In principio erat Verbum,In the beginning was the Word,et Verbum erat apud Deum, and the Word was with God,et Deus erat Verbum.and God was the Word.

Hoc erat in principio apud Deum.He was with God in the beginning.

Omnia per ipsum facta sunt:All things were made through Him,et sine ipso factum est nihil, quod factum est.and nothing that was made was made without Him.

In ipso vita erat,Life was in Him,et vita erat lux hominum:and Life was the light of men.

et lux in tenebris lucet,And the light shines in the darkness,et tenebræ eam non comprehenderunt.and the darkness did not comprehend it.

Fuit homo missus a Deo,There was a man sent by God,cui nomen erat Joannes.whose name was John.

Hic venit in testimonium ut testimonium perhiberet de lumine,He arrived as a witness to offer testimony about the Light,ut omnes crederent per illum.so that all would believe through him.

Non erat ille lux,He was not the Light, sed ut testimonium perhiberet de lumine.but he was to offer testimony about the Light.

Erat lux vera,The true Light,quæ illuminat omnem hominem venientem in hunc mundum.which illuminates every man, was coming into this world.

In mundo erat,He was in the world,et mundus per ipsum factus est,and the world was made through him,et mundus eum non cognovit.and the world did not recognize him.

In propria venit,He went to his own,et sui eum non receperunt.and his own did not accept him.

Quotquot autem receperunt eum,Yet whoever did accept him, dedit eis potestatem filios Dei fieri, those who believed in his name, his qui credunt in nomine ejus:he gave them the power to become the sons of God.

qui non ex sanguinibus,These are born, not of blood, neque ex voluntate carnis, nor of the will of flesh, neque ex voluntate viri, sed ex Deo nati sunt.nor of the will of man, but of God.

Et Verbum caro factum est,And the Word became flesh,et habitavit in nobis:and he lived among us,et vidimus gloriam ejus, and we saw his glory, gloriam quasi unigeniti a Patre plenum gratiæglory like that of an only-begotten Son from the Father,et veritatis.full of grace and truth.

Joannes testimonium perhibet de ipso,John offers testimony about him, and he cries out,et clamat dicens: Hic erat quem dixi:saying: “This is the one about whom I said:Qui post me venturus est,‘He who is to come after me,ante me factus est:has been placed ahead of me,quia prior me erat.because he existed before me.’”

Et de plenitudine ejus nos omnes accepimus,And from his fullness, we all have received,et gratiam pro gratia:even grace for grace.

quia lex per Moysen data est,For the law was given through Moses, gratia et veritas per Jesum Christum facta est.but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Deum nemo vidit umquam:No one ever saw God;unigenitus Filius, the only-begotten Son,qui est in sinu Patris, who is in the bosom of the Father, ipse enarravit.he himself has described him.

Et hoc est testimonium Joannis,And this is the testimony of John, quando miserunt Judæi ab Jerosolymis sacerdoteswhen the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to him,et Levitas ad eum ut interrogarent eum:so that they might ask him,Tu quis es?“Who are you?”

Et confessus est,And he confessed itet non negavit, and did not deny it;et confessus est:and what he confessed was:Quia non sum ego Christus.“I am not the Christ.”

Et interrogaverunt eum:And they questioned him:Quid ergo?“Then what are you?Elias es tu?Are you Elijah?”Et dixit:And he said,Non sum.“I am not.”Propheta es tu?“Are you the Prophet?”Et respondit:And he answered,Non.“No.”

Dixerunt ergo ei:Therefore, they said to him:Quis es ut responsum demus his qui miserunt nos?“Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us?quid dicis de teipso? What do you say about yourself?”

Ait:He said,Ego vox clamantis in deserto:“I am a voice crying out in the desert,Dirigite viam Domini,‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’sicut dixit Isaias propheta.just as the prophet Isaiah said.”

Et qui missi fuerant, erant ex pharisæis.And some of those who had been sent were from among the Pharisees.

Et interrogaverunt eum,And they questioned himet dixerunt ei:and said to him,Quid ergo baptizas,“Then why do you baptize,si tu non es Christus,if you are not the Christ, neque Elias, and not Elijah, neque propheta?and not the Prophet?”

Respondit eis Joannes, dicens:John answered them by saying:Ego baptizo in aqua:“I baptize with water.medius autem vestrum stetit,But in your midst stands one, quem vos nescitis.whom you do not know.

Ipse est qui post me venturus est,The same is he who is to come after me,qui ante me factus est:who has been placed ahead of me,cujus ego non sum dignus ut solvam ejus corrigiam calceamenti.the laces of whose shoes I am not worthy to loosen.”

Hæc in Bethania facta sunt trans Jordanem,These things happened in Bethania, across the Jordan, ubi erat Joannes baptizans.where John was baptizing.

Altera die vidit Joannes Jesum venientem ad se,On the next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him, and so he said:et ait:“Behold,Ecce agnus Dei,the Lamb of God. Behold, ecce qui tollit peccatum mundi.he who takes away the sin of the world.

Hic est de quo dixi:This is the one about whom I said,Post me venit vir qui ante me factus est:‘After me arrives a man, who has been placed ahead of me,quia prior me erat:because he existed before me.’

et ego nesciebam eum,And I did not know him.sed ut manifestetur in Israël,Yet it is for this reason that I come baptizing with water:propterea veni ego in aqua baptizans.so that he may be made manifest in Israel.”

Et testimonium perhibuit Joannes,And John offered testimony, dicens:saying:Quia vidi Spiritum descendentem quasi columbam de cælo,“For I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove;et mansit super eum.and he remained upon him.

Et ego nesciebam eum:And I did not know him.sed qui misit me baptizare in aqua, ille mihi dixit:But he who sent me to baptize with water said to me:Super quem videris Spiritum descendentem, et manentem super eum,‘He over whom you will see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him,hic est qui baptizat in Spiritu Sancto.this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

Et ego vidi:And I saw,et testimonium perhibui quia hic est Filius Dei.and I gave testimony: that this one is the Son of God.”

Altera die iterum stabat Joannes,The next day again,et ex discipulis ejus duo.John was standing with two of his disciples.

Et respiciens Jesum ambulantem,And catching sight of Jesus walking, he said, dicit:“Behold,Ecce agnus Dei.the Lamb of God.”

Et audierunt eum duo discipuli loquentem,And two disciples were listening to him speaking.et secuti sunt Jesum. And they followed Jesus.

Conversus autem Jesus, et videns eos sequentes se,Then Jesus, turning around and seeing them following him, dicit eis:said to them,Quid quæritis?“What are you seeking?”Qui dixerunt ei:And they said to him,Rabbi (quod dicitur interpretatum Magister),“Rabbi (which means in translation, Teacher),ubi habitas?where do you live?”

Dicit eis: Venite et videte. He said to them, “Come and see.”Venerunt, et viderunt ubi maneret,They went and saw where he was staying,et apud eum manserunt die illo:and they stayed with him that day.hora autem erat quasi decima. Now it was about the tenth hour.

Erat autem Andreas,And Andrew, frater Simonis Petri, the brother of Simon Peter, unus ex duobus qui audierant a Joanne, was one of the two who had heard about him from Johnet secuti fuerant eum.and had followed him.

Invenit hic primum fratrem suum Simonem,First, he found his brother Simon, and he said to him,et dicit ei: Invenimus Messiam (quod est interpretatum Christus).“We have found the Messiah,” (which is translated as the Christ).

Et adduxit eum ad Jesum. And he led him to Jesus.Intuitus autem eum Jesus,And Jesus, gazing at him, dixit: Tu es Simon, said: “You are Simon, filius Jona;son of Jonah.tu vocaberis Cephas,You shall be called Cephas,”quod interpretatur Petrus.(which is translated as Peter).

In crastinum voluit exire in Galilæam,On the next day, he wanted to go into Galilee,et invenit Philippum.and he found Philip.Et dicit ei Jesus:And Jesus said to him,Sequere me.“Follow me.”

Erat autem Philippus a Bethsaida,Now Philip was from Bethsaida, civitate Andreæ et Petri.the city of Andrew and Peter.

Invenit Philippus Nathanaël,Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him,et dicit ei: Quem scripsit Moyses in lege, et prophetæ,“We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the Law and the Prophets:invenimus Jesum filium Joseph a Nazareth.Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”

Et dixit ei Nathanaël:And Nathanael said to him,A Nazareth potest aliquid boni esse?“Can anything good be from Nazareth?”Dicit ei Philippus:Philip said to him,Veni et vide.“Come and see.”

Vidit Jesus Nathanaël venientem ad se,Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him,et dicit de eo:and he said about him,Ecce vere Israëlita,“Behold,in quo dolus non est.an Israelite in whom truly there is no deceit.”

Dicit ei Nathanaël:Nathanael said to him,Unde me nosti?“From where do you know me?”Respondit Jesus,Jesus respondedet dixit ei:and said to him,Priusquam te Philippus vocavit,“Before Philip called you,cum esses sub ficu, when you were under the fig tree, vidi te.I saw you.”

Respondit ei Nathanaël,Nathanael answered himet ait:and said:Rabbi,“Rabbi,tu es Filius Dei,you are the Son of God.tu es rex Israël.You are the King of Israel.”

Respondit Jesus,Jesus respondedet dixit ei:and said to him:Quia dixi tibi:“Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree,Vidi te sub ficu, you believe.credis;Greater things than these, majus his videbis.you will see.”

Et dicit ei:And he said to him,Amen,“Amen, amen dico vobis, amen, videbitis cælum apertum,I say to you,et angelos Dei ascendentes, you will see heaven opened,et descendentes supra Filium hominis.and the Angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of man.”
