Quoniam quidem multi conati sunt ordinare narrationem,Since,quæ in nobis completæ sunt, indeed, rerum:many have attempted to set in order a narrative of the things that have been completed among us,
sicut tradiderunt nobis, qui ab initio ipsi viderunt, et ministri fuerunt sermonis:just as they have been handed on to those of us who from the beginning saw the same and were ministers of the word,
visum estso it seemed good to me also,et mihi, having diligently followed everything from the beginning, assecuto omnia a principio diligenter,to write to you,ex ordine tibi scribere,in an orderly manner, optime Theophile, most excellent Theophilus,
ut cognoscas eorum verborum, de quibus eruditus es, veritatem.so that you might know the truthfulness of those words by which you have been instructed.
Fuit in diebus Herodis,There was, in the days of Herod, regis Judææ,king of Judea, sacerdos quidam nomine Zacharias de vice Abia,a certain priest named Zechariah, of the section of Abijah,et uxor illius de filiabus Aaron, and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron,et nomen ejus Elisabeth.and her name was Elizabeth.
Erant autem justi ambo ante Deum,Now they were both just before God,incedentes in omnibus mandatis et justificationibus Domini sine querela.progressing in all of the commandments and the justifications of the Lord without blame.
Et non erat illis filius,And they had no child,eo quod esset Elisabeth sterilis, because Elizabeth was barren,et ambo processissent in diebus suis.and they both had become advanced in years.
Factum est autem,Then it happened that, cum sacerdotio fungeretur in ordine vicis suæ ante Deum, when he was exercising the priesthood before God, in the order of his section,
secundum consuetudinem sacerdotii, according to the custom of the priesthood, sorte exiit ut incensum poneret, the lot fell so that he would offer incense, ingressus in templum Domini:entering into the temple of the Lord.
et omnis multitudo populi erat orans foris hora incensi. And the entire multitude of the people was praying outside, at the hour of incense.
Apparuit autem illi angelus Domini,Then there appeared to him an Angel of the Lord, stans a dextris altaris incensi.standing at the right of the altar of incense.
Et Zacharias turbatus est videns,And upon seeing him, Zechariah was disturbed,et timor irruit super eum.and fear fell over him.
Ait autem ad illum angelus:But the Angel said to him:Ne timeas,“Do not be afraid,Zacharia,Zechariah, quoniam exaudita est deprecatio tua:for your prayer has been heard,et uxor tua Elisabeth pariet tibi filium, and your wife Elizabeth shall bear a son to you.et vocabis nomen ejus Joannem:And you shall call his name John.
et erit gaudium tibi,And there will be joyet exsultatio, and exultation for you,et multi in nativitate ejus gaudebunt:and many will rejoice in his nativity.
erit enim magnus coram Domino:For he will be great in the sight of the Lord,et vinumand he will not drink wine or strong drink,et siceram non bibet, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit,et Spiritu Sancto replebitur adhuc ex utero matris suæ:even from his mother’s womb.
et multos filiorum Israël convertet ad Dominum Deum ipsorum:And he will convert many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God.
et ipse præcedet ante illum in spiritu et virtute Eliæ:And he will go before him with the spirit and power of Elijah,ut convertat corda patrum in filios,so that he may turn the hearts of the fathers to the sons,et incredulos ad prudentiam justorum, and the incredulous to the prudence of the just, parare Domino plebem perfectam.so as to prepare for the Lord a completed people.”
Et dixit Zacharias ad angelum:And Zechariah said to the Angel:Unde hoc sciam?“How may I know this?ego enim sum senex,For I am elderly,et uxor mea processit in diebus suis.and my wife is advanced in years.”
Et respondens angelus dixit ei:And in response, the Angel said to him:Ego sum Gabriel,“I am Gabriel, qui asto ante Deum:who stands before God,et missus sum loqui ad te,and I have been sent to speak to you,et hæc tibi evangelizare.and to proclaim these things to you.
Et ecce eris tacens,And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak,et non poteris loqui usque in diem quo hæc fiant, until the day on which these things shall be,pro eo quod non credidisti verbis meis, because you have not believed my words,quæ implebuntur in tempore suo.which will be fulfilled in their time.”
Et erat plebs exspectans Zachariam:And the people were waiting for Zechariah.et mirabantur quod tardaret ipse in templo. And they wondered why he was being delayed in the temple.
Egressus autem non poterat loqui ad illos,Then, when he came out, he was unable to speak to them.et cognoverunt quod visionem vidisset in templo. And they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple.Et ipse erat innuens illis,And he was making signs to them,et permansit mutus.but he remained mute.
Et factum est,And it happened that,ut impleti sunt dies officii ejus, after the days of his office were completed, abiit in domum suam:he went away to his house.
post hos autem dies concepit Elisabeth uxor ejus,Then, after those days, his wife Elizabeth conceived,et occultabat se mensibus quinque, and she hid herself for five months, dicens:saying:
Quia sic fecit mihi Dominus in diebus,“For the Lord did this for me,quibus respexit auferre opprobrium meum inter homines.at the time when he decided to take away my reproach among men.”
In mense autem sexto,Then, in the sixth month, missus est angelus Gabriel a Deo in civitatem Galilææ, cui nomen Nazareth, the Angel Gabriel was sent by God, to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
ad virginem desponsatam viro, cui nomen erat Joseph,to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph,de domo David:of the house of David;et nomen virginis Maria.and the name of the virgin was Mary.
Et ingressus angelus ad eam dixit:And upon entering, the Angel said to her:Ave gratia plena:“Hail, full of grace.Dominus tecum:The Lord is with you.benedicta tu in mulieribus.Blessed are you among women.”
Quæ cum audisset,And when she had heard this, turbata est in sermone ejus, she was disturbed by his words,et cogitabat qualis esset ista salutatio.and she considered what kind of greeting this might be.
Et ait angelus ei:And the Angel said to her:Ne timeas,“Do not be afraid,Maria:Mary, invenisti enim gratiam apud Deum.for you have found grace with God.
Ecce concipies in utero,Behold, you shall conceive in your womb,et paries filium, and you shall bear a son,et vocabis nomen ejus Jesum:and you shall call his name: JESUS.
hic erit magnus,He will be great,et Filius Altissimi vocabitur, and he will be called the Son of the Most High,et dabit illi Dominus Deus sedem David patris ejus:and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father.et regnabit in domo Jacob in æternum,And he will reign in the house of Jacob for eternity.
et regni ejus non erit finis. And his kingdom shall have no end.”
Dixit autem Maria ad angelum:Then Mary said to the Angel,Quomodo fiet istud,“How shall this be done, quoniam virum non cognosco?since I do not know man?”
Et respondens angelus dixit ei:And in response,Spiritus Sanctus superveniet in te,the Angel said to her:et virtus Altissimi obumbrabit tibi.“The Holy Spirit will pass over you,Ideoqueand the power of the Most High will overshadow you.et quod nascetur ex te sanctum,And because of this also, vocabitur Filius Dei.the Holy One who will be born of you shall be called the Son of God.
Et ecce Elisabeth cognata tua,And behold,et ipsa concepit filium in senectute sua:your cousin Elizabeth has herself also conceived a son,et hic mensis sextus est illi,in her old age.quæ vocatur sterilis:And this is the sixth month for her who is called barren.
quia non erit impossibile apud Deum omne verbum. For no word will be impossible with God.”
Dixit autem Maria:Then Mary said: “Behold,Ecce ancilla Domini:I am the handmaid of the Lord.fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum.Let it be done to me according to your word.”Et discessit ab illa angelus. And the Angel departed from her.
Exsurgens autem Maria in diebus illis,And in those days, Mary, rising up,abiit in montana cum festinatione, traveled quickly into the hill country,in civitatem Juda:to a city of Judah.
et intravit in domum Zachariæ,And she entered into the house of Zechariah,et salutavit Elisabeth.and she greeted Elizabeth.
Et factum est,And it happened that,ut audivit salutationem Mariæ Elisabeth,as Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, exsultavit infans in utero ejus:the infant leaped in her womb,et repleta est Spiritu Sancto Elisabeth:and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
et exclamavit voce magna,And she cried out with a loud voiceet dixit:and said:Benedicta tu inter mulieres,“Blessed are you among women,et benedictus fructus ventris tui.and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
Et unde hoc mihi,And how does this concern me,ut veniat mater Domini mei ad me?so that the mother of my Lord would come to me?
Ecce enim ut facta est vox salutationis tuæ in auribus meis,For behold, as the voice of your greeting came to my ears, exsultavit in gaudio infans in utero meo.the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Et beata, quæ credidisti,And blessed are you who believed, quoniam perficientur ea, quæ dicta sunt tibi a Domino.for the things that were spoken to you by the Lord shall be accomplished.”
Et ait Maria:And Mary said:Magnificat anima mea Dominum:“My soul magnifies the Lord.
et exsultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo.And my spirit leaps for joy in God my Savior.
Quia respexit humilitatem ancillæ suæ:For he has looked with favor on the humility of his handmaid.ecce enim ex hoc beatam me dicent omnes generationes,For behold, from this time, all generations shall call me blessed.
quia fecit mihi magna qui potens est:For he who is great has done great things for me,et sanctum nomen ejus, and holy is his name.
et misericordia ejus a progenie in progenies timentibus eum.And his mercy is from generation to generations for those who fear him.
Fecit potentiam in brachio suo:He has accomplished powerful deeds with his arm.dispersit superbos mente cordis sui.He has scattered the arrogant in the intentions of their heart.
Deposuit potentes de sede,He has deposed the powerful from their seat,et exaltavit humiles.and he has exalted the humble.
Esurientes implevit bonis:He has filled the hungry with good things,et divites dimisit inanes.and the rich he has sent away empty.
Suscepit Israël puerum suum,He has taken up his servant Israel, recordatus misericordiæ suæ:mindful of his mercy,
sicut locutus est ad patres nostros, just as he spoke to our fathers:Abraham et semini ejus in sæcula.to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”
Mansit autem Maria cum illa quasi mensibus tribus:Then Mary stayed with her for about three months.et reversa est in domum suam. And she returned to her own house.
Elisabeth autem impletum est tempus pariendi,Now the time for Elizabeth to give birth arrived,et peperit filium.and she brought forth a son.
Et audierunt vicini et cognati ejus quia magnificavit Dominus misericordiam suam cum illa,And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy with her,et congratulabantur ei.and so they congratulated her.
Et factum est in die octavo,And it happened that, on the eighth day, venerunt circumcidere puerum, they arrived to circumcise the boy,et vocabant eum nomine patris sui Zachariam.and they called him by his father’s name, Zechariah.
Et respondens mater ejus,And in response, his mother said:dixit:“Not so.Nequaquam,Instead, sed vocabitur Joannes.he shall be called John.”
Et dixerunt ad illam:And they said to her,Quia nemo est in cognatione tua, qui vocetur hoc nomine.“But there is no one among your relatives who is called by that name.”
Innuebant autem patri ejus,Then they made signs to his father, quem vellet vocari eum.as to what he wanted him to be called.
Et postulans pugillarem scripsit,And requesting a writing tablet, dicens:he wrote,Joannes est nomen ejus.saying: “His name is John.”Et mirati sunt universi. And they all wondered.
Apertum est autem illico os ejus,Then, at once, his mouth was opened,et lingua ejus, and his tongue loosened,et loquebatur benedicens Deum.and he spoke, blessing God.
Et factus est timor super omnes vicinos eorum:And fear fell upon all of their neighbors.et super omnia montana Judææ divulgabantur omnia verba hæc:And all these words were made known throughout all the hill country of Judea.
et posuerunt omnes qui audierant in corde suo, dicentes:And all those who heard it stored it up in their heart, saying:Quis, putas, puer iste erit?“What do you think this boy will be?”etenim manus Domini erat cum illo. And indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him.
Et Zacharias pater ejus repletus est Spiritu Sancto:And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit.et prophetavit,And he prophesied, dicens:saying:
Benedictus Dominus Deus Israël,“Blessed is the Lord God of Israel.quia visitavit,For he has visitedet fecit redemptionem plebis suæ:and has wrought the redemption of his people.
et erexit cornu salutis nobis in domo David pueri sui,And he has raised up a horn of salvation for us, in the house of David his servant,
sicut locutus est per os sanctorum, qui a sæculo sunt, just as he spoke by the mouth of his holy Prophets, prophetarum ejus:who are from ages past:
salutem ex inimicis nostris, salvation from our enemies,et de manu omnium qui oderunt nos:and from the hand of all those who hate us,
ad faciendam misericordiam cum patribus nostris:to accomplish mercy with our fathers,et memorari testamenti sui sancti:and to call to mind his holy testament,
jusjurandum, the oath, quod juravit ad Abraham patrem nostrum, which he swore to Abraham, our father, daturum se nobisthat he would grant to us,
ut sine timore,so that,de manu inimicorum nostrorum liberati, having been freed from the hand of our enemies, serviamus illiwe may serve him without fear,
in sanctitate et justitia coram ipso,in holiness and in justice before him, omnibus diebus nostris.throughout all our days.
Et tu puer,And you, child, propheta Altissimi vocaberis:shall be called the prophet of the Most High.præibis enim ante faciem Domini parare vias ejus,For you will go before the face of the Lord: to prepare his ways,
ad dandam scientiam salutis plebi ejus in remissionem peccatorum eorumto give knowledge of salvation to his people for the remission of their sins,
per viscera misericordiæ Dei nostri, through the heart of the mercy of our God,in quibus visitavit nos,by which, descending from on high, oriens ex alto:he has visited us,
illuminare his qui in tenebris et in umbra mortis sedent:to illuminate those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,ad dirigendos pedes nostros in viam pacis.and to direct our feet in the way of peace.”
Puer autem crescebat, et confortabatur spiritu:And the child grew, and he was strengthened in spirit.et erat in desertis usque in diem ostensionis suæ ad Israël.And he was in the wilderness, until the day of his manifestation to Israel.
