Audivit autem Saphatias filius Mathan,Then Shephatiah, the son of Mattan,et Gedelias filius Phassur, and Gedaliah, the son of Pashhur,et Juchal filius Selemiæ,and Jehucal, the son of Shelemiah,et Phassur filius Melchiæ,and Pashhur, the son of Malchiah, sermones quos Jeremias loquebatur ad omnem populum, heard the words that Jeremiah was speaking to all the people, dicens:saying:
Hæc dicit Dominus:“Thus says the Lord:Quicumque manserit in civitate hac, morietur gladio,Whoever will remain in this city will die by the sword, and by famine,et fame, et peste:and by pestilence.qui autem profugerit ad Chaldæos, vivet,But whoever will flee away from the Chaldeans,et erit anima ejus sospes et vivens.will live, and his soul will dwell in safety.
Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Tradendo tradetur civitas hæc in manu exercitus regis Babylonis,This city will certainly be delivered into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon,et capiet eam.and he will capture it.”
Et dixerunt principes regi:And the leaders said to the king:Rogamus ut occidatur homo iste:“We petition you to put this man to death.de industria enim dissolvit manus virorum bellantium qui remanserunt in civitate hac,For he is deliberately weakening the hands of the men of war, who have remained in this city,et manus universi populi, and the hands of the people, loquens ad eos juxta verba hæc:by speaking to them with these words.siquidem homo iste non quærit pacem populo huic,For this man is certainly not seeking peace for this people, sed malum.but evil.”
Et dixit rex Sedecias:And king Zedekiah said:Ecce ipse in manibus vestris est:“Behold, he is in your hands.nec enim fas est regem vobis quidquam negare. For it is not fitting for the king to deny you anything.”
Tulerunt ergo Jeremiam, et projecerunt eum in lacum Melchiæ filii Amelech,Therefore, they took Jeremiah and cast him into the pit of Malchiah, qui erat in vestibulo carceris:the son of Amelech, which was at the entrance to the prison.et submiserunt Jeremiam funibus in lacum,And they lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the pit,in quo non erat aqua,in which there was no water, sed lutum:but only mud.descendit itaque Jeremias in cœnum. And so Jeremiah descended into the mire.
Audivit autem Abdemelech Æthiops,Now Ebedmelech, vir eunuchus,an Ethiopian man,qui erat in domo regis,a eunuch who was in the king’s house, quod misissent Jeremiam in lacum.heard that they had sent Jeremiah into the pit,Porro rex sedebat in porta Benjamin:and also that the king was sitting at the gate of Benjamin.
et egressus est Abdemelech de domo regis,And so Ebedmelech departed from the king’s house,et locutus est ad regem, and he spoke to the king, dicens:saying:
Domine mi rex,“My lord the king, male fecerunt viri isti omnia quæcumque perpetrarunt contra Jeremiam prophetam, these men have done evil in all that they have perpetrated against Jeremiah the prophet, mittentes eum in lacum, ut moriatur ibi fame:casting him into the pit so that he would die there from famine.non sunt enim panes ultra in civitate. For there is no more bread in the city.”
Præcepit itaque rex Abdemelech Æthiopi,And so the king instructed Ebedmelech, the Ethiopian, dicens:saying:Tolle tecum hinc triginta viros,“Take with you thirty men from here,et leva Jeremiam prophetam de lacu, and lift Jeremiah the prophet from the pit, antequam moriatur.before he dies.”
Assumptis ergo Abdemelech secum viris,Therefore, Ebedmelech, taking the men with him, ingressus est domum regis, quæ erat sub cellario, entered into the king’s house to a place below the storehouse.et tulit inde veteres pannos, et antiqua quæ computruerant,And he took from there old garments, no longer in use,et submisit ea ad Jeremiam in lacum per funiculos.and he sent them down by rope to Jeremiah in the pit.
Dixitque Abdemelech Æthiops ad Jeremiam:And Ebedmelech,Pone veteres pannos, the Ethiopian,et hæc scissasaid to Jeremiah:et putrida,“Place these old garments, sub cubito manuum tuarum, and these cut and decaying cloths,et super funes.under your arms and over the ropes.”Fecit ergo Jeremias sic,And Jeremiah did so.
et extraxerunt Jeremiam funibus,And they pulled up Jeremiah with the ropes,et eduxerunt eum de lacu:and they led him away from the pit.mansit autem Jeremias in vestibulo carceris. And Jeremiah remained in the vestibule of the prison.
Et misit rex Sedecias,And king Zedekiah sent and took Jeremiah the prophet to him at the third gate,et tulit ad se Jeremiam prophetam ad ostium tertium quod erat in domo Domini:which was at the house of the Lord.et dixit rex ad Jeremiam:And the king said to Jeremiah:Interrogo ego te sermonem,“I will question you about a matter.ne abscondas a me aliquid. You shall conceal nothing from me.”
Dixit autem Jeremias ad Sedeciam:Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah:Si annuntiavero tibi,“If I announce to you, numquid non interficies me?will you not put me to death?et si consilium dedero tibi,And if I give you counsel, non me audies.you will not listen to me.”
Juravit ergo rex Sedecias Jeremiæ clam,Then king Zedekiah swore to Jeremiah, secretly, dicens:saying:Vivit Dominus,“As the Lord lives, qui fecit nobis animam hanc, who made this soul for us,si occidero te,I will not kill you,et si tradidero te in manus virorum istorum qui quærunt animam tuam.nor will I deliver you into the hands of those men who are seeking your life.”
Et dixit Jeremias ad Sedeciam:And Jeremiah said to Zedekiah:Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israël:“Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:Si profectus exieris ad principes regis Babylonis,If, having set out, you go to the rulers of the king of Babylon, vivet anima tua, your soul will live,et civitas hæc non succendetur igni:and this city will not be burned with fire.et salvus eris tu, et domus tua.And you and your house will be safe.
Si autem non exieris ad principes regis Babylonis,But if you will not go to the rulers of the king of Babylon, tradetur civitas hæc in manus Chaldæorum, this city will be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans,et succendent eam igni:and they will burn it with fire.et tu non effugies de manu eorum. And you will not escape from their hand.”
Et dixit rex Sedecias ad Jeremiam:And king Zedekiah said to Jeremiah:Sollicitus sum propter Judæos qui transfugerunt ad Chaldæos,“I am anxious, because of the Jews who have crossed over to the Chaldeans,ne forte tradar in manus eorum, lest perhaps I may be delivered into their hands,et illudant mihi.and they may abuse me.”
Respondit autem Jeremias:But Jeremiah responded:Non te tradent.“They will not deliver you.Audi,Listen,quæso,I ask you, vocem Domini,to the voice of the Lord, quam ego loquor ad te,which I am speaking to you,et bene tibi erit, and it will be well with you,et vivet anima tua.and your soul will live.
Quod si nolueris egredi,But if you refuse to depart, iste est sermo quem ostendit mihi Dominus:this is the word that the Lord has revealed to me:
ecce omnes mulieres quæ remanserunt in domo regis Juda educentur ad principes regis Babylonis,Behold,et ipsæ dicent:all the women who remain in the house of the king of Judah will be led away to the rulers of the king of Babylon.Seduxerunt te,And the women will say:et prævaluerunt adversum te,‘Your men of peacefulness have led you astray, viri pacifici tui:and they have prevailed against you.demerserunt in cœno et in lubrico pedes tuos,They have immersed your feet in mud and have set them in a slippery place.et recesserunt a te.And they have withdrawn from you.’
Et omnes uxores tuæAnd all your wives and your sons will be led away to the Chaldeans,et filii tui educentur ad Chaldæos:and you will not escape from their hands.et non effugies manus eorum,Instead, sed in manu regis Babylonis capieris, you will be seized by the hand of the king of Babylon.et civitatem hanc comburet igni. And he will burn this city with fire.”
Dixit ergo Sedecias ad Jeremiam:Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah:Nullus sciat verba hæc,“Let no one know of these words,et non morieris.and you will not die.
Si autem audierint principes quia locutus sum tecum,But if the leaders hear that I have spoken with you,et venerint ad te,and if they come to you,et dixerint tibi:and say to you:Indica nobis quid locutus sis cum rege:‘Tell us what you said to the king.ne celes nos,Do not conceal it from us,et non te interficiemus:and we will not put you to death.et quid locutus est tecum rex:And tell us what the king said to you,’
dices ad eos:then you shall say to them:Prostravi ego preces meas coram rege,‘I presented my supplication before the king,ne me reduci juberet in domum Jonathan,so that he would not order me to be led back to the house of Jonathan,et ibi morerer.to die there.’”
Venerunt ergo omnes principes ad Jeremiam,Then all the leaders came to Jeremiah,et interrogaverunt eum,and they questioned him.et locutus est eis juxta omnia verba quæ præceperat ei rex:And he spoke to them in accord with all the words that the king had commanded him.et cessaverunt ab eo:And they withdrew from him, nihil enim fuerat auditum.for they had learned nothing.
Mansit vero Jeremias in vestibulo carceris usque ad diem quo capta est Jerusalem:Yet truly, Jeremiah remained at the entrance of the prison, until the day when Jerusalem was seized.et factum est ut caperetur Jerusalem. And it happened that Jerusalem was captured.
