Erat autem homo ex pharisæis,Now there was a man among the Pharisees,Nicodemus nomine, named Nicodemus, princeps Judæorum.a leader of the Jews.

Hic venit ad Jesum nocte,He went to Jesus at night,et dixit ei:and he said to him:Rabbi,“Rabbi, scimus quia a Deo venisti magister,we know that you have arrived as a teacher from God.nemo enim potest hæc signa facere,For no one would be able to accomplish these signs,quæ tu facis, which you accomplish, nisi fuerit Deus cum eo.unless God were with him.”

Respondit Jesus,Jesus responded and said to him,et dixit ei:“Amen,Amen, amen, amen dico tibi,I say to you, nisi quis renatus fuerit denuo, unless one has been reborn anew, non potest videre regnum Dei.he is not able to see the kingdom of God.”

Dicit ad eum Nicodemus:Nicodemus said to him:Quomodo potest homo nasci,“How could a man be born when he is old?cum sit senex?Surely, numquid potest in ventrem matris suæ iterato introire et renasci?he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be reborn?”

Respondit Jesus:Jesus responded:Amen,“Amen, amen dico tibi, amen, nisi quis renatus fuerit ex aqua,I say to you,et Spiritu Sancto, unless one has been reborn by water and the Holy Spirit, non potest introire in regnum Dei.he is not able to enter into the kingdom of God.

Quod natum est ex carne, caro est:What is born of the flesh is flesh,et quod natum est ex spiritu, spiritus est.and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Non mireris quia dixi tibi:You should not be amazed that I said to you:oportet vos nasci denuo. You must be born anew.

Spiritus ubi vult spirat,The Spirit inspires where he wills.et vocem ejus audis,And you hear his voice, sed nescis unde veniat, but you do not know where he comes from, aut quo vadat:or where he is going.sic est omnis qui natus est ex spiritu. So it is with all who are born of the Spirit.”

Respondit Nicodemus,Nicodemus respondedet dixit ei:and said to him,Quomodo possunt hæc fieri?“How are these things able to be accomplished?”

Respondit Jesus,Jesus respondedet dixit ei:and said to him:Tu es magister in Israël,“You are a teacher in Israel,et hæc ignoras?and you are ignorant of these things?

Amen,Amen, amen dico tibi, amen, I say to you, quia quod scimus loquimur, that we speak about what we know,et quod vidimus testamur, et testimonium nostrum non accipitis.and we testify about what we have seen. But you do not accept our testimony.

Si terrena dixi vobis,If I have spoken to you about earthly things,et non creditis: quomodo, and you have not believed, then how will you believe,si dixero vobis cælestia, credetis?if I will speak to you about heavenly things?

Et nemo ascendit in cælum,And no one has ascended to heaven, nisi qui descendit de cælo,except the one who descended from heaven:Filius hominis, qui est in cælo.the Son of man who is in heaven.

Et sicut Moyses exaltavit serpentem in deserto,And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, ita exaltari oportet Filium hominis:so also must the Son of man be lifted up,

ut omnis qui credit in ipsum, non pereat,so that whoever believes in him may not perish, sed habeat vitam æternam.but may have eternal life.

Sic enim Deus dilexit mundum, ut Filium suum unigenitum daret:For God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son,ut omnis qui credit in eum, non pereat,so that all who believe in him may not perish, sed habeat vitam æternam.but may have eternal life.

Non enim misit Deus Filium suum in mundum,For God did not send his Son into the world,ut judicet mundum,in order to judge the world, sed ut salvetur mundus per ipsum.but in order that the world may be saved through him.

Qui credit in eum, non judicatur;Whoever believes in him is not judged.qui autem non credit, jam judicatus est:But whoever does not believe is already judged, quia non credit in nomine unigeniti Filii Dei.because he does not believe in the name of the only-begotten Son of God.

Hoc est autem judicium:And this is the judgment:quia lux venit in mundum, that the Light has come into the world,et dilexerunt homines magis tenebras quam lucem:and men loved darkness more than light.erant enim eorum mala opera. For their works were evil.

Omnis enim qui male agit, odit lucem, et non venit ad lucem,For everyone who does evil hates the Light and does not go toward the Light,ut non arguantur opera ejus:so that his works may not be corrected.

qui autem facit veritatem, venit ad lucem,But whoever acts in truth goes toward the Light,ut manifestentur opera ejus,so that his works may be manifested, quia in Deo sunt facta.because they have been accomplished in God.”

Post hæc venit Jesus et discipuli ejus in terram Judæam:After these things,et illic demorabatur cum eis,Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judea.et baptizabat. And he was living there with them and baptizing.

Erat autem et Joannes baptizans,Now John was also baptizing,in Ænnon,at Aenon near Salim, juxta Salim:because there was much water in that place.quia aquæ multæ erant illic,And they were arrivinget veniebant et baptizabantur.and being baptized.

Nondum enim missus fuerat Joannes in carcerem. For John had not yet been cast into prison.

Facta est autem quæstio ex discipulis Joannis cum Judæis de purificatione. Then a dispute occurred between the disciples of John and the Jews, about purification.

Et venerunt ad Joannem, et dixerunt ei:And they went to John and said to him: “Rabbi,Rabbi, qui erat tecum trans Jordanem, the one who was with you across the Jordan, cui tu testimonium perhibuisti, about whom you offered testimony:ecce hic baptizat, et omnes veniunt ad eum.behold, he is baptizing and everyone is going to him.”

Respondit Joannes,John respondedet dixit:and said:Non potest homo accipere quidquam,“A man is not able to receive anything, nisi fuerit ei datum de cælo.unless it has been given to him from heaven.

Ipsi vos mihi testimonium perhibetis, quod dixerim:You yourselves offer testimony for me that I said,Non sum ego Christus:‘I am not the Christ,’sed quia missus sum ante illum.but that I have been sent before him.

Qui habet sponsam, sponsus est:He who holds the bride is the groom.amicus autem sponsi,But the friend of the groom, qui stat, et audit eum,who stands and listens to Him,gaudio gaudet propter vocem sponsi.rejoices joyfully at the voice of the groom. And so,Hoc ergo gaudium meum impletum est.this, my joy, has been fulfilled.

Illum oportet crescere,He must increase,me autem minui.while I must decrease.

Qui desursum venit,He who comes from above, super omnes est.is above everything.Qui est de terra,He who is from below,de terra est,is of the earth,et de terra loquitur.and he speaks about the earth.Qui de cælo venit, super omnes est.He who comes from heaven is above everything.

Et quod vidit,And what he has seenet audivit, and heard, hoc testatur:about this he testifies.et testimonium ejus nemo accipit. And no one accepts his testimony.

Qui accepit ejus testimonium signavit, quia Deus verax est.Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified that God is truthful.

Quem enim misit Deus, verba Dei loquitur:For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God.non enim ad mensuram dat Deus spiritum. For God does not give the Spirit by measure.

Pater diligit FiliumThe Father loves the Son,et omnia dedit in manu ejus.and he has given everything into his hand.

Qui credit in Filium, habet vitam æternam;Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.qui autem incredulus est Filio, non videbit vitam,But whoever is unbelieving toward the Son shall not see life;sed ira Dei manet super eum.instead the wrath of God remains upon him.”
