Audite verbum quod locutus est Dominus super vos,Listen to the word that the Lord has spoken concerning you, domus Israël.O house of Israel.

Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Juxta vias gentium nolite discere,“Do not choose to learn according to the ways of the Gentiles.et a signis cæli nolite metuere,And do not be willing to dread the signs of heaven,quæ timent gentes, which the Gentiles fear.

quia leges populorum vanæ sunt. For the laws of the people are empty.Quia lignum de saltu præcidit opus manus artificis in ascia:For the work of the hand of the craftsman has cut a tree from the forest with an axe.

argento et auro decoravit illud:He has adorned it with silver and gold.clavis et malleis compegit,He has put it together with nail and hammer,ut non dissolvatur:so that it will not fall apart.

in similitudinem palmæ fabricata sunt,They have been fabricated in the likeness of a palm tree,et non loquentur:and they will not speak.portata tollentur,They must be carried to be moved, quia incedere non valent.because they do not have the ability to walk.Nolite ergo timere ea,Therefore, quia nec male possunt facere,do not be willing to fear them, nec bene.for they can do neither evil nor good.”

Non est similis tui,O Lord,Domine:there is nothing similar to you.magnus es tu,You are great,et magnum nomen tuum in fortitudine.and your name is great in strength.

Quis non timebit te,Who will not fear you,o Rex gentium?O King of the nations?tuum est enim decus:For honor is yours.inter cunctos sapientes gentium,Among all the wise of the nations,et in universis regnis eorum, and within all their kingdoms, nullus est similis tui.there is nothing similar to you.

Pariter insipientesTogether,et fatui probabuntur:they will all be proven to be unwise and foolish.doctrina vanitatis eorum lignum est.The doctrine of their vanity is made of wood.

Argentum involutum de Tharsis affertur,Rolled silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz.et aurum de Ophaz: opus artificis et manus ærarii. It is the work of a craftsman, and of the hand of a coppersmith.Hyacinthus et purpura indumentum eorum:Hyacinth and purple is their clothing.opus artificum universa hæc.All these things are the work of artists.

Dominus autem Deus verus est,But the Lord is the true God.ipse Deus vivens,He is the living God and the everlasting King.et rex sempiternus. Before his indignation,Ab indignatione ejus commovebitur terra, the earth will shake.et non sustinebunt gentes comminationem ejus. And the Gentiles will not be able to withstand his threats.

Sic ergo dicetis eis:“And so, you shall speak to them in this way:Dii qui cælos et terram non fecerunt,The gods that have not made heaven and earth, pereant de terra et de his quæ sub cælo sunt!let them perish from the earth and from among those places which are under heaven.

Qui facit terram in fortitudine sua,He made the earth by his power,præparat orbem in sapientia sua,he prepared the world in his wisdom,et prudentia sua extendit cælos:and he stretched out the heavens with his understanding.

ad vocem suam dat multitudinem aquarum in cælo,At his voice, he grants a multitude of waters in the heavens,et elevat nebulas ab extremitatibus terræ:and he lifts up the clouds from the ends of the earth.fulgura in pluviam facit,He causes the lightning with the rain,et educit ventum de thesauris suis.and he leads forth the wind from his storehouses.

Stultus factus est omnis homo a scientia:Every man has become a fool concerning knowledge;confusus est artifex omnis in sculptili, every artist has been confounded by his graven image.quoniam falsum est quod conflavit,For what he has formed is false,et non est spiritus in eis.and there is no spirit in these things.

Vana sunt,These things are empty,et opus risu dignum:and they are a work deserving of ridicule.in tempore visitationis suæ peribunt. In the time of their visitation, they will perish.

Non est his similis pars Jacob:Jacob’s portion is not like their portion.qui enim formavit omnia, ipse est,For his portion is from the One who formed all things.et Israël virga hæreditatis ejus:And Israel is the staff of his inheritance.Dominus exercituum nomen illi. The Lord of hosts is his name.

Congrega de terra confusionem tuam,Gather your shame from the earth,quæ habitas in obsidione:you who are living under siege.”

quia hæc dicit Dominus:For thus says the Lord: “Behold,Ecce ego longe projiciam habitatores terræ in hac vice,in this turn, I will cast the inhabitants of the land far away.et tribulabo eos ita ut inveniantur. And I will afflict them no matter where they may be found.”

Væ mihi super contritione mea:Woe to me, concerning my destruction!pessima plaga mea.My wound is very grievous.Ego autem dixi:And yet I said:Plane hæc infirmitas mea est,Clearly, this infirmity is mine,et portabo illam.and I will carry it.

Tabernaculum meum vastatum est;My tent has been destroyed.omnes funiculi mei dirupti sunt:All my cords have been broken.filii mei exierunt a me,My sons have gone away from me;et non subsistunt.they did not remain.Non est qui extendat ultra tentorium meum,There is no one to stretch out my tent any more,et erigat pelles meas.nor to set up my curtains.

Quia stulte egerunt pastores,For the pastors have acted foolishly,et Dominum non quæsierunt:and they have not sought the Lord.propterea non intellexerunt,Because of this, they have not understood,et omnis grex eorum dispersus est.and all their flock has been dispersed.

Vox auditionis ecce venit,Behold,et commotio magna de terra aquilonis:the sound of a voice approaches,ut ponat civitates Juda solitudinem,a great commotion from the land of the north:et habitaculum draconum.so that he may make the cities of Judah into a wilderness and into a dwelling place for serpents.

Scio,I know,Domine,O Lord, quia non est hominis via ejus, that the way of man is not his own.nec viri est ut ambulet,Neither is it given to man to walket dirigat gressus suos.and to direct his own steps.

Corripe me,Correct me,Domine,O Lord, verumtamen in judicio, yet truly, do so with judgment,et non in furore tuo,and not in your fury.ne forte ad nihilum redigas me.Otherwise, you will reduce me to nothing.

Effunde indignationem tuam super gentes quæ non cognoverunt te,Pour out your indignation upon the nations that have not known you,et super provincias quæ nomen tuum non invocaverunt:and upon the provinces that have not invoked your name.quia comederunt Jacob,For they have fed upon Jacob,et devoraverunt eum,and devoured him,et consumpserunt illum, and consumed him,et decus ejus dissipaverunt.and they have utterly destroyed his honor.
