In die illa cantabitur canticum istud in terra Juda:In that day, this canticle will be sung in the land of Judah.Urbs fortitudinis nostræ Sion;Within it will be set the city of our strength:salvator ponetur in ea murus et antemurale.Zion, a savior, a wall with a bulwark.
Aperite portas,Open the gates,et ingrediatur gens justa, custodiens veritatem.and let the just people who guard the truth enter.
Vetus error abiit:The old error has gone away.servabis pacem; You will serve peace:pacem, peace, quia in te speravimus.for we have hoped in you.
Sperastis in Domino in sæculis æternis; You have trusted in the Lord for all eternity,in Domino Deo forti in perpetuum.in the Lord God almighty forever.
Quia incurvabit habitantes in excelso; For he will bend down those living in the heights.civitatem sublimem humiliabit:He will bring low the lofty city.humiliabit eam usque ad terram,He will lower it, even to the ground.detrahet eam usque ad pulverem. He will tear it down, even to the dust.
Conculcabit eam pes,The foot will tread it down:pedes pauperis, the feet of the poor, gressus egenorum.the steps of the indigent.
Semita justi recta est,The path of the just is upright;rectus callis justi ad ambulandum.the difficult path of the just is right to walk in.
Et in semita judiciorum tuorum,And in the path of your judgments,Domine,O Lord, sustinuimus te:we have endured for you.nomen tuum et memoriale tuum in desiderio animæ.Your name and your remembrance are the desire of the soul.
Anima mea desideravit te in nocte,My soul has desired you in the night.sed et spiritu meo in præcordiis meis de mane vigilabo ad te.But I will also watch for you with my spirit, in my inmost heart, from the morning.Cum feceris judicia tua in terra,When you accomplish your judgments upon the earth, justitiam discent habitatores orbis.the inhabitants of the world will learn justice.
Misereamur impio, et non discet justitiam;Let us take pity on the impious one, but he will not learn justice.in terra sanctorum iniqua gessit,In the land of the holy ones, he has done iniquity,et non videbit gloriam Domini.and so he will not see the glory of the Lord.
Domine,Lord, exaltetur manus tua,let your hand be exalted,et non videant;and let them not see it.videant,May the envious people seeet confundantur zelantes populi;and be confounded.et ignis hostes tuos devoret. And may fire devour your enemies.
Domine,Lord, dabis pacem nobis:you will give us peace.omnia enim opera nostra operatus es nobis. For all our works have been wrought for us by you.
Domine Deus noster,O Lord our God,possederunt nos domini absque te;other lords have possessed us apart from you, tantum in te recordemur nominis tui.but in you alone let us remember your name.
Morientes non vivant,Let not the dead live;gigantes non resurgant:let not the giants rise up again.propterea visitastiFor this reason,et contrivisti eos,you have visited and destroyed them,et perdidisti omnem memoriam eorum.and you have perished all remembrance of them.
Indulsisti genti,You have been lenient to the people,Domine,O Lord, indulsisti genti, lenient to the people.numquid glorificatus es?But have you been glorified?elongasti omnes terminos terræ.You have removed all the limits of the earth.
Domine, in angustia requisierunt te,Lord, they have sought you in anguish.in tribulatione murmuris doctrina tua eis.Your doctrine was with them, amid the tribulation of murmuring.
Sicut quæ concipit, cum appropinquaverit ad partum,Like a woman who has conceived and is approaching the time for delivery, dolens clamat in doloribus suis, who, in anguish, cries out in her pains, sic facti sumus a facie tua,so have we become before your face,Domine.O Lord.
Concepimus,We have conceived,et quasi parturivimus, and it is as if we were in labor,et peperimus spiritum.but we have given birth to wind.Salutes non fecimus in terra; We have not brought forth salvation on the earth.ideo non ceciderunt habitatores terræ.For this reason, the inhabitants of the earth have not fallen.
Vivent mortui tui,Your dead shall live.interfecti mei resurgent. My slain will rise again. Be awakened,Expergiscimini, et laudate, and give praise, you who live in the dust!qui habitatis in pulvere,For your dew is the dew of the light, quia ros lucis ros tuus, et terram gigantum detrahes in ruinam.and you shall be dragged down to the land of the giants, to ruination.
Vade,Go,populus meus,my people!intra in cubicula tua;Enter your chambers.claude ostia tua super te,Close your doors behind you.abscondere modicum ad momentum,Conceal yourselves for a very brief time, donec pertranseat indignatio.until the indignation has passed over you.
Ecce enim Dominus egredietur de loco suo,For behold, the Lord will go forth from his place,ut visitet iniquitatem habitatoris terræ contra eum;so that he may visit the iniquity of each inhabitant of the earth against him.et revelabit terra sanguinem suum,And the earth will reveal its blood,et non operiet ultra interfectos suos.and it will no longer cover its slain.
