Spiritus Domini super me,The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,eo quod unxerit Dominus me;for the Lord has anointed me.ad annuntiandum mansuetis misit me,He has sent me to bring good news to the meek,ut mederer contritis corde,so as to heal the contrite of heart,et prædicarem captivis indulgentiam,to preach leniency to captiveset clausis apertionem;and release to the confined,
ut prædicarem annum placabilem Domino, and so to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lordet diem ultionis Deo nostro;and the day of vindication of our God:ut consolarer omnes lugentes,to console all who are mourning,
ut ponerem lugentibus Sion, et darem eis coronam pro cinere,to take up the mourners of Zion and to give them a crown in place of ashes, oleum gaudii pro luctu,an oil of joy in place of mourning, pallium laudis pro spiritu mœroris;a cloak of praise in place of a spirit of grief.et vocabuntur in ea fortes justitiæ,And there, they shall be called the strong ones of justice, plantatio Domini ad glorificandum.the planting of the Lord, unto glorification.
Et ædificabunt deserta a sæculo,And they will rebuild the deserted places of past ages,et ruinas antiquas erigent, and they will raise up the ruins of antiquity,et instaurabunt civitates desertas, and they will repair the desolate cities, dissipatas in generationem et generationem.which had been dissipated for generation after generation.
Et stabunt alieni, et pascent pecora vestra,And foreigners will stand up and will pasture your flocks.et filii peregrinorum agricolæ et vinitores vestri erunt. And the sons of sojourners will be your farmers and the workers of your vineyards.
Vos autem sacerdotes Domini vocabimini:But you yourselves will be called the priests of the Lord.Ministri Dei nostri,It will be said to you, dicetur vobis,“You are the ministers of our God.”fortitudinem gentium comedetis,You will eat from the strength of the Gentiles,et in gloria earum superbietis.and you will pride yourself on their glory.
Pro confusione vestra dupliciInstead of your double confusion and shame,et rubore, they will praise their portion.laudabunt partem suam;Because of this, propter hoc in terra sua duplicia possidebunt, they will possess double in their land.lætitia sempiterna erit eis.Everlasting joy will be for them.
Quia ego Dominus diligens judicium,For I am the Lord,et odio habens rapinam in holocausto;who loves judgment and who holds hatred for robbery within a burnt offering.et dabo opus eorum in veritate,And I will turn their work into truth,et fœdus perpetuum feriam eis.and I will forge a perpetual covenant with them.
Et scient in gentibus semen eorum,And they will know their offspring among the nations,et germen eorum in medio populorum;and their progeny in the midst of the peoples.omnes qui viderint eos cognoscent illos,All who see them will recognize them:quia isti sunt semen cui benedixit Dominus.that these are the offspring whom the Lord has blessed.
Gaudens gaudebo in Domino,I will rejoice greatly in the Lord,et exsultabit anima mea in Deo meo,and my soul will exult in my God.quia induit me vestimentis salutis,For he has clothed me with the vestments of salvation,et indumento justitiæ circumdedit me,and he has wrapped me in the clothing of justice, quasi sponsum decoratum corona, like a groom arrayed with a crown,et quasi sponsam ornatam monilibus suis.and like a bride adorned with her jewels.
Sicut enim terra profert germen suum, et sicut hortus semen suum germinat,For as the earth brings forth its seedlings and the garden produces its seeds, sic Dominus Deus germinabit justitiam et laudem coram universis gentibus.so will the Lord God bring forth justice and praise in the sight of all the nations.
