Et dixit Dominus ad me:And the Lord said to me:Sume tibi librum grandem,“Take up for yourself a large book,et scribe in eo stylo hominis:and with a man’s pen write in it:Velociter spolia detrahe,‘Take away the spoils quickly;cito prædare.plunder swiftly.’”

Et adhibui mihi testes fideles,And I summoned to myself faithful witnesses:Uriam sacerdotem,Uriah, the priest,et Zachariam, and Zechariah, filium Barachiæ:the son of Berechiah.

et accessi ad prophetissam,And I joined with the prophetess,et concepit, and she conceivedet peperit filium.and gave birth to a son.Et dixit Dominus ad me:And the Lord said to me:Voca nomen ejus:“Call his name:Accelera spolia detrahere;‘Rush to take away the spoils;Festina prædari:Hurry to be plundered.’

quia antequam sciat puer vocare patrem suum et matrem suam,For before the boy knows how to call to his father and his mother, auferetur fortitudo Damasci, et spolia Samariæ,the strength of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria will be taken away, coram rege Assyriorum.in the sight of the king of the Assyrians.”

Et adjecit Dominus loqui ad me adhuc,And the Lord spoke to me further, dicens:saying:

Pro eo quod abjecit populus iste aquas Siloë,“Because this people has cast aside the waters of Shiloah,quæ vadunt cum silentio, which go forth silently,et assumpsit magis Rasin, and has instead chosen Rezinet filium Romeliæ:and the son of Remaliah,

propter hoc ecce Dominus adducet super eos aquas fluminis fortes et multas, for this reason, behold, the Lord will lead over them the waters of a river, regem Assyriorum, strong and plentiful:et omnem gloriam ejus, the king of the Assyrians with all his glory.et ascendet super omnes rivos ejus,And he will rise up throughout all his streams,et fluet super universas ripas ejus;and he will overflow all his banks.

et ibit per Judam, inundans,And he will pass through Judah,et transiens:inundating it,usque ad collum veniet.and he will cross over and arrive,Et erit extensio alarum ejus implens latitudinem terræ tuæ,even at its neck. And he will extend his wings, filling the breadth of your land,o Emmanuel!O Immanuel.”

Congregamini,O people,populi,gather together,et vincimini;and be conquered!et audite,All distant lands,universæ procul terræ:listen!confortamini,Be strengthened,et vincimini;and be conquered!accingite vos,Gird yourselves,et vincimini.and be conquered!

Inite consilium,Undertake a plan,et dissipabitur;and it will be dissipated!loquimini verbum,Speak a word,et non fiet:and it will not be done!quia nobiscum Deus.For God is with us.

Hæc enim ait Dominus ad me:For the Lord said this to me,Sicut in manu forti erudivit me,and he has instructed this to me with a strong hand,ne irem in via populi hujus, lest I go forth in the way of this people, dicens:saying:

Non dicatis: Conjuratio;“You should not say ‘It is conspiracy!’omnia enim quæ loquitur populus iste,For all that this people speaks is a conspiracy.conjuratio est: et timorem ejus ne timeatis, neque paveatis. And you should not be frightened or alarmed with their fear.

Dominum exercituum ipsum sanctificate;Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself.ipse pavor vester,Let him be your dread,et ipse terror vester:and let him be your fear.

et erit vobis in sanctificationem; And so shall he be a sanctification to you.in lapidem autem offensionis,But he will be a stone of offenseet in petram scandali, and a rock of scandal to the two houses of Israel, duabus domibus Israël;and a snarein laqueum et in ruinam habitantibus Jerusalem.and a ruin to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Et offendent ex eis plurimi,And very many of them will stumbleet cadent, and fall,et conterentur, and they will be brokenet irretientur, and entangledet capientur.and seized.

Liga testimonium,Bind the testimony, signa legem in discipulis meis.seal the law, among my disciples.”

Et exspectabo Dominum qui abscondit faciem suam a domo Jacob,And I will wait for the Lord, who has concealed his face from the house of Jacob,et præstolabor eum.and I will stand before him.

Ecce ego et pueri mei quos dedit mihi Dominus in signum,Behold: I and my children, whom the Lord has given to me as a sign and a portent,et in portentum Israël a Domino exercituum,in Israel, from the Lord of hosts, qui habitat in monte Sion:who lives on Mount Zion.

et cum dixerint ad vos:And though they say to you,Quærite a pythonibus et a divinis qui strident in incantationibus suis:“Seek from seers and diviners,” they who hiss in their incantations, numquid non populus a Deo suo requiret, should not the people seek from their God, for the sake of the living, pro vivis a mortuis?and not from the dead?

ad legem magis et ad testimonium. And this is, moreover, for the sake of the law and the testimony.Quod si non dixerint juxta verbum hoc,But if they do not speak according to this Word, non erit eis matutina lux.then he will not have the morning light.

Et transibit per eam,And he will pass by it;corruet,he will fallet esuriet;and become hungry.et cum esurierit,And when he is hungry, irascetur.he will become angry,Et maledicet regi suo,and he will speak evil against his kinget Deo suo,and his God,et suscipiet sursum, and he will lift himself upward.

et ad terram intuebitur; And he will gaze downward to the earth,et ecce tribulatio et tenebræ,and behold: tribulation and darkness, dissolutio et angustia, dissolution and distress,et caligo persequens, and a pursuing gloom.et non poterit avolare de angustia sua.For he will not be able to fly away from its distress.
