Ego vir videns paupertatem meam in virga indignationis ejus.ALEPH. I am a man watching my own poverty by the rod of his indignation.
Me minavit,ALEPH.et adduxit in tenebras,He has driven me and led me into darkness,et non in lucem.and not into light.
Tantum in me vertit et convertit manum suam tota die.ALEPH. Against me only, he has turned and turned again his hand, all day long.
Vetustam fecit pellem meam et carnem meam;BETH. My skin and my flesh, he has made old;contrivit ossa mea.he has crushed my bones.
Ædificavit in gyro meo,BETH.et circumdedit me felleHe has built all around me,et labore.and he has encircled me with gall and hardship.
In tenebrosis collocavit me,BETH. He has gathered me into darkness, quasi mortuos sempiternos.like those who are forever dead.
Circumædificavit adversum me,GHIMEL. He has built against me all around,ut non egrediar;so that I may not depart.aggravavit compedem meum.He has increased the burden of my confinement.
Sed et cum clamavero,GHIMEL.et rogavero,Yet even when I cry out and beg, exclusit orationem meam.he excludes my prayer.
Conclusit vias meas lapidibus quadris;GHIMEL. He has enclosed my ways with square stones;semitas meas subvertit.he has subverted my paths.
Ursus insidians factus est mihi,DALETH. He has become to me like a bear lying in ambush, leo in absconditis.like a lion in hiding.
Semitas meas subvertit,DALETH. He has subverted my paths,et confregit me;and he has broken me.posuit me desolatam. He has placed me in desolation.
Tetendit arcum suum,DALETH. He has bent his bow,et posuit me quasi signum ad sagittam.and he has positioned me like a target for his arrows.
Misit in renibus meis filias pharetræ suæ.HE. He has shot into my kidneys the daughters of his quiver.
Factus sum in derisum omni populo meo,HE. I have become a derision to all my people, canticum eorum tota die.their song throughout the day.
Replevit me amaritudinibus;HE. He has filled me with bitterness;inebriavit me absinthio.he has inebriated me with wormwood.
Et fregit ad numerum dentes meos;VAU. And he has broken each one of my teeth;cibavit me cinere.he has fed me with ashes.
Et repulsa est a pace anima mea;VAU. And my soul has been driven away from peace;oblitus sum bonorum.I have forgotten what is good.
Et dixi:VAU.Periit finis meus,And I said,et spes mea a Domino.“My end and my hope from the Lord has perished.”
Recordare paupertatis,ZAIN.et transgressionis meæ,Remember my poverty and my transgression, absinthii et fellis.the wormwood and the gall.
Memoria memor ero,ZAIN. I will call to mind the past,et tabescet in me anima mea.and my soul shall languish within me.
Hæc recolens in corde meo,ZAIN. These recollections are in my heart;ideo sperabo.therefore, I shall hope.
Misericordiæ Domini,HETH. By the mercies of the Lord, quia non sumus consumpti;we are not consumed.quia non defecerunt miserationes ejus. For his compassion has not passed away.
Novi diluculo,HETH. I know it at first light;multa est fides tua.great is your faithfulness.
Pars mea Dominus,HETH. “The Lord is my portion,”dixit anima mea;said my soul.propterea exspectabo eum.Because of this, I will wait for him.
Bonus est Dominus sperantibus in eum,TETH. The Lord is good to those who hope in him, animæ quærenti illum.to the soul that seeks him.
Bonum est præstolari cum silentio salutare Dei.TETH. It is good to stand ready in silence for the salvation of God.
Bonum est viro cum portaverit jugum ab adolescentia sua.TETH. It is good for a man, when he has carried the yoke from his youth.
Sedebit solitarius,JOD.et tacebit,He shall sit solitary and silent.quia levavit super se.For he has lifted it upon himself.
Ponet in pulvere os suum,JOD. He shall place his mouth in the dirt,si forte sit spes.if perhaps there may be hope.
Dabit percutienti se maxillam:JOD. He shall give his cheek to those who strike him;saturabitur opprobriis.he shall be saturated with reproaches.
Quia non repellet in sempiternum Dominus.CAPH. For the Lord will not rebuke forever.
Quia si abjecit, et miserebitur, secundum multitudinem misericordiarum suarum.CAPH. For, if he has cast down, he will also have compassion, according to the multitude of his mercies.
Non enim humiliavit ex corde suo et abjecit filios hominum.CAPH. For he has not humiliated from his heart, nor has he thrown aside the sons of men,
Ut conteret sub pedibus suis omnes vinctos terræ.LAMED. as if to crush under his feet all the prisoners of the land,
Ut declinaret judicium viri in conspectu vultus Altissimi.LAMED. as if to turn aside the judgment of a man in the sight of the presence of the Most High,
Ut perverteret hominem in judicio suo;LAMED. as if to pervert a man in his judgment:Dominus ignoravit.the Lord does not do this.
Quis est iste qui dixit ut fieret, Domino non jubente?MEM. Who is this, who said to do what the Lord did not command?
Ex ore Altissimi non egredientur nec mala nec bona?MEM. Does not both misfortune and good proceed from the mouth of the Most High?
Quid murmuravit homo vivens,MEM. Why has a living man murmured, vir pro peccatis suis?a man suffering for his sins?
Scrutemur vias nostras,NUN. Let us examine our ways,et quæramus, and seek out,et revertamur ad Dominum.and return to the Lord.
Levemus corda nostra cum manibus ad Dominum in cælos.NUN. Let us lift up our hearts, with our hands, toward the Lord in the heavens.
Nos inique egimus,NUN. We have acted sinfully,et ad iracundiam provocavimus;and we have provoked to wrath.idcirco tu inexorabilis es.About this, you are relentless.
Operuisti in furore,SAMECH. You have covered us in your fury,et percussisti nos;and you have struck us.occidisti,You have killed, nec pepercisti.and have not spared.
Opposuisti nubem tibi,SAMECH. You have set a cloud opposite you,ne transeat oratio.lest our prayer pass through.
Eradicationem et abjectionem posuisti me in medio populorum.SAMECH. In the midst of the peoples, you have uprooted me and cast me out.
Aperuerunt super nos os suum omnes inimici.PHE. All our enemies have opened their mouths over us.
Formido et laqueus facta est nobis vaticinatio,PHE. Prediction has become for us a dread, and a snare,et contritio.and a grief.
Divisiones aquarum deduxit oculus meus,PHE.in contritione filiæ populi mei.My eye has brought forth streams of water at the contrition of the daughter of my people.
Oculus meus afflictus est,AIN. My eye has been afflicted, nec tacuit, eo quod non esset requies.and it has not been quieted, because there would be no rest
Donec respiceretAIN.et videret Dominus de cælis.until the Lord looked down and saw from the heavens.
Oculus meus deprædatus est animam meam in cunctis filiabus urbis meæ.AIN. My eye has exhausted my soul over every one of the daughters of my city.
Venatione ceperunt me quasi avem inimici mei gratis.SADE. My enemies have chased me, and they have caught me like a bird, without reason.
Lapsa est in lacum vita mea,SADE. My life has fallen into a pit,et posuerunt lapidem super me.and they have placed a stone over me.
Inundaverunt aquæ super caput meum;SADE. The waters have flooded over my head.dixi:I said,Perii.“I am lost.”
Invocavi nomen tuum,COPH. I called upon your name,Domine,O Lord,de lacu novissimo.from the furthest pit.
Vocem meam audisti;COPH.ne avertas aurem tuam a singultu meoYou have heard my voice.et clamoribus.Do not turn away your ear from my sobbing and my cries.
Appropinquasti in die quando invocavi te;COPH. You drew near in the daytime, when I called upon you.dixisti:You said,Ne timeas.“Fear not.”
Judicasti, Domine,RES. You have judged, causam animæ meæ,O Lord, the case of my soul.redemptor vitæ meæ.You are the Redeemer of my life.
Vidisti, Domine,RES. You have seen, iniquitatem illorum adversum me:O Lord, their iniquity against me.judica judicium meum.Judge my case.
Vidisti omnem furorem,RES. You have seen all their fury, universas cogitationes eorum adversum me.every one of their thoughts is against me.
Audisti opprobrium eorum, Domine,SIN. You have heard their reproach, omnes cogitationes eorum adversum me.O Lord, all their thoughts are against me.
Labia insurgentium mihi,SIN. The lips of those who rise up against me,et meditationes eorum adversum me tota die.and their meditations, are against me all day long.
Sessionem eorumSIN.et resurrectionem eorum vide;Watch their sitting down and their rising up:ego sum psalmus eorum.I am their psalm.
Redes eis vicem, Domine,THAU. You shall pay a recompense to them, juxta opera manuum suarum.O Lord, according to the works of their hands.
Dabis eis scutum cordis,THAU. You shall give them a heavy shield of the heart:laborem tuum.your hardship.
Persequeris in furore,THAU. You shall pursue them in fury,et conteres eos sub cælis, Domine.and you shall destroy them under the heavens, O Lord.
