Verbum quod factum est ad Jeremiam, de omni populo Juda, in anno quarto Joakim filii Josiæ regis Juda (ipse est annus primus Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis),The word that came to Jeremiah about all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, the king of Judah. The same is the first year of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon.
quod locutus est Jeremias propheta ad omnem populum Juda,And the prophet Jeremiah spoke to all the people of Judah,et ad universos habitatores Jerusalem, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, dicens:saying:
A tertiodecimo anno Josiæ filii Amon regis Juda,“From the thirteenth year of Josiah, the son of Amon, the king of Judah, usque ad diem hanc, even until this day, iste tertius et vigesimus annus, which is the twenty-third year, factum est verbum Domini ad me,the word of the Lord has been given to me,et locutus sum ad vos,and I have spoken to you,de nocte consurgens et loquens, rising while it was still night, and speaking,et non audistis.and yet you have not listened.
Et misit Dominus ad vos omnes servos suos prophetas,And the Lord has sent to you all his servants, the prophets, consurgens diluculo, rising at first light, mittensque:and sending,et non audistis, and yet you have not listened, neque inclinastis aures vestras ut audiretis, and you have not inclined your ears, so that you would hear,
cum diceret:when he said:Revertimini unusquisque a via sua mala,Return,et a pessimis cogitationibus vestris, each one from his evil way,et habitabitis in terra quam dedit Dominus vobisand from your wicked thoughts.et patribus vestris,And you shall dwell in the land,a sæculowhich the Lord has given to you and to your fathers,et usque in sæculum:from ancient times and even forever.
et nolite ire post deos alienos,And do not choose to go after strange gods,ut serviatis eis,so that you would serve themadoretisque eos:and adore them.neque me ad iracundiam provocetis in operibus manuum vestrarum,And do not provoke me to wrath by the works of your hands.et non affligam vos.And then I will not afflict you.
Et non audistis me,And yet you have not listened to me,dicit Dominus, says the Lord,ut me ad iracundiam provocaretis in operibus manuum vestrarum, and so you have provoked me to anger with the works of your hands,in malum vestrum.to your own harm.”
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:Because of this, thus says the Lord of hosts:Pro eo quod non audistis verba mea,“Since you have not listened to my words,
ecce ego mittam et assumam universas cognationes aquilonis, behold, I will send for and take all the associates of the north, ait Dominus, says the Lord,et Nabuchodonosor regem Babylonis servum meum, and Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, my servant,et adducam eos super terram istam, and I will lead them over this land,et super habitatores ejus, and over its inhabitants,et super omnes nationes quæ in circuitu illius sunt:and over all the nations that are around it.et interficiam eos,And I will destroy them,et ponam eos in stuporem et in sibilum, et in solitudines sempiternas.and I will set them in the midst of stupor and hissing, and continual desolations.
Perdamque ex eis vocem gaudii et vocem lætitiæ,And I will perish from them the voice of gladness and the voice of rejoicing, vocem sponsi et vocem sponsæ,the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride, vocem molæ et lumen lucernæ.the sound of the millstone and the light of the lamp.
Et erit universa terra hæc in solitudinem,And this entire land will be in desolation and in stupor.et in stuporem:And all these nations will serve the king of Babylon,et servient omnes gentes istæ regi Babylonis septuaginta annis.for seventy years.
Cumque impleti fuerint septuaginta anni,And when the seventy years have been completed, visitabo super regem Babylonis et super gentem illam,I will visit their iniquity upon the king of Babylon, dicit Dominus, and upon that nation, iniquitatem eorum, and upon the land of the Chaldeans,et super terram Chaldæorum, says the Lord.et ponam illam in solitudines sempiternas. And I will set it in continual desolations.
Et adducam super terram illam omnia verba mea,And I will lead over that land all my words,quæ locutus sum contra eam, which I have spoken against it,omne quod scriptum est in libro isto, all that has been written in this book,quæcumque prophetavit Jeremias adversum omnes gentes:everything whatsoever that Jeremiah has prophesied against all the nations.
quia servierunt eis,For they have served them, cum essent gentes multæ,though these were populous nationset reges magni:and great kings.et reddam eis secundum opera eorum,And I will repay them according to their workset secundum facta manuum suarum.and according to the deeds of their hands.”
Quia sic dicit Dominus exercituum,For thus says the Lord of hosts,Deus Israël:the God of Israel:Sume calicem vini furoris hujus de manu mea,“Take the chalice of the wine of this fury from my hand.et propinabis de illo cunctis gentibus ad quas ego mittam te.And you shall cause all the nations, to which I will send you, to drink from it.
Et bibent,And they will drink,et turbabuntur et insanient a facie gladii quem ego mittam inter eos.and be stirred up, and become maddened, before the face of the sword that I will send among them.”
Et accepi calicem de manu Domini,And I received the chalice from the hand of the Lord,et propinavi cunctis gentibus ad quas misit me Dominus, and I caused all the nations, to which the Lord has sent me, to drink from it:
Jerusalem,Jerusalem,et civitatibus Juda,and the cities of Judah,et regibus ejus,and its kings,et principibus ejus,and its leaders,ut darem eos in solitudinem,so that I gave them over to desolation,et in stuporem,and stupor,et in sibilum,and hissing,et in maledictionem,and a curse,sicut est dies ista:just as it is this day.
Pharaoni regi Ægypti,“But as for Pharaoh,et servis ejus, the king of Egypt,et principibus ejus, and his servants, and his leaders,et omni populo ejus:and all his people,
et universis generaliter:and the entire populace in general:cunctis regibus terræ Ausitidis, all the kings of the land of the south,et cunctis regibus terræ Philisthiim, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines,et Ascaloni, and Ashkelon,et Gazæ,and Gaza,et Accaron, and Ekron,et reliquiis Azoti:and the remnant of Ashdod,
et Idumææ,and Idumea,et Moab,and Moab,et filiis Ammon:and the sons of Ammon,
et cunctis regibus Tyri, and all the kings of Tyre,et universis regibus Sidonis, and all the kings of Sidon,et regibus terræ insularum qui sunt trans mare:and the kings of the land of the islands that are across the sea,
et Dedan, and Dedan,et Thema, and Tema,et Buz,and Buz,et universis qui attonsi sunt in comam:and all those who have shaved off their hair,
et cunctis regibus Arabiæ,and all the kings of Arabia,et cunctis regibus occidentis, and all the kings of the west, qui habitant in deserto:who live in the desert,
et cunctis regibus Zambri, and all the kings of Zimri,et cunctis regibus Elam, and all the kings of Elam,et cunctis regibus Medorum:and all the kings of Media,
cunctis quoque regibus aquilonis, and likewise,de propeall the kings of the north from near to far,et de longe, each one facing his brother, unicuique contra fratrem suum:and all the kingdoms upon the face of the earth,et omnibus regnis terræ quæ super faciem ejus sunt:and the king of Sesac:et rex Sesach bibet post eos.all these shall drink after them.
Et dices ad eos:And you shall say to them:Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum,Thus says the Lord of hosts,Deus Israël:the God of Israel:Bibite,Drink,et inebriamini, and be inebriated,et vomite:and vomit,et cadite, and fall down.neque surgatis a facie gladii quem ego mittam inter vos.And you shall not rise up before the face of the sword that I will send among you.
Cumque noluerint accipere calicem de manu tua ut bibant,And if they refuse to receive the cup from your hand and to drink, dices ad eos: Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord of hosts:Bibentes bibetis:Certainly, you shall drink!
quia ecce in civitate in qua invocatum est nomen meum ego incipiam affligere,For behold,et vos quasi innocentesI am beginning to afflict the city in which my name has been invoked,et immunes eritis?and will you be innocent and immune?non eritis immunes:You will not be immune!gladium enim ego voco super omnes habitatores terræ,For I will call the sword over all the inhabitants of the earth, dicit Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.
Et tu prophetabis ad eos omnia verba hæc,And you shall prophesy to them all these words,et dices ad illos:and you shall say to them:Dominus de excelso rugiet,The Lord will roar from on high,et de habitaculo sancto suo dabit vocem suam:and he will utter his voice from his holy habitation. When roaring, rugiens rugiet super decorem suum:he will roar over the place of his beauty. He will call out, celeuma quasi calcantium concinetur adversus omnes habitatores terræ.like those who chant in rhythm as they trample the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.
Pervenit sonitus usque ad extrema terræ,The sound of it will penetrate even to the ends of the earth.quia judicium Domino cum gentibus:For the Lord is entering into judgment with the nations.judicatur ipse cum omni carne. He himself is entering into judgment with all flesh.Impios tradidi gladio,I have delivered the impious to the sword, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.”
Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold,Ecce afflictio egredietur de gente in gentem,an affliction will go forth from nation to nation,et turbo magnus egredietur a summitatibus terræ.and a great whirlwind will go forth from the ends of the earth.
Et erunt interfecti Domini in die illa,And the slain of the Lord will be, on that day,a summo terræ usque ad summum ejus:from one end of the earth, even to the other end.non plangentur,They will not be mourned,et non colligentur, and they will not be gathered, neque sepelientur:and they will not be buried.in sterquilinium super faciem terræ jacebunt. They will lie upon the face of the earth like dung.
Ululate,Wail, pastores,O shepherds,et clamate, and cry out!et aspergite vos cinere,And sprinkle yourselves with ashes, optimates gregis:O nobles of the flock!quia completi sunt dies vestri ut interficiamini,For the days have been completed that lead to your slaughteret dissipationes vestræ:and your destruction.et cadetis quasi vasa pretiosa. And you will fall like precious vessels.
Et peribit fuga a pastoribus,And escape will flee from the shepherds,et salvatio ab optimatibus gregis.and safety will flee from the nobility of the flock.”
Vox clamoris pastorum,There is a voice of outcry from the shepherds,et ululatus optimatum gregis, and a wailing among the nobles among the flock!quia vastavit Dominus pascua eorum:For the Lord has laid waste to their pastures.
et conticuerunt arva pacis a facie iræ furoris Domini. And the fields of peace have been silenced before the face of the fury of the Lord.
Dereliquit quasi leo umbraculum suum,He has abandoned those he sheltered like a lion.quia facta est terra eorum in desolationem a facie iræ columbæ,For the earth has become a desolation before the face of the anger of the dove,et a facie iræ furoris Domini.and before the face of the fury of the Lord.
