In principio regni Joakim filii Josiæ regis Juda,In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, factum est verbum istud a Domino, the king of Judah, this word came from the Lord, dicens:saying:

Hæc dicit Dominus:“Thus says the Lord:Sta in atrio domus Domini, et loqueris ad omnes civitates Juda,Stand in the atrium of the house of the Lord, and speak to all the cities of Judah,de quibus veniunt ut adorent in domo Domini universos sermones quos ego mandavi tibi ut loquaris ad eos:from which they come to adore in the house of the Lord, all the words that I have commanded you to speak to them.noli subtrahere verbum,Do not choose to subtract any word.

si forte audiant,So may they hear and be converted,et convertantur unusquisque a via sua mala, each one from his evil way.et pœniteat me mali quod cogito facere eis propter malitiam studiorum eorum. And then I may repent of the evil that I plan to do to them because of the wickedness of their pursuits.

Et dices ad eos: Hæc dicit Dominus:And you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord:Si non audieritis me,If you will not listen to me,ut ambuletis in lege mea quam dedi vobis,so that you walk in my law, which I have given to you,

ut audiatis sermones servorum meorum prophetarum quos ego misi ad vos,so that you listen to the words of my servants, the prophets, whom I have sent to you,de nocte consurgens, who arise while it is still night,et dirigens, et non audistis:and though they give guidance, you do not listen,

dabo domum istam sicut Silo, then I will make this house like Shiloh,et urbem hanc dabo in maledictionem cunctis gentibus terræ.and I will make this city into a curse for all the nations of the earth.”

Et audierunt sacerdotes,And the priests, and the prophets,et prophetæ, et omnis populus, Jeremiam loquentem verba hæc in domo Domini.and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord.

Cumque complesset Jeremias, loquens omnia quæ præceperat ei Dominus ut loqueretur ad universum populum,And when Jeremiah had completed speaking all that the Lord had instructed him to speak to all the people, apprehenderunt eum sacerdotes, then the priests, and the prophets,et prophetæ, et omnis populus, and all the people apprehended him, dicens:saying:Morte moriatur.“You shall be put to death.”

Quare prophetavit in nomine Domini,“Why has he prophesied in the name of the Lord, dicens:saying:Sicut Silo erit domus hæc,‘Like Shiloh, so shall this house be,’et urbs ista desolabitur eo quod non sit habitator?and, ‘This city shall be made desolate, even without an inhabitant?’”Et congregatus est omnis populus adversus Jeremiam in domo Domini. And all the people were gathered together against Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.

Et audierunt principes Juda verba hæc,And the leaders of Judah heard these words.et ascenderunt de domo regis in domum Domini,And they ascended from the house of the king to the house of the Lord,et sederunt in introitu portæ domus Domini novæ.and they sat at the entrance by the new gate of the house of the Lord.

Et locuti sunt sacerdotes et prophetæ ad principes, et ad omnem populum,And the priests and the prophets spoke to the leaders and to all the people, dicentes: Judicium mortis est viro huic, saying: “A judgment of death is for this man.quia prophetavit adversus civitatem istam,For he has prophesied against this city, sicut audistis auribus vestris.just as you have heard with your own ears.”

Et ait Jeremias ad omnes principes, et ad universum populum,And Jeremiah spoke to all the leaders and to the entire people, dicens:saying:Dominus misit me ut prophetarem ad domum istam, et ad civitatem hanc,“The Lord has sent me to prophesy, about this house and about this city, omnia verba quæ audistis.all the words that you have heard.

Nunc ergo bonas facite vias vestras et studia vestra,Now, therefore, make your ways and your intentions good,et audite vocem Domini Dei vestri, and heed the voice of the Lord your God.et pœnitebit Dominum mali quod locutus est adversum vos.And then the Lord will repent of the evil that he has spoken against you.

Ego autem ecce in manibus vestris sum:But as for me, behold, I am in your hands.facite mihi quod bonum et rectum est in oculis vestris.Do to me what is good and right in your eyes.

Verumtamen scitoteYet truly,et cognoscite quod, know and understand this:si occideritis me,if you kill me,sanguinem innocentem tradetis contra vosmetipsos, you will be bringing innocent blood against yourselves,et contra civitatem istam, and against this city and its inhabitants.et habitatores ejus:For in truth,in veritate enim misit me Dominus ad vos,the Lord sent me to you,ut loquerer in auribus vestris omnia verba hæc.so as to speak all these words in your hearing.”

Et dixerunt principes et omnis populus ad sacerdotes et ad prophetas:And then the leaders and all the people said to the priests and to the prophets:Non est viro huic judicium mortis,“There is no judgment of death against this man.quia in nomine Domini Dei nostri locutus est ad nos.For he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.”

Surrexerunt ergo viri de senioribus terræ,Then some of the elders of the land rose up.et dixerunt ad omnem cœtum populi,And they spoke to the entire assembly of the people, loquentes:saying:

Michæas de Morasthi fuit propheta in diebus Ezechiæ regis Juda,“Micah from Moresheth was a prophet in the days of Hezekiah, the king of Judah,et ait ad omnem populum Juda, and he spoke to all the people of Judah, dicens:saying:Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:‘Thus says the Lord of hosts:Sion quasi ager arabitur,Zion will be ploughed like a field.et Jerusalem in acervum lapidum erit, et mons domus in excelsa silvarum. And Jerusalem will be a pile of stones. And the mountain of the house will be like the forests of high places.’

Numquid morte condemnavit eum Ezechias rex Juda,Did the king of Judah, Hezekiah, with all of Judah,et omnis Juda? numquid non timuerunt Dominum, condemn him to death? Did they not fear the Lord,et deprecati sunt faciem Domini, and petition the face of the Lord?et pœnituit Dominum mali quod locutus fuerat adversum eos?And so the Lord repented of the evil that he had spoken against them.Itaque nos facimus malum grande contra animas nostras. Therefore, we are committing a great evil against our own souls.

Fuit quoque vir prophetans in nomine Domini,Likewise, there was a man prophesying in the name of the Lord:Urias filius Semei de Cariathiarim,Uriah, the son of Shemaiah, of Kiriath-jearim.et prophetavit adversus civitatem istam, et adversus terram hanc,And he prophesied against this city and against this land, juxta omnia verba Jeremiæ.in accord with all the words of Jeremiah.

Et audivit rex Joakim,And king Jehoiakim,et omnes potentes et principes ejus, with all his warriors and leaders, verba hæc,heard these words.et quæsivit rex interficere eum:And so the king sought to put him to death.et audivit Urias,And Uriah heard,et timuit, and was afraid, fugitque, and fled,et ingressus est Ægyptum.and he entered into Egypt.

Et misit rex Joakim viros in Ægyptum,And king Jehoiakim sent men into Egypt:Elnathan filium Achobor,Elnathan,et viros cum eo,the son of Achbor,in Ægyptum, and the men who went with him into Egypt.

et eduxerunt Uriam de Ægypto,And they led Uriah out of Egypt.et adduxerunt eum ad regem Joakim,And they brought him to king Jehoiakim,et percussit eum gladio, and he struck him down with the sword.et projecit cadaver ejus in sepulchris vulgi ignobilis. And he cast his dead body among the graves of the common people.”

Igitur manus Ahicam filii Saphan fuit cum Jeremia,But the hand of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, was with Jeremiah,ut non traderetur in manus populi,so that he would not be delivered into the hands of the people,et interficerent eum.and so that they would not put him to death.
