Et factum est in diebus Achaz,And it happened in the days of Ahaz, filii Joathan, the son of Jotham, filii Oziæ,the son of Uzziah, regis Juda, ascendit Rasin, the king of Judah, that Rezin, rex Syriæ, et Phacee, the king of Syria, and Pekah, filius Romeliæ,the son of Remaliah, rex Israël,king of Israel,in Jerusalem, ad præliandum contra eam:ascended to Jerusalem to battle against it.et non potueruntBut they were not able to defeat it.
debellare eam. Et nuntiaverunt domui David,And they reported to the house of David, saying:dicentes: Requievit Syria super Ephraim.“Syria has withdrawn to Ephraim.” And his heart was shaken,Et commotum est cor ejus, with the heart of his people,et cor populi ejus, sicut moventur ligna silvarum a facie venti.just as the trees of the forest are moved by the face of the wind.
Et dixit Dominus ad Isaiam:And the Lord said to Isaiah:Egredere in occursum Achaz,Go out to meet Ahaz, you and your son, Jashub,tu et qui derelictus est Jasub, filius tuus, who was left behind, to the end of the aqueduct,ad extremum aquæductus piscinæ superioris in via agri Fullonis;at the upper pool, on the road to the fuller’s field.
et dices ad eum:And you shall say to him:Vide ut sileas;“See to it that you are silent.noli timere,Do not be afraid.et cor tuum ne formidet a duabus caudis titionum fumigantium istorum,And have no dread in your heart over the two tails of these firebrands, nearly extinguished,in ira furoris Rasin, regis Syriæ,which are the wrath of the fury of Rezin, king of Syria,et filii Romeliæ;and of the son of Remaliah.”
eo quod consilium inierit contra te Syria in malum,For Syria has undertaken a plan against you,Ephraim, with the evil of Ephraimet filius Romeliæ,and the son of Remaliah, dicentes:saying:
Ascendamus ad Judam,“Let us ascend to Judah,et suscitemus eum,and stir it up,et avellamus eum ad nos,and tear it away for ourselves,et ponamus regem in medio ejus filium Tabeel.and appoint the son of Tabeel as a king in its midst.”
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God:Non stabit,This shall not stand,et non erit istud;and this shall not be.
sed caput Syriæ Damascus,For the head of Syria is Damascus,et caput Damasci Rasin;and the head of Damascus is Rezin;et adhuc sexaginta et quinque anni, and within sixty-five years from now,et desinet Ephraim esse populus;Ephraim will cease to be a people.
et caput Ephraim Samaria,For the head of Ephraim is Samaria,et caput Samariæ filius Romeliæ.and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah.Si non credideritis,If you will not believe, non permanebitis.you will not continue.
Et adjecit Dominus loqui ad Achaz,And the Lord spoke further to Ahaz, dicens:saying:
Pete tibi signum a Domino Deo tuo,Ask for a sign for yourself from the Lord your God,in profundum inferni, from the depths below, sive in excelsum supra.even to the heights above.
Et dixit Achaz:And Ahaz said,Non petam,“I will not ask,et non tentabo Dominum.for I will not tempt the Lord.”
Et dixit:And he said:Audite ergo,“Then listen, domus David.O house of David.Numquid parum vobis est molestos esse hominibus,Is it such a small thing for you to trouble men, quia molesti estis et Deo meo?that you must also trouble my God?
Propter hoc dabit Dominus ipse vobis signum:For this reason, the Lord himself will grant to you a sign.ecce virgo concipiet,Behold, a virgin will conceive,et pariet filium, et vocabitur nomen ejus Emmanuel.and she will give birth to a son, and his name will be called Immanuel.
Butyrum et mel comedet,He will eat butter and honey,ut sciat reprobare malum, et eligere bonum.so that he may know to reject evil and to choose good.
Quia antequam sciat puer reprobare malum et eligere bonum,But even before the boy knows to refuse evil and to choose good, derelinquetur terra quam tu detestaris a facie duorum regum suorum.the land that you detest will be abandoned by the face of her two kings.
Adducet Dominus super te,The Lord will lead over you,et super populum tuum, and over your people,et super domum patris tui,and over the house of your father, dies qui non venerunt a diebus separationis Ephraim a Juda, cum rege Assyriorum.such days as have not occurred since the days of the separation of Ephraim from Judah by the king of the Assyrians.
Et erit in die illa:And this shall be in that day:sibilabit Dominus muscæ quæ est in extremo fluminum Ægypti, the Lord will call for the fly, which is in the most distant parts of the rivers of Egypt,et api quæ est in terra Assur;and for the swarm, which is in the land of Assur.
et venient,And they will arrive,et requiescent omnes in torrentibus vallium, and they all will rest in the torrents of the valleys,et in cavernis petrarum, and in the caverns of the rocks,et in omnibus frutetis, and in every thicket,et in universis foraminibus.and in every opening.
In die illa radet Dominus in novacula conducta in his qui trans flumen sunt,In that day,in rege Assyriorum, the Lord will shave with a razor the ones hired by those who are across the river, caputby the king of the Assyrians,et pilos pedum, from the head to the hairs of the feet,et barbam universam.with the entire beard.
Et erit in die illa:And this shall be in that day:nutriet homo vaccam boum,a man will raise a cow among oxen,et duas oves, and two sheep,
et præ ubertate lactis comedet butyrum;and, instead of an abundance of milk, he will eat butter.butyrum enim et mel manducabit omnis qui relictus fuerit in medio terræ.For all who are left behind in the midst of the land will eat butter and honey.
Et erit in die illa:And this shall be in that day:omnis locus ubi fuerint mille vites, every place, mille argenteis, where there were a thousand grapevines worth a thousand pieces of silver,in spinas et in vepres erunt.will become thorns and briers.
Cum sagittis et arcu ingredientur illuc:They will enter such places with arrows and bows.vepres enim et spinæ erunt in universa terra. For briers and thorns will be throughout the entire land.
Et omnes montes qui in sarculo sarrientur,But as for all the mountains, non veniet illuc terror spinarumwhich will be dug with a hoe,et veprium:the terror of thorns and briers will not approach those places.et erit in pascua bovis,And there will be pasture land for oxen,et in conculcationem pecoris.and a range for cattle.”
