Verbum quod factum est ad Jeremiam a Domino,The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of Zedekiah,in anno decimo Sedeciæ regis Juda, the king of Judah.ipse est annus decimusoctavus Nabuchodonosor. The same is the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.

Tunc exercitus regis Babylonis obsidebat Jerusalem,It was then that the army of the king of Babylon besieged Jerusalem. And Jeremiah,et Jeremias propheta erat clausus in atrio carceris qui erat in domo regis Juda.the prophet, was confined to the atrium of the prison, which was in the house of the king of Judah.

Clauserat enim eum Sedecias rex Juda,For Zedekiah, the king of Judah, had confined him, dicens:saying:Quare vaticinaris,“Why do you make predictions, dicens:saying:Hæc dicit Dominus:‘Thus says the Lord:Ecce ego dabo civitatem istam in manus regis Babylonis,Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon,et capiet eam:and he will capture it?

et Sedecias rex Juda non effugiet de manu Chaldæorum,And Zedekiah, the king of Judah, will not escape from the hand of the Chaldeans.sed tradetur in manus regis Babylonis:Instead, he will be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon.et loquetur os ejus cum ore illius,And he will speak to him, mouth to mouth,et oculi ejus oculos illius videbunt:and he will see him, eye to eye.

et in Babylonem ducet Sedeciam,And he will lead Zedekiah to Babylon.et ibi erit donec visitem eum,And he will be there until I visit him,ait Dominus:says the Lord.si autem dimicaveritis adversum Chaldæos,So then, if you contend against the Chaldeans, nihil prosperum habebitis?you will have no success.’”

Et dixit Jeremias:And Jeremiah said:Factum est verbum Domini ad me,“The word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:

Ecce Hanameel filius Sellum,Behold, Hanamel, the son of Shallum, patruelis tuus, veniet ad te,your cousin, will come to you, dicens:saying:Eme tibi agrum meum qui est in Anathoth,‘Buy for yourself my field, which is in Anathoth.tibi enim competit ex propinquitate ut emas. For it is your right, as next of kin, to buy it.’

Et venit ad me Hanameel filius patrui mei,And in accord with the word of the Lord, Hanamel, secundum verbum Domini, the son of my uncle, came to me,ad vestibulum carceris,to the entrance of the prison,et ait ad me:and he said to me:Posside agrum meum qui est in Anathoth, in terra Benjamin,‘Take possession of my field, which is in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin.quia tibi competit hæreditas,For the right of inheritance is yours,et tu propinquus es ut possideas.and as the next of kin you may possess it.’Intellexi autem quod verbum Domini esset:Then I understood that this was the word of the Lord.

et emi agrum ab Hanameel filio patrui mei,And I bought the field, which is in Anathoth, from Hanamel, qui est in Anathoth, et appendi ei argentum:the son of my uncle. And I weighed out the money to him, septem stateres, et decem argenteos.seven small coins and ten pieces of silver.

Et scripsi in libro,And I wrote it in a booket signavi, and signed it,et adhibui testes, and I summoned witnesses.et appendi argentum in statera. And I weighed out the silver on a scale.

Et accepi librum possessionis signatum,And I received the signed deed of possession,et stipulationes, and the stipulations,et rata, and the ratifications,et signa forinsecus:with the exterior seals.

et dedi librum possessionis Baruch filio Neri filii Maasiæ,And I gave the deed of possession to Baruch, the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah,in oculis Hanameel patruelis mei,in the sight of Hanamel, the son of my uncle,in oculis testium qui scripti erant in libro emptionis,in the sight of the witnesses who had been recorded in the book of the purchase,et in oculis omnium Judæorum qui sedebant in atrio carceris.and in the sight of all the Jews who were sitting in the atrium of the prison.

Et præcepi Baruch coram eis,And I instructed Baruch, in their sight, dicens:saying:

Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum,Thus says the Lord of hosts,Deus Israël:the God of Israel:Sume libros istos,‘Take these writings, librum emptionis hunc signatum, this sealed deed of purchase,et librum hunc qui apertus est,and this deed which is open,et pone illos in vase fictili, and place them in an earthen vessel,ut permanere possint diebus multis:so that they will be preserved for many days.’

hæc enim dicit Dominus exercituum,For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:Deus Israël:‘Houses, and fields,Adhuc possidebuntur domus, et agri, and vineyards will be possessed still,et vineæ in terra ista.in this land.’

Et oravi ad Dominum, postquam tradidi librum possessionis Baruch filio Neri, dicens:And after I had delivered the deed of possession to Baruch, the son of Neri, I prayed to the Lord, saying:

Heu!Alas, heu!alas, heu!alas,Domine Deus,O Lord God!ecce tu fecisti cælumBehold,et terram in fortitudine tua magna, you have made heaven and earth,et in brachio tuo extento:by your great strength and by your outstretched arm.non erit tibi difficile omne verbum:No word is difficult for you.

qui facis misericordiam in millibus,You act with mercy a thousand-fold,et reddis iniquitatem patrum in sinum filiorum eorum post eos:but you repay the iniquity of the fathers into the sinews of their sons after them.fortissime,The Lord of hosts is your name:magne, most strong,et potens, great,Dominus exercituum nomen tibi.and powerful!

Magnus consilio,You are great in counselet incomprehensibilis cogitatu:and incomprehensible in thought.cujus oculi aperti sunt super omnes vias filiorum Adam,Your eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of Adam,ut reddas unicuique secundum vias suas,so that you may repay each one according to his wayset secundum fructum adinventionum ejus.and according to the fruit of his intentions.

Qui posuisti signa et portenta in terra Ægypti usque ad diem hanc,You caused signs and portents in the land of Egypt, and in Israel,et in Israël,and among men,et in hominibus, even until this day.et fecisti tibi nomen sicut est dies hæc.And you have made a name for yourself, just as in this day.

Et eduxisti populum tuum Israël de terra Ægypti,And you have led your people Israel away from the land of Egypt,in signis et in portentis, with signs and portents,et in manu robusta et in brachio extento, and with a robust hand and an outstretched arm,et in terrore magno:and with great terror.

et dedisti eis terram hanc,And you have given them this land, quam jurasti patribus eorum ut dares eis, which you swore, to their fathers, that you would give to them, terram fluentem lacte et melle.a land flowing with milk and honey.

Et ingressi sunt,And they entered it and possessed it.et possederunt eam,But they did not obey your voice,et non obedierunt voci tuæ,and they did not walk in your law.et in lege tua non ambulaverunt:And they did not do all of the things that you commanded them to do.omnia quæ mandasti eis ut facerent non fecerunt,And so,et evenerunt eis omnia mala hæc.all of these evils have happened to them.

Ecce munitiones exstructæ sunt adversum civitatem ut capiatur,Behold, fortifications were built against the city, so as to capture it.et urbs data est in manus Chaldæorum qui præliantur adversus eam,And the city was given into the hands of the Chaldeans, who fight against it,a facie gladii, before the face of the sword,et famis, and of famine,et pestilentiæ:and of pestilence.et quæcumque locutus es, acciderunt,And what you have spoken has occurred,ut tu ipse cernis.just as you yourself discern.

Et tu dicis mihi,So why, O Lord God,Domine Deus:are you saying to me:Eme agrum argento,‘Buy a field with money,et adhibe testes, and summon witnesses,’cum urbs data sit in manus Chaldæorum?while the city is being given into the hands of the Chaldeans?”

Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam,And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, dicens:saying:

Ecce ego Dominus Deus universæ carnis:“Behold, I am the Lord God; I am above all flesh.numquid mihi difficile erit omne verbum? Can any word be difficult for me?

Propterea hæc dicit Dominus:Therefore, thus says the Lord: Behold,Ecce ego tradam civitatem istam in manus Chaldæorum,I will deliver this city into the hands of the Chaldeans,et in manus regis Babylonis, and into the hands of the king of Babylon,et capient eam.and they will capture it.

Et venient Chaldæi præliantes adversum urbem hanc,And the Chaldeans fighting against this city will advance,et succendent eam igni, and set fire to it,et comburent eam,and burn it,et domos in quarum domatibus sacrificabant Baal, along with the houses on whose roofs they were offering sacrifice to Baal and were pouring out libations to strange gods,et libabant diis alienis libamina ad irritandum me.so that they provoked me to wrath.

Erant enim filii Israël et filii Juda jugiter facientes malum in oculis meis ab adolescentia sua:For the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah, from their youth, have continually done evil in my eyes.filii Israël,The sons of Israel, qui usque nunc exacerbant me in opere manuum suarum, even until now, have been provoking me with the work of their hands, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.

Quia in furore et in indignatione mea facta est mihi civitas hæc,For this city has been a cause of fury and indignation to me,a die qua ædificaverunt eam usque ad diem istam qua auferetur de conspectu meo, from the day when they built it, until this day, in which it will be taken away from my sight,

propter malitiam filiorum Israël et filiorum Juda, quam fecerunt ad iracundiam me provocantes, because of all the wickedness of the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah, which they have done, ipsi et reges eorum, provoking me to wrath, principes eorum, they and their kings,et sacerdotes eorum, et prophetæ eorum, their leaders and their priests and their prophets, viri Juda et habitatores Jerusalem.the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Et verterunt ad me terga,And they have turned their backs to me,et non facies, and not their faces.cum docerem eos diluculoAnd though I taught them and instructed them,et erudirem, rising at first light,et nollent audire, they were not willing to listen,ut acciperent disciplinam.so that they would receive discipline.

Et posuerunt idola sua in domo in qua invocatum est nomen meum,And they have placed their idols in the house where my name is invoked,ut polluerent eam.so that they defiled it.

Et ædificaverunt excelsa Baal quæ sunt in valle filii Ennom,And they have built the exalted places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom,ut initiarent filios suos et filias suas Moloch,so that they may initiate their sons and their daughters into Molech, quod non mandavi eis, though I did not command, nec ascendit in cor meum ut facerent abominationem hanc:nor did it enter into my heart, that they should do this abomination,et in peccatum deducerent Judam.and so lead Judah into sin.

Et nunc propter ista,And now, because of these things,hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël ad civitatem hanc, thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to this city,de qua vos dicitis quod tradetur in manus regis Babylonis, in gladio, about which you say that it will be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon by the sword,et in fame, and by famine,et in peste:and by pestilence:

Ecce ego congregabo eos de universis terris ad quas ejeci eos in furore meo,Behold, I will gather them together from all the lands to which I have cast them out in my fury,et in ira mea,and in my wrath,et in indignatione grandi:and in my great indignation.et reducam eos ad locum istum,And I will lead them back to this place,et habitare eos faciam confidenter:and I will cause them to live in confidence.

et erunt mihi in populum,And they will be my people,et ego ero eis in Deum.and I will be their God.

Et dabo eis cor unum,And I will give to them one heartet viam unam, and one way,ut timeant me universis diebus,so that they may fear me all their days,et bene sit eis,and so that it may be well with them,et filiis eorum post eos.and with their sons after them.

Et feriam eis pactum sempiternum,And I will form an everlasting covenant with them,et non desinam eis benefacere:and I will not cease to do good for them.et timorem meum dabo in corde eorum,And I will put my fear into their heart,ut non recedant a me.so that they do not withdraw from me.

Et lætabor super eis,And I will rejoice over them, cum bene eis fecero:while I do good for them.et plantabo eos in terra ista in veritate,And I will plant them in this land,in toto corde meoin truth,et in tota anima mea.with my whole heart and with my whole soul.

Quia hæc dicit Dominus:For thus says the Lord:Sicut adduxi super populum istum omne malum hoc grande,Just as I have led over this people all this great evil, sic adducam super eos omne bonum quod ego loquor ad eos.so will I lead over them all the good that I am speaking to them now.

Et possidebuntur agri in terra ista,And fields will be possessed in this land,de qua vos dicitis quod deserta sit, about which you say that it is desolate because there remains neither maneo quod non remanserit homo et jumentum, nor beast,et data sit in manus Chaldæorum.and because it has been given into the hands of the Chaldeans.

Agri ementur pecunia,Fields will be bought for money,et scribentur in libro, et imprimetur signum, and deeds will be written and signed,et testis adhibebitur, and witnesses will be summoned,in terra Benjamin et in circuitu Jerusalem,in the land of Benjamin and all around Jerusalem,in civitatibus Juda,in the cities of Judah,et in civitatibus montanis, and in the cities on the mountains,et in civitatibus campestribus, and in the cities on the plains,et in civitatibus quæ ad austrum sunt, and in the cities that are toward the south.quia convertam captivitatem eorum,For I will convert their captivity, ait Dominus.says the Lord.”
