Una autem sabbati valde diluculo venerunt ad monumentum, portantes quæ paraverant aromata:Then, on the first Sabbath, at very first light, they went to the tomb, carrying the aromatic spices that they had prepared.
et invenerunt lapidem revolutum a monumento. And they found the stone rolled back from the tomb.
Et ingressæ non invenerunt corpus Domini Jesu. And upon entering, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
Et factum est,And it happened that, dum mente consternatæ essent de isto, while their minds were still confused about this, ecce duo viri steterunt secus illas in veste fulgenti.behold, two men stood beside them, in shining apparel.
Cum timerent autem,Then,et declinarent vultum in terram, since they were afraid and were turning their faces toward the ground, dixerunt ad illas:these two said to them:Quid quæritis viventem cum mortuis?“Why do you seek the living with the dead?
non est hic,He is not here, sed surrexit:for he has risen.recordamini qualiter locutus est vobis,Recall how he spoke to you,cum adhuc in Galilæa esset, when he was still in Galilee,
dicens:saying:Quia oportet Filium hominis tradi in manus hominum peccatorum,‘For the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men,et crucifigi, and be crucified,et die tertia resurgere.and on the third day rise again.’”
Et recordatæ sunt verborum ejus. And they called to mind his words.
Et regressæ a monumento nuntiaverunt hæc omnia illis undecim,And returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven,et ceteris omnibus.and to all the others.
Erat autem Maria Magdalene,Now it was Mary Magdalene,et Joanna, and Joanna,et Maria Jacobi, and Mary of James,et ceteræ quæ cum eis erant, and the other women who were with them,quæ dicebant ad apostolos hæc.who told these things to the Apostles.
Et visa sunt ante illos sicut deliramentum verba ista,But these words seemed to them a delusion.et non crediderunt illis. And so they did not believe them.
Petrus autem surgens cucurrit ad monumentum:But Peter, rising up, ran to the tomb.et procumbens vidit linteamina sola posita,And stooping down, he saw the linen cloths positioned alone,et abiit secum mirans quod factum fuerat.and he went away wondering to himself about what had happened.
Et ecce duo ex illis ibant ipsa die in castellum,And behold, two of them went out, on the same day, quod erat in spatio stadiorum sexaginta ab Jerusalem, nomine Emmaus.to a town named Emmaus, which was the distance of sixty stadia from Jerusalem.
Et ipsi loquebantur ad invicem de his omnibus quæ acciderant. And they spoke to one another about all of these things that had occurred.
Et factum est,And it happened that, dum fabularentur, et secum quærerent:while they were speculating and questioning within themselves,et ipse Jesus appropinquans ibat cum illis:Jesus himself, drawing near, traveled with them.
oculi autem illorum tenebantur ne eum agnoscerent. But their eyes were restrained, so that they would not recognize him.
Et ait ad illos:And he said to them,Qui sunt hi sermones,“What are these words, quos confertis ad invicem ambulantes, which you are discussing with one another,et estis tristes?as you walk and are sad?”
Et respondens unus,And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, cui nomen Cleophas, responded by saying to him, dixit ei: Tu solus peregrinus es in Jerusalem, et non cognovisti quæ facta sunt in illa his diebus?“Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
Quibus ille dixit: Quæ?And he said to them, “What things?”Et dixerunt:And they said,De Jesu Nazareno,“About Jesus of Nazareth, qui fuit vir propheta, who was a noble prophet, potens in opere et sermone coram Deo et omni populo:powerful in works and in words, before God and all the people.
et quomodo eum tradiderunt summi sacerdotes et principes nostri in damnationem mortis,And how our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death.et crucifixerunt eum:And they crucified him.
nos autem sperabamus quia ipse esset redempturus Israël:But we were hoping that he would be the Redeemer of Israel.et nunc super hæc omnia,And now, on top of all this, tertia dies est hodie quod hæc facta sunt.today is the third day since these things have happened.
Sed et mulieres quædam ex nostris terruerunt nos,Then, too, certain women from among us terrified us.quæ ante lucem fuerunt ad monumentum,For before daytime, they were at the tomb,
et non invento corpore ejus, and, having not found his body, venerunt, they returned, dicentes se etiam visionem angelorum vidisse, saying that they had even seen a vision of Angels, qui dicunt eum vivere.who said that he is alive.
Et abierunt quidam ex nostris ad monumentum:And some of us went out to the tomb.et ita invenerunt sicut mulieres dixerunt,And they found it just as the women had said.ipsum vero non invenerunt. But truly, they did not find him.”
Et ipse dixit ad eos:And he said to them:O stulti,“How foolish and reluctant in heart you are,et tardi corde ad credendum in omnibus quæ locuti sunt prophetæ!to believe everything that has been spoken by the Prophets!
Nonne hæc oportuit pati Christum,Was not the Christ required to suffer these things,et ita intrare in gloriam suam?and so enter into his glory?”
Et incipiens a Moyse, et omnibus prophetis,And beginning from Moses and all the Prophets, interpretabatur illis in omnibus scripturis quæ de ipso erant.he interpreted for them, in all the Scriptures, the things that were about him.
Et appropinquaverunt castello quo ibant:And they drew near to the town where they were going.et ipse se finxit longius ire.And he conducted himself so as to go on further.
Et coëgerunt illum,But they were insistent with him, dicentes:saying,Mane nobiscum,“Remain with us,quoniam advesperascit, because it is toward eveninget inclinata est jam dies.and now daylight is declining.”Et intravit cum illis. And so he entered with them.
Et factum est,And it happened that, dum recumberet cum eis, while he was at table with them, accepit panem,he took bread,et benedixit, and he blessedac fregit, and broke it,et porrigebat illis.and he extended it to them.
Et aperti sunt oculi eorum,And their eyes were opened,et cognoverunt eum:and they recognized him.et ipse evanuit ex oculis eorum. And he vanished from their eyes.
Et dixerunt ad invicem:And they said to one another,Nonne cor nostrum ardens erat in nobis dum loqueretur in via,“Was not our heart burning within us, while he was speaking on the way,et aperiret nobis Scripturas?and when he opened the Scriptures to us?”
Et surgentes eadem hora regressi sunt in Jerusalem:And rising up at that same hour, they returned to Jerusalem.et invenerunt congregatos undecim,And they found the eleven gathered together,et eos qui cum illis erant, and those who were with them,
dicentes:saying:Quod surrexit Dominus vere,“In truth, the Lord has risen,et apparuit Simoni.and he has appeared to Simon.”
Et ipsi narrabant quæ gesta erant in via,And they explained the things that were done on the way,et quomodo cognoverunt eum in fractione panis.and how they had recognized him at the breaking of the bread.
Dum autem hæc loquuntur,Then, while they were talking about these things, stetit Jesus in medio eorum,Jesus stood in their midst,et dicit eis:And he said to them:Pax vobis: ego sum,“Peace be with you. It is I.nolite timere.Do not be afraid.”
Conturbati veroYet truly,et conterriti, they were very disturbed and terrified, existimabant se spiritum videre.supposing that they saw a spirit.
Et dixit eis:And he said to them:Quid turbati estis,“Why are you disturbed,et cogitationes ascendunt in corda vestra?and why do these thoughts rise up in your hearts?
videte manus meas, et pedes,See my hands and feet, quia ego ipse sum;that it is I myself.palpate et videte,Look and touch.quia spiritus carnem et ossa non habet,For a spirit does not have flesh and bones, sicut me videtis habere.as you see that I have.”
Et cum hoc dixisset,And when he had said this, ostendit eis manus et pedes.he showed them his hands and feet.
Adhuc autem illis non credentibus,Then,et mirantibus præ gaudio, while they were still in disbelief and in wonder out of joy, dixit:he said,Habetis hic aliquid quod manducetur?“Do you have anything here to eat?”
At illi obtulerunt ei partem piscis assi et favum mellis. And they offered him a piece of roasted fish and a honeycomb.
Et cum manducasset coram eis,And when he had eaten these in their sight, sumens reliquias dedit eis.taking up what was left, he gave it to them.
Et dixit ad eos:And he said to them:Hæc sunt verba quæ locutus sum ad vos cum adhuc essem vobiscum,“These are the words that I spoke to you when I was still with you, quoniam necesse est impleri omnia quæ scripta sunt in lege Moysi, because all things must be fulfilled which are written in the law of Moses,et prophetis, and in the Prophets,et Psalmis de me.and in the Psalms about me.”
Tunc aperuit illis sensum ut intelligerent Scripturas,Then he opened their mind, so that they might understand the Scriptures.
et dixit eis:And he said to them:Quoniam sic scriptum est,“For so it is written,et sic oportebat Christum pati, and so it was necessary,et resurgere a mortuis tertia die:for the Christ to suffer and to rise up from the dead on the third day,
et prædicari in nomine ejus pœnitentiam, et remissionem peccatorum in omnes gentes, incipientibus ab Jerosolyma.and, in his name, for repentance and the remission of sins to be preached, among all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
Vos autem testes estis horum. And you are witnesses of these things.
Et ego mitto promissum Patris mei in vos;And I am sending the Promise of my Father upon you.vos autem sedete in civitate,But you must stay in the city, quoadusque induamini virtute ex alto.until such time as you are clothed with power from on high.”
Eduxit autem eos foras in Bethaniam,Then he led them out as far as Bethania.et elevatis manibus suis benedixit eis.And lifting up his hands, he blessed them.
Et factum est,And it happened that, dum benediceret illis, while he was blessing them, recessit ab eis,he withdrew from them,et ferebatur in cælum.and he was carried up into heaven.
Et ipsi adorantes regressi sunt in Jerusalem cum gaudio magno:And worshiping, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
et erant semper in templo,And they were always in the temple, laudantes et benedicentes Deum.praising and blessing God.Amen.Amen.
