Hæc cum dixisset Jesus,When Jesus had said these things, egressus est cum discipulis suis trans torrentem Cedron, ubi erat hortus,he departed with his disciples across the Torrent of Kidron, where there was a garden,in quem introivit ipse, et discipuli ejus.into which he entered with his disciples.

Sciebat autem et Judas,But Judas, qui tradebat eum,who betrayed him, locum:also knew the place, quia frequenter Jesus convenerat illuc cum discipulis suis.for Jesus had frequently met with his disciples there.

Judas ergo cum accepisset cohortem, et a pontificibus et pharisæis ministros,Then Judas, when he had received a cohort from both the high priests and the attendants of the Pharisees, venit illuc cum laternis, et facibus, et armis.approached the place with lanterns and torches and weapons.

Jesus itaque sciens omnia quæ ventura erant super eum,And so Jesus, processit, knowing all that was about to happen to him,et dixit eis:advanced and said to them,Quem quæritis?“Who are you seeking?”

Responderunt ei:They answered him,Jesum Nazarenum.“Jesus the Nazarene.”Dicit eis Jesus:Jesus said to them,Ego sum.“I am he.”Stabat autem et Judas,Now Judas,qui tradebat eum,who betrayed him,cum ipsis.was also standing with them.

Ut ergo dixit eis:Then,Ego sum:when he said to them, abierunt retrorsum,“I am he,”et ceciderunt in terram.they moved back and fell to the ground.

Iterum ergo interrogavit eos:Then again he questioned them:Quem quæritis?“Who are you seeking?”Illi autem dixerunt:And they said,Jesum Nazarenum.“Jesus the Nazarene.”

Respondit Jesus:Jesus responded:Dixi vobis,“I told you that I am he.quia ego sum:Therefore,si ergo me quæritis,if you are seeking me,sinite hos abire.permit these others to go away.”

Ut impleretur sermo,This was so that the word might be fulfilled, quem dixit:which he said,Quia quos dedisti mihi,“Of those whom you have given to me,non perdidi ex eis quemquam.I have not lost any of them.”

Simon ergo Petrus habens gladium eduxit eum:Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it,et percussit pontificis servum, et abscidit auriculam ejus dexteram.and he struck the servant of the high priest, and he cut off his right ear.Erat autem nomen servo Malchus. Now the name of the servant was Malchus.

Dixit ergo Jesus Petro:Therefore, Jesus said to Peter:Mitte gladium tuum in vaginam.“Set your sword into the scabbard.Calicem, quem dedit mihi Pater, non bibam illum?Should I not drink the chalice which my Father has given to me?”

Cohors ergo,Then the cohort,et tribunus, and the tribune,et ministri Judæorum comprehenderunt Jesum, and the attendants of the Jews apprehended Jesuset ligaverunt eum.and bound him.

Et adduxerunt eum ad Annam primum:And they led him away, first to Annas, erat enim socer Caiphæ,for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, qui erat pontifex anni illius.who was the high priest that year.

Erat autem Caiphas, qui consilium dederat Judæis: Quia expedit unum hominem mori pro populo. Now Caiaphas was the one who had given counsel to the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die for the people.

Sequebatur autem Jesum Simon Petrus, et alius discipulus. And Simon Peter was following Jesus with another disciple.Discipulus autem ille erat notus pontifici,And that disciple was known to the high priest,et introivit cum Jesu in atrium pontificis.and so he entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest.

Petrus autem stabat ad ostium foris. But Peter was standing outside at the entrance.Exivit ergo discipulus alius,Therefore, the other disciple, qui erat notus pontifici, who was known to the high priest,et dixit ostiariæ: et introduxit Petrum.went out and spoke to the woman who was the doorkeeper, and he led in Peter.

Dicit ergo Petro ancilla ostiaria:Therefore,Numquidthe woman servant keeping the door said to Peter,et tu ex discipulis es hominis istius?“Are you not also among the disciples of this man?”Dicit ille:He said,Non sum.“I am not.”

Stabant autem servi et ministri ad prunas,Now the servants and attendants were standing before burning coals, quia frigus erat, for it was cold,et calefaciebant se:and they were warming themselves.erat autem cum eis et Petrus stans,And Peter was standing with them also,et calefaciens se.warming himself.

Pontifex ergo interrogavit Jesum de discipulis suis,Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his discipleset de doctrina ejus.and about his doctrine.

Respondit ei Jesus:Jesus responded to him:Ego palam locutus sum mundo:“I have spoken openly to the world.ego semper docui in synagoga,I have always taught in the synagogueet in templo, and in the temple, quo omnes Judæi conveniunt, where all the Jews meet.et in occulto locutus sum nihil. And I have said nothing in secret.

Quid me interrogas? Why do you question me?interroga eos qui audierunt quid locutus sim ipsis:Question those who heard what I said to them. Behold, ecce hi sciunt quæ dixerim ego.they know these things that I have said.”

Hæc autem cum dixisset,Then, when he had said this, unus assistens ministrorum dedit alapam Jesu, one of the attendants standing nearby struck Jesus, saying:dicens: Sic respondes pontifici?“Is this the way you answer the high priest?”

Respondit ei Jesus:Jesus answered him:Si male locutus sum,“If I have spoken wrongly, testimonium perhibe de malo:offer testimony about the wrong.si autem bene,But if I have spoken correctly, quid me cædis?then why do you strike me?”

Et misit eum Annas ligatum ad Caipham pontificem. And Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.

Erat autem Simon Petrus stans,Now Simon Peter was standinget calefaciens se.and warming himself.Dixerunt ergo ei:Then they said to him,Numquid et tu ex discipulis ejus es?“Are you not also one of his disciples?”Negavit ille,He denied itet dixit:and said,Non sum.“I am not.”

Dicit ei unus ex servis pontificis, cognatus ejus, cujus abscidit Petrus auriculam:One of the servants of the high priest (a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off) said to him,Nonne ego te vidi in horto cum illo?“Did I not see you in the garden with him?”

Iterum ergo negavit Petrus:Therefore, again, Peter denied it.et statim gallus cantavit. And immediately the rooster crowed.

Adducunt ergo Jesum a Caipha in prætorium. Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the praetorium.Erat autem mane:Now it was morning,et ipsi non introierunt in prætorium, and so they did not enter into the praetorium,ut non contaminarentur,so that they would not be defiled, sed ut manducarent Pascha.but might eat the Passover.

Exivit ergo Pilatus ad eos foras,Therefore, Pilate went outside to them,et dixit:and he said,Quam accusationem affertis adversus hominem hunc?“What accusation are you bringing against this man?”

Responderunt,They respondedet dixerunt ei:and said to him,Si non esset hic malefactor,“If he were not an evil-doer,non tibi tradidissemus eum.we would not have handed him over to you.”

Dixit ergo eis Pilatus:Therefore,Accipite eum vos,Pilate said to them,et secundum legem vestram judicate eum.“Take him yourselves and judge him according to your own law.”Dixerunt ergo ei Judæi:Then the Jews said to him,Nobis non licet interficere quemquam.“It is not lawful for us to execute anyone.”

Ut sermo Jesu impleretur, quem dixit,This was so that the word of Jesus would be fulfilled, significans qua morte esset moriturus.which he spoke signifying what kind of death he would die.

Introivit ergo iterum in prætorium Pilatus:Then Pilate entered the praetorium again,et vocavit Jesum, and he called Jesuset dixit ei:and said to him,Tu es rex Judæorum?“You are the king of the Jews?”

Respondit Jesus:Jesus responded,A temetipso hoc dicis,“Are you saying this of yourself,an alii dixerunt tibi de me?or have others spoken to you about me?”

Respondit Pilatus:Pilate responded:Numquid ego Judæus sum?“Am I a Jew?gens tua et pontifices tradiderunt te mihi:Your own nation and the high priests have handed you over to me.quid fecisti? What have you done?”

Respondit Jesus:Jesus responded:Regnum meum non est de hoc mundo.“My kingdom is not of this world.Si ex hoc mundo esset regnum meum,If my kingdom were of this world, ministri mei utique decertarent ut non traderer Judæis:my ministers would certainly strive so that I would not be handed over to the Jews.nunc autem regnum meum non est hinc. But my kingdom is not now from here.”

Dixit itaque ei Pilatus:And so Pilate said to him,Ergo rex es tu?“You are a king,Respondit Jesus:then?”Tu dicis quia rex sum ego.Jesus answered,Ego in hoc natus sum,“You are saying that I am a king.et ad hoc veni in mundum,For this I was born,ut testimonium perhibeam veritati:and for this I came into the world:omnis qui est ex veritate,so that I may offer testimony to the truth.audit vocem meam.Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.”

Dicit ei Pilatus:Pilate said to him,Quid est veritas?“What is truth?”Et cum hoc dixisset,And when he had said this, iterum exivit ad Judæos,he went out again to the Jews,et dicit eis:and he said to them,Ego nullam invenio in eo causam.“I find no case against him.

Est autem consuetudo vobis ut unum dimittam vobis in Pascha:But you have a custom, that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore, vultis ergo dimittam vobis regem Judæorum?do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”

Clamaverunt ergo rursum omnes,Then they all cried out repeatedly, dicentes:saying:Non hunc,“Not this one,sed Barabbam.but Barabbas.”Erat autem Barabbas latro. Now Barabbas was a robber.
