Verbum quod factum est per Jeremiam ad omnes Judæos qui habitabant in terra Ægypti,The word that came through Jeremiah to all the Jews who were living in the land of Egypt, habitantes in Magdalo, living at Migdol,et in Taphnis, and at Tahpanhes,et in Memphis, and at Memphis,et in terra Phatures, and in the land of Pathros, dicens:saying:

Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum,“Thus says the Lord of hosts,Deus Israël:the God of Israel:Vos vidistis omne malum istud quod adduxi super Jerusalem,You yourselves have seen all this evil that I have led over Jerusalem and over all the cities of Judah.et super omnes urbes Juda:And behold,et ecce desertæ sunt hodie, they are desolate to this day,et non est in eis habitator, and there is no inhabitant in them,

propter malitiam quam fecerunt ut me ad iracundiam provocarent, because of the wickedness which they have done,et irent ut sacrificarent,so that they provoked me to wrath,et colerent deos alienos quos nesciebant, and because they went to offer sacrifice and worship to strange gods,et illi, which neither they,et vos,nor you,et patres vestri.nor your fathers knew.

Et misi ad vos omnes servos meos prophetas,And I sent to you all my servants, the prophets,de nocte consurgens, rising in the night, mittensque et dicens:and sending, and saying:Nolite facere verbum abominationis hujuscemodi,‘Do not choose to do this abominable word, quam odivi.which I hate.’

Et non audierunt,But they did not listen, nec inclinaverunt aurem suam, nor did they incline their ear,ut converterentur a malis suis,so that they would convert from their evil,et non sacrificarent diis alienis.and so that they would not sacrifice to strange gods.

Et conflata est indignatio mea et furor meus, et succensa est in civitatibus Juda, et in plateis Jerusalem:And so my indignation and my fury was fanned and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem.et versæ sunt in solitudinem et vastitatem secundum diem hanc. And they have been turned into desolation and devastation, just as it is this day.

Et nunc hæc dicit Dominus exercituum,And now,Deus Israël:thus says the Lord of hosts,Quare vos facitis malum grande hoc contra animas vestras, the God of Israel:ut intereat ex vobis virWhy do you commit this great evil against your own souls,et mulier,so that, parvulusamong you,et lactens, man and woman,de medio Judæ,child and infant would pass away from the midst of Judah, nec relinquatur vobis quidquam residuum:and so that no remnant at all would be left behind of you?

provocantes me in operibus manuum vestrarum,For you have provoked me by the works of your hands, sacrificando diis alienis in terra Ægypti,by sacrificing to strange gods in the land of Egypt,in quam ingressi estis ut habitetis ibi:into which you have entered in order to live there,et dispereatis, et sitis in maledictionem et in opprobrium cunctis gentibus terræ?and so that you would perish and become a curse and a disgrace before all the nations of the earth.

Numquid obliti estis mala patrum vestrorum,How could you have forgotten the evils of your fathers,et mala regum Juda, and the evils of the kings of Judah,et mala uxorum ejus, and the evils of their wives,et mala vestra, and your own evils,et mala uxorum vestrarum, and the evils of your own wives,quæ fecerunt in terra Juda, which they have done in the land of Judahet in regionibus Jerusalem?and in the regions of Jerusalem?

Non sunt mundati usque ad diem hanc:They have not been cleansed,et non timuerunt, even to this day.et non ambulaverunt in lege Domini,And they have not feared,et in præceptis meis quæ dedi coram vobisand they have not walked in the law of the Lord and in my precepts,et coram patribus vestris.which I have given before you and before your fathers.

Ideo hæc dicit Dominus exercituum,For this reason, thus says the Lord of hosts,Deus Israël:the God of Israel:Ecce ego ponam faciem meam in vobis in malum:Behold, I will set my face upon you for evil.et disperdam omnem Judam. And I will disperse all of Judah.

Et assumam reliquias Judæ,And I will take the remnant of Judah, qui posuerunt facies suas ut ingrederentur terram Ægypti, who had set their faces so that they would enter into the land of Egypt and live there,et habitarent ibi,and they will all be consumed in the land of Egypt.et consumentur omnes in terra Ægypti:They will fall by the sword and by famine.cadent in gladio,And they will be consumed,et in fame, from the least,et consumentur a minimo usque ad maximum:even to the greatest.in gladio et in fame morientur,By sword and by famine shall they die.et erunt in jusjurandum,And they will be an oath,et in miraculum, and a wonder,et in maledictionem, and a curse,et in opprobrium.and a disgrace.

Et visitabo super habitatores terræ Ægypti sicut visitavi super Jerusalem,And I will visit against those who are living in the land of Egypt, just as I have visited against Jerusalem:in gladio, with the sword,et fame, and with famine,et peste:and with pestilence.

et non erit qui effugiat,And there will be no one who escapes,et sit residuus de reliquiis Judæorum qui vadunt ut peregrinentur in terra Ægypti,of those who remain among the remnant of the Jews,et revertantur in terram Juda, those who have gone to sojourn in the land of Egypt.ad quam ipsi elevant animas suas ut revertantur,And they wish to be returned to the land of Judah,et habitent ibi:for they lift up their souls so that they might return and live there.non revertentur,But there will be no one who may return, nisi qui fugerint.except those who will flee.”

Responderunt autem Jeremiæ omnes viri scientes quod sacrificarent uxores eorum diis alienis,Then all the men, knowing that their wives were sacrificing to strange gods, and all of the women,et universæ mulieres quarum stabat multitudo grandis,a great multitude of whom were standing there,et omnis populus habitantium in terra Ægypti in Phatures, and all of the people who were living in the land of Egypt at Pathros, responded to Jeremiah, dicentes:by saying:

Sermonem quem locutus es ad nos in nomine Domini,“Concerning the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, non audiemus ex te:we will not heed you.

sed facientes faciemus omne verbum quod egredietur de ore nostro,But we will continue to do every word which proceeds from our own mouth,ut sacrificemus reginæ cæli,so that we sacrifice to the queen of heaven,et libemus ei libamina, and we pour out libations to her, sicut fecimus nos et patres nostri, just as we and our fathers have done, reges nostri et principes nostri, our kings and our leaders,in urbibus Juda, et in plateis Jerusalem:in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem.et saturati sumus panibus,For we were filled with bread,et bene nobis erat, and it was well with us,malumque non vidimus.and we saw no evil.

Ex eo autem tempore quo cessavimus sacrificare reginæ cæli,But since the time that we ceased to offer sacrifice to the queen of heaven,et libare ei libamina, and to pour out libations to her, indigemus omnibus,we have been in need of all things,et gladio et fame consumpti sumus.and we have been consumed by the sword and by famine.

Quod si nos sacrificamus reginæ cæli,But when we offer sacrifice to the queen of heavenet libamus ei libamina, and pour out libations to her, numquid sine viris nostris fecimus ei placentas ad colendum eam,do we make cakes for her worshipet libandum ei libamina?and offer libations to her without our husbands?”

Et dixit Jeremias ad omnem populum,And Jeremiah spoke to all the people, adversum viros, facing the men,et adversum mulieres, and facing the women,et adversum universam plebem, qui responderant ei verbum, and facing all the people who had responded this word to him, dicens:saying:

Numquid non sacrificium quod sacrificastis in civitatibus Juda, et in plateis Jerusalem,“Was this not the sacrifice that you offered in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, vos et patres vestri, reges vestri, you and your fathers, your kings and your leaders,et principes vestri, and the people of the land,et populus terræ, horum recordatus est Dominus, et ascendit super cor ejus?which has been called to mind by the Lord and which has entered into his heart?

Et non poterat Dominus ultra portare propter malitiam studiorum vestrorum,And the Lord could no longer bear this, because of the evil of your intentions,et propter abominationes quas fecistis:and because of the abominations that you have done.et facta est terra vestra in desolationem,And so, your land has become a desolation,et in stuporem, et in maledictum, and an astonishment, and a curse,eo quod non sit habitator, and it is without an inhabitant, sicut est dies hæc.even to this day.

Propterea quod sacrificaveritis idolis,This is because you have sacrificed to idols,et peccaveritis Domino, and you have sinned against the Lord.et non audieritis vocem Domini,And you have not heeded the voice of the Lord,et in lege, and you have not walked in his law,et in præceptis, and in his precepts,et in testimoniis ejus non ambulaveritis, and in his testimonies.idcirco evenerunt vobis mala hæc,It is for this reason that these evils have happened to you, sicut est dies hæc.just as it is today.”

Dixit autem Jeremias ad omnem populum,Then Jeremiah said to all the peopleet ad universas mulieres:and to all the women:Audite verbum Domini,“Listen to the word of the Lord, omnis Juda qui estis in terra Ægypti.all you of Judah who are in the land of Egypt:

Hæc inquit Dominus exercituum,Thus says the Lord of hosts,Deus Israël, dicens:the God of Israel, saying:Vos et uxores vestræ locuti estis ore vestro,You and your wives have spoken it with your mouth,et manibus vestris implestis, dicentes:and have fulfilled it with your hands, saying:Faciamus vota nostra quæ vovimus,‘Let us perform our vows that we have made,ut sacrificemus reginæ cæli,so that we may offer sacrifice to the queen of heaven,et libemus ei libamina.and pour out libations to her.’Implestis vota vestra, et opere perpetrastis ea.You have fulfilled your vows and accomplished their works.

Ideo audite verbum Domini,Because of this, listen to the word of the Lord, omnis Juda qui habitatis in terra Ægypti:all you of Judah, who live in the land of Egypt:Ecce ego juravi in nomine meo magno,Behold, I have sworn by my great name, ait Dominus, says the Lord, quia nequaquam ultra vocabitur nomen meum ex ore omnis viri Judæi, dicentis: Vivit Dominus Deus, that my name will never again be invoked by the mouth of any man of Judah in the land of Egypt,in omni terra Ægypti.saying: ‘As the Lord God lives.’

Ecce ego vigilabo super eos in malum,Behold, I will be vigilant over them for harm,et non in bonum:and not for good.et consumentur omnes viri Juda qui sunt in terra Ægypti gladio et fame,And all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt will be consumed, by the sword and by famine, donec penitus consumantur.until they are thoroughly consumed.

Et qui fugerint gladium,And a few men, who will flee from the sword, revertentur de terra Ægypti in terram Juda viri pauci:will return from the land of Egypt into the land of Judah.et scient omnes reliquiæ Juda,And all the remnant of Judah, ingredientium terram Ægypti ut habitent ibi,who had entered into the land of Egypt so as to live there, cujus sermo compleatur, meus an illorum.will know whose word will be completed, mine or theirs.

Et hoc vobis signum,And this will be a sign to you,ait Dominus, says the Lord, quod visitem ego super vos in loco isto, that I will visit against you in this place,ut sciatis quia vere complebuntur sermones mei contra vos in malum:so that truly you may know that my words will be completed against you for harm.”

hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord: “Behold,Ecce ego tradam Pharaonem Ephree regem Ægypti in manu inimicorum ejus,I will deliver Pharaoh Hophra, the king of Egypt, into the hand of his enemies,et in manu quærentium animam illius, and into the hand of those who are seeking his life, sicut tradidi Sedeciam regem Juda in manu Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis inimici sui, just as I delivered Zedekiah, the king of Judah, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar,et quærentis animam ejus.the king of Babylon, his enemy and the one who was seeking his life.”
