terra,The earth has been shaken by the wrath of the Lord of hosts,et erit populus quasi esca ignis;and the people will become like fuel for the fire.vir fratri suo non parcet.A man will not spare his own brother.
20Et declinabit ad dexteram,And he will turn toward the right,et esuriet;and he will be hungry.et comedet ad sinistram,And he will eat toward the left,et non saturabitur;and he will not be satisfied.unusquisque carnem brachii sui vorabit:Each one will eat the flesh of his own arm:Manasses Ephraim,Manasseh Ephraim,et Ephraim Manassen;and Ephraim Manasseh,simul ipsi contra Judam.and together they will be against Judah.
