Audite,Pay attention, insulæ,you islands,et attendite, and listen closely, populi de longe:you far away peoples.Dominus ab utero vocavit me;The Lord has called me from the womb;de ventre matris meæ recordatus est nominis mei.from the womb of my mother, he has been mindful of my name.

Et posuit os meum quasi gladium acutum,And he has appointed my mouth as a sharp sword.in umbra manus suæ protexit me,In the shadow of his hand, he has protected me.et posuit me sicut sagittam electam:And he has appointed me as an elect arrow.in pharetra sua abscondit me.In his quiver, he has hidden me.

Et dixit mihi:And he has said to me:Servus meus es tu Israël,“You are my servant, Israel.quia in te gloriabor. For in you, I will glory.”

Et ego dixi:And I said:In vacuum laboravi;“I have labored toward emptiness.sine causaI have consumed my strength without purpose and in vain.et vane fortitudinem meam consumpsi:Therefore, ergo judicium meum cum Domino,my judgment is with the Lord,et opus meum cum Deo meo.and my work is with my God.”

Et nunc dicit Dominus,And now, formans me ex utero servum sibi, says the Lord,ut reducam Jacob ad eum,who formed me from the womb as his servant,et Israël non congregabitur;so that I may bring back Jacob to him,et glorificatus sum in oculis Domini, for Israel will not be gathered together,et Deus meus factus est fortitudo mea.but I have been glorified in the eyes of the Lord and my God has become my strength,

Et dixit:and so he has said:Parum est ut sis mihi servus ad suscitandas tribus Jacob,“It is a small thing that you should be my servant so as to raise up the tribes of Jacob,et fæces Israël convertendas:and so as to convert the dregs of Israel. Behold, ecce dedi te in lucem gentium,I have offered you as a light for the Gentiles,ut sis salus mea usque ad extremum terræ.so that you may be my salvation, even to the furthest regions of the earth.”

Hæc dicit Dominus,Thus says the Lord, redemptor Israël,the Redeemer of Israel,Sanctus ejus, his Holy One,ad contemptibilem animam,to a contemptible soul,ad abominatam gentem,to an abominable nation,ad servum dominorum:to the servant of lords:Reges videbunt,The kings will see,et consurgent principes, and the princes will rise up,et adorabunt propter Dominum, and they will adore, because of the Lord.quia fidelis est,For he is faithful,et Sanctum Israël qui elegit te.and he is the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.

Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord: In a pleasing time,In tempore placito exaudivi te,I have heeded you, and in the day of salvation,et in die salutis auxiliatus sum tui:I have assisted you. And I have preserved you,et servavi te, et dedi te in fœdus populi, and I have presented you as a covenant of the people,ut suscitares terram, et possideres hæreditates dissipatas;so that you would lift up the earth, and possess the scattered inheritances,

ut diceres his qui vincti sunt:so that you would say to those who are bound,Exite,“Go forth!”et his qui in tenebris:and to those who are in darkness,Revelamini.“Be released!”Super vias pascentur,They will pasture along the roads,et in omnibus planis pascua eorum.and their pastures will be in every open place.

Non esurient neque sitient,They will not hunger or thirst,et non percutiet eos æstus et sol,nor will the heat of the sun beat down upon them.quia miserator eorum reget eos,For the one who takes pity on them will rule them,et ad fontes aquarum potabit eos.and he will give them to drink from fountains of waters.

Et ponam omnes montes meos in viam,And I will make all my mountains into a road,et semitæ meæ exaltabuntur.and my paths will be exalted.

Ecce isti de longe venient,Behold, some will come from far away,et ecce illi ab aquilone et mari, and behold, others from the north and from the sea,et isti de terra australi.and still others from the land of the south.

Laudate,Give praise,cæli, et exsulta,O heavens! And exult, terra;O earth!jubilate, montes, laudem,Let the mountains give praise with jubilation!quia consolatus est Dominus populum suum,For the Lord has consoled his people,et pauperum suorum miserebitur.and he will take pity on his poor ones.

Et dixit Sion:And Zion said:Dereliquit me Dominus,“The Lord has abandoned me,et Dominus oblitus est mei.and the Lord has forgotten me.”

Numquid oblivisci potest mulier infantem suum,Can a woman forget her infant,ut non misereatur filio uteri sui?so as not to take pity on the child of her womb?Etsi illa oblita fuerit,But even if she would forget, ego tamen non obliviscar tui.still I shall never forget you.

Ecce in manibus meis descripsi te;Behold, I have engraved you on my hands.muri tui coram oculis meis semper.Your walls are always before my eyes.

Venerunt structores tui;Your builders have arrived.destruentes teThose who would tear you down and destroy you,et dissipantes a te exibunt.they will depart from you.

Leva in circuitu oculos tuos,Lift up your eyes all around,et vide:and see:omnes isti congregati sunt, all these have been gathered together;venerunt tibi.they have come to you.Vivo ego,As I live, dicit Dominus, says the Lord, quia omnibus his velut ornamento vestieris, you shall be clothed with all these things, as if with an ornament.et circumdabis tibi eos quasi sponsa; And like a bride, you shall wrap these things all around you.

quia deserta tua,For your deserts,et solitudines tuæ,and your solitary places,et terra ruinæ tuæ,and the land of your ruination will now be too narrow, nunc angusta erunt præ habitatoribus;because of all the inhabitants.et longe fugabuntur qui absorbebant te.And those who devoured you will be chased far away.

Adhuc dicent in auribus tuis filii sterilitatis tuæ:Even the children of your barrenness will say in your ears:Angustus est mihi locus;“This place is too narrow for me.fac spatium mihi ut habitem.Make me a spacious place in which to dwell.”

Et dices in corde tuo:And you will say in your heart:Quis genuit mihi istos?“Who has conceived them?ego sterilis et non pariens,I was barren and unable to give birth.transmigrata, et captiva;I was taken away and held captive.et istos quis enutrivit? And so, who has raised them?ego destituta et sola;I was destitute and alone. And so,et isti ubi erant?where have they been?”

Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God: Behold,Ecce levabo ad gentes manum meam,I will lift up my hand to the Gentiles,et ad populos exaltabo signum meum:and I will exalt my sign before the peoples.et afferent filios tuos in ulnis,And they will carry your sons in their arms,et filias tuas super humeros portabunt.and they will bear your daughters on their shoulders.

Et erunt reges nutritii tui,And kings will be your caretakers,et reginæ nutrices tuæ;and queens will be your nursemaids.vultu in terram demisso adorabunt te,They will reverence you with their face to the ground,et pulverem pedum tuorum lingent.and they will lick the dust at your feet.Et scies quia ego Dominus,And you will know that I am the Lord.super quo non confundentur qui exspectant eum.For those who hope in him will not be confounded.

Numquid tolletur a forti præda?Can prey be taken from the strong?aut quod captum fuerit a robusto, salvum esse poterit?Or is anything taken captive by the powerful able to be saved?

Quia hæc dicit Dominus:For thus says the Lord:Equidem,Certainly,et captivitas a forti tolletur, even the captives will be taken away from the strong,et quod ablatum fuerit a robusto, salvabitur.even what has been taken by the powerful will be saved.Eos vero qui judicaverunt te, ego judicabo,And truly, I will judge those who have judged you,et filios tuos ego salvabo.and I will save your children.

Et cibabo hostes tuos carnibus suis,And I will feed your enemies their own flesh.et quasi musto, sanguine suo inebriabuntur,And they will be inebriated with their own blood, as with new wine.et sciet omnis caro quia ego Dominus salvans te,And all flesh will know that I am the Lord, who saves you,et redemptor tuus fortis Jacob.and your Redeemer, the Strong One of Jacob.
