Jericho autem clausa erat atque munita,Now Jericho was closed as well as fortified, timore filiorum Israël,out of fear of the sons of Israel,et nullus egredi audebat aut ingredi.and no one dared to depart or to enter.

Dixitque Dominus ad Josue:And the Lord said to Joshua:Ecce dedi in manu tua Jericho,“Behold,et regem ejus,I have given Jericho into your hand, omnesque fortes viros.with its king and all the strong men.

Circuite urbem cuncti bellatores semel per diem:Have all the warriors circle the city once each day;sic facietis sex diebus.you shall do so for six days.

Septimo autem die,Then, on the seventh day, sacerdotes tollant septem buccinas, the priests shall take the seven trumpets, quarum usus est in jubilæo, et præcedant arcam fœderis:which are used on the jubilee, and they shall precede the ark of the covenant.septiesque circuibitis civitatem,And you shall circle the city seven times,et sacerdotes clangent buccinis.and the priests shall sound the trumpets.

Cumque insonuerit vox tubæ longiorAnd when the voice of the trumpet sounds longer and with interruptions, atque concisior, and it increases in your ears,et in auribus vestris increpuerit, then all the people shall cry out together with a very great shout, conclamabit omnis populus vociferatione maxima, and the walls of the city shall fall to the foundation,et muri funditus corruent civitatis, and they shall enter it,ingredienturque singuli per locum contra quem steterint.each from a place opposite where they are standing.”

Vocavit ergo Josue filius Nun sacerdotes,Then Joshua, the son of Nun, called the priests,et dixit ad eos:and he said to them,Tollite arcam fœderis:“Take the ark of the covenant,et septem alii sacerdotes tollant septem jubilæorum buccinas, and let seven other priests take the seven trumpets of the jubilee,et incedant ante arcam Domini.and advance before the ark of the Lord.”

Ad populum quoque ait:He also said to the people,Ite,“Go,et circuite civitatem, and circle the city, armati, armed,præcedentes arcam Domini.preceding the ark of the Lord.”

Cumque Josue verba finisset,And when Joshua had finished his words,et septem sacerdotes septem buccinis clangerent ante arcam fœderis Domini, and the seven priests sounded the seven trumpets before the ark of the covenant of the Lord,

omnisque præcederet armatus exercitus, and all the armed soldiers went ahead, reliquum vulgus arcam sequebatur, the remainder of the common people followed the ark,ac buccinis omnia concrepabant.and the sound of the trumpets grew louder everywhere.

Præceperat autem Josue populo,But Joshua had instructed the people, dicens:saying,Non clamabitis,“You shall not cry out,nec audietur vox vestra, nor shall your voice be heard, neque ullus sermo ex ore vestro egredietur, and no word at all shall proceed from your mouth, donec veniat dies in quo dicam vobis:until the day arrives on which I will say to you,Clamate,‘Cry out,et vociferamini.and shout.’”

Circuivit ergo arca Domini civitatem semel per diem,Thus, the ark of the Lord circled the city once each day,et reversa in castra mansit ibi.and returning to the camp, it remained there.

Igitur Josue de nocte consurgente,And so, with Joshua, arising in the night, tulerunt sacerdotes arcam Domini, the priests took the ark of the Lord,

et septem ex eis septem buccinas, and seven of them took the seven trumpets, quarum in jubilæo usus est:which are used in the jubilee,præcedebantque arcam Domini ambulantesand they preceded the ark of the Lord, atque clangentes:walking and sounding the trumpets.et armatus populus ibat ante eos,And the armed men went before them, vulgus autem reliquum sequebatur arcam, and the remainder of the common people followed the ark,et buccinis personabat.and they were blaring the trumpets.

Circuieruntque civitatem secundo die semel,And they circled the city on the second day, once,et reversi sunt in castra.and they returned to the camp.Sic fecerunt sex diebus. They did so for six days.

Dies autem septimo,Then, on the seventh day, diluculo consurgentes, rising at first light, circuierunt urbem, they circled the city, sicut dispositum erat, just as had been ordered, septies.seven times.

Cumque septimo circuitu clangerent buccinis sacerdotes,And at the seventh circling, when the priests sounded the trumpets, dixit Josue ad omnem Israël:Joshua said to all of Israel:Vociferamini: tradidit enim vobis Dominus civitatem.“Shout! For the Lord has delivered the city to you.

Sitque civitas hæc anathema,And let this city be anathema,et omnia quæ in ea sunt, with all the things that are within it,Domino:before the Lord.sola Rahab meretrix vivat,May only Rahab the harlot live, cum universis qui cum ea in domo sunt:with all who are with her in the house.abscondit enim nuntios quos direximus. For she hid the messengers whom we sent.

Vos autem cavete ne de his,But you must be careful that you do not touch any of those things,quæ præcepta sunt,as you have been instructed, quippiam contingatis, for then you would be guilty of transgression,et sitis prævaricationis rei,and all the camp of Israel would be under sinet omnia castra Israël sub peccato sint atque turbentur.and would be troubled.

Quidquid autem auri et argenti fuerit,But whatever gold and silver there will be,et vasorum æneorum ac ferri, and vessels of brass or of iron,Domino consecretur, repositum in thesauris ejus.let these be consecrated to the Lord and be stored in his treasuries.”

Igitur omni populo vociferante,Therefore, with all the people shouting,et clangentibus tubis, and the trumpets blaring, postquam in aures multitudinis vox sonitusque increpuit, after the voice and the sound increased in the ears of the multitude, muri illico corruerunt:the walls promptly fell to ruin.et ascendit unusquisque per locum qui contra se erat:And each one climbed up at the place which was opposite where he was.ceperuntque civitatem,And they seized the city.

et interfecerunt omnia quæ erant in ea,And they put to death all who were in it,a viro usque ad mulierem, from man even to woman,ab infante usque ad senem.from infant even to elder.Boves quoqueLikewise,et ovesthe oxen and sheep and donkeys,et asinos in ore gladii percusserunt.they struck down with the edge of the sword.

Duobus autem viris, qui exploratores missi fuerant, dixit Josue:But Joshua said to the two men who had been sent to explore,Ingredimini domum mulieris meretricis,“Enter the house of the harlot woman,et producite eam,and bring her out,et omnia quæ illius sunt, and all the things that are hers, sicut illi juramento firmastis.just as you assured her by oath.”

Ingressique juvenes eduxerunt Rahab,And the youths entered,et parentes ejus, and they led out Rahab, fratres quoque, and her parents,et cunctam supellectilemalso her brothers,ac cognationem illius, and all her goods and kindred,et extra castra Israël manere fecerunt.and they caused them to dwell outside the camp.

Urbem autem,Then they set fire to the cityet omnia quæ erant in ea,and all the things that were within it,succenderunt, except the goldabsque auro et argento, and silver,et vasis æneis, and the vessels of brassac ferro,or of iron,quæ in ærarium Domini consecrarunt.which they consecrated into the treasury of the Lord.

Rahab vero meretricem, et domum patris ejus,Yet truly, Joshua caused Rahab the harlot,et omnia quæ habebat, and her father’s household, fecit Josue vivere, and all she had, to survive.et habitaverunt in medio Israël,And they lived in the midst of Israel, usque in præsentem diem:even to the present day.eo quod absconderit nuntios,For she hid the messengers, quos miserat ut explorarent Jericho.whom he had sent to explore Jericho. In tempore illo, imprecatus est Josue,At that time, Joshua made an invocation, dicens:saying:

Maledictus vir coram Domino,“Cursed before the Lord is the man who will raise up and rebuild the city of Jericho!qui suscitaveritWith his firstborn,et ædificaverit civitatem Jericho.may he lay its foundation,In primogenito suo fundamenta illius jaciat, and with the last of his children,et in novissimo liberorum ponat portas ejus.may he set up its gates.”

Fuit ergo Dominus cum Josue,And so the Lord was with Joshua,et nomen ejus vulgatum est in omni terra.and his name was made known throughout all the land.
