In principio regni Joakim filii Josiæ regis Juda,In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, factum est verbum istud ad Jeremiam a Domino, the king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord, dicens:saying:
Hæc dicit Dominus ad me:“Thus says the Lord to me:Fac tibi vincula et catenas,Make bands and chains for yourself.et pones eas in collo tuo,And you shall place them on your neck.
et mittes eas ad regem Edom,And you shall send them to the king of Edom,et ad regem Moab, and to the king of Moab,et ad regem filiorum Ammon, and to the king of the sons of Ammon,et ad regem Tyri, and to the king of Tyre,et ad regem Sidonis, and to the king of Sidon,in manu nuntiorum qui venerunt Jerusalem ad Sedeciam regem Juda.by the hand of the messengers who came to Jerusalem, to Zedekiah, the king of Judah.
Et præcipies eis ut ad dominos suos loquantur:And you shall instruct them to say to their masters:Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum,Thus says the Lord of hosts,Deus Israël:the God of Israel:Hæc dicetis ad dominos vestros:You shall say these things to your masters:
Ego feci terram,I made the earth,et homines, and the menet jumenta quæ sunt super faciem terræ,and beasts which are upon the face of the earth,in fortitudine mea magna,by my great strengthet in brachio meo extento, and by my outstretched arm.et dedi eam ei qui placuit in oculis meis. And I have given it to whomever it was pleasing in my eyes.
Et nunc itaque ego dedi omnes terras istas in manu Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis servi mei: insuper et bestias agri dedi ei, ut serviant illi:And now, therefore, I have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, my servant. Moreover, I have given to him also the beasts of the field, so that they may serve him.
et servient ei omnes gentes,And all the nations will serve him,et filio ejus, and his son,et filio filii ejus, and his son’s son.donec veniat tempus terræ ejus et ipsius:Many nations and great kings will serve him,et servient ei gentes multæ et reges magni.until the time arrives for him and his land.
Gens autemBut the nation or kingdom that will not serve Nebuchadnezzar,et regnum quod non servierit Nabuchodonosor regi Babylonis, the king of Babylon,et quicumque non curvaverit collum suum sub jugo regis Babylonis, and whoever will not bend his neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon,in gladio,I will visit upon that nation with the sword,et in fame, and with famine,et in peste visitabo super gentem illam, and with pestilence, ait Dominus, says the Lord, donec consumam eos in manu ejus.until I consume them by his hand.
Vos ergo nolite audire prophetas vestros, et divinos,Therefore, you should not choose to listen to your own prophets,et somniatores, and diviners,et augures, and dreamers,et maleficos, and soothsayers, qui dicunt vobis:and sorcerers, who say to you:Non servietis regi Babylonis:‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon.’
quia mendacium prophetant vobis,For they prophesy lies to you,ut longe vos faciant de terra vestra,so that they may cause you to be far from your own country,et ejiciant vos,and may cast you out,et pereatis.and may cause you to perish.
Porro gens quæ subjecerit cervicem suam sub jugo regis Babylonis,Furthermore, the nation which will bend its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon,et servierit ei,and which will serve him, dimittam eam in terra sua,I will permit them to remain in their own land, dicit Dominus, et colet eam, says the Lord. And they will cultivate it,et habitabit in ea.and they will live in it.”
Et ad Sedeciam regem Juda locutus sum secundum omnia verba hæc,And I spoke to Zedekiah, the king of Judah, according to all these words, dicens:saying:Subjicite colla vestra sub jugo regis Babylonis,“Subject your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon,et servite ei et populo ejus, et vivetis.and serve him and his people, and you will live.
Quare moriemini,Why should you suffer death,tu et populus tuus, you and your people, gladio,by the sword,et fame, and famine,et peste, and pestilence, sicut locutus est Dominus ad gentem quæ servire noluerit regi Babylonis?just as the Lord has spoken against any nation that refuses to serve the king of Babylon?
Nolite audire verba prophetarum dicentium vobis:Do not choose to listen to the words of the prophets, saying to you:Non servietis regi Babylonis:‘You will not serve the king of Babylon.’quia mendacium ipsi loquuntur vobis:For they are speaking a lie to you.
quia non misi eos,For I have not sent them, ait Dominus, says the Lord.et ipsi prophetant in nomine meo mendaciter,And they prophesy falsely in my name,ut ejiciant vos,so that they may cast you out,et pereatis, and so that you may perish, tam vos quam prophetæ qui vaticinantur vobis.both you and the prophets who make predictions for you.”
Et ad sacerdotes,I spoke also to the priestset ad populum istum, and to this people, locutus sum, saying:dicens:“Thus says the Lord:Hæc dicit Dominus:Do not choose to listen to the words of your prophets,Nolite audire verba prophetarum vestrorum, who prophesy to you,qui prophetant vobis, saying:dicentes:‘Behold,Ecce vasa Domini revertentur de Babylone nunc cito:the vessels of the Lord will now quickly be returned from Babylon.’mendacium enim prophetant vobis. For they are prophesying to you a lie.
Nolite ergo audire eos:Therefore, do not choose to listen to them, sed servite regi Babylonis, but instead, serve the king of Babylon,ut vivatis:so that you may live.quare datur hæc civitas in solitudinem? Why should this city be given over into desolation?
Et si prophetæ sunt,But if they are prophets,et est verbum Domini in eis,and if the word of the Lord is in them, occurrant Domino exercituum, then let them intercede before the Lord of hosts,ut non veniant vasa quæ derelicta fuerant in domo Domini,so that the vessels that were left behind in the house of the Lord,et in domo regis Juda, and in the house of the king of Judah,et in Jerusalem, and in Jerusalem,in Babylonem.may not go to Babylon.
Quia hæc dicit Dominus exercituum ad columnas,For thus says the Lord of hosts to the pillars,et ad mare, and to the sea of brass,et ad bases, and to the bases,et ad reliqua vasorum quæ remanserunt in civitate hac,and to the remainder of the vessels that have been left behind in this city,
quæ non tulit Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis cum transferret Jechoniam filium Joakim regem Juda de Jerusalem in Babylonem, et omnes optimates Juda et Jerusalem:which Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, did not take when he carried away Jeconiah, the son of Jehoiakim, the king of Judah, from Jerusalem into Babylon, with all the nobility of Judah and Jerusalem:
quia hæc dicit Dominus exercituum,For thus says the Lord of hosts,Deus Israël,the God of Israel,ad vasa quæ derelicta sunt in domo Domini, et in domo regis Juda et Jerusalem:to the vessels that were left behind in the house of the Lord and in the house of the king of Judah and Jerusalem:
In Babylonem transferentur,They shall be carried away to Babylon,et ibi erunt usque ad diem visitationis suæ,and there they shall be, until the day of their visitation, dicit Dominus, et afferri faciam ea,says the Lord. And then I will cause them to be carried back,et restitui in loco isto.and to be restored to this place.
