Et factum est,And it happened that,ut audierunt gentes in circuitu quia ædificatum est altare et sanctuarium sicut prius, when the surrounding nations heard that the altar and the sanctuary had been rebuilt as before, iratæ sunt valde:they were very angry.

et cogitabant tollere genus Jacob, qui erant inter eos,And they intended to destroy the people of Jacob that were among them,et cœperunt occidere de populo, and they began to kill some of the people,et persequi.and to persecute them.

Et debellabat Judas filios Esau in Idumæa,Then Judas defeated in warfare the sons of Esau in Idumea,et eos qui erant in Acrabathane, and those who were in Akrabattene, quia circumsedebant Israëlitas:because they besieged the Israelites,et percussit eos plaga magna.and he struck them with a great scourging.

Et recordatus est malitiam filiorum Bean,And he remembered the malice of the sons of Baean, qui erant populo in laqueum et in scandalum, who were a snare and a scandal to the people, insidiantes ei in via.lying in ambush for them in the way.

Et conclusi sunt ab eo in turribus,And they were trapped by him in the towers,et applicuit ad eos,and he took up a position near them,et anathematizavit eos,and he anathematized them,et incendit turres eorum igni cum omnibus qui in eis erant.and he burned their towers with fire, along with all who were in them.

Et transivit ad filios Ammon,Then he crossed over to the sons of Ammon,et invenit manum fortem, and he found a strong hand,et populum copiosum, and an abundant people,et Timotheum ducem ipsorum:and Timothy was their commander.

et commisit cum eis prælia multa,And he engaged in many battles with them,et contriti sunt in conspectu eorum, and they were crushed in their sight,et percussit eos:and he struck them down.

et cepit Gazer civitatemAnd he seized the city of Jazer,et filias ejus, and her sister cities,et reversus est in Judæam.and he returned to Judea.

Et congregatæ sunt gentes quæ sunt in Galaad adversus Israëlitas,And the Gentiles, who were in Gilead, gathered together against the Israelites, qui erant in finibus eorum, who were within their borders,ut tollerent eos:to take them away,et fugerunt in Datheman munitionem.and so they fled into the fortress of Dathema.

Et miserunt litteras ad Judam et fratres ejus,And they sent letters to Judasdicentes:and his brothers,Congregatæ sunt adversum nos gentes per circuitum, saying:ut nos auferant,“The Gentiles all around have been gathering together against us to carry us away.

et parant venire, et occupare munitionem, in quam confugimus:And they are preparing to come and occupy the fortress into which we have fled.et Timotheus est dux exercitus eorum. And Timothy is the commander of their army.

Nunc ergo veni,Now, therefore,et eripe nos de manibus eorum, come and rescue us from their hands, quia cecidit multitudo de nobis.for many of us have fallen.

Et omnes fratres nostri,And all our brothers, qui erant in locis Tubin, who were in the places of Tob,interfecti sunt:have been put to death.et captivas duxerunt uxores eorum,And they have led away as captives their wives,et natos, and their children,et spolia, and their spoils.et peremerunt illic fere mille viros. And they have slain nearly a thousand men in that place.”

Et adhuc epistolæ legebantur,And while they were still reading these letters,et ecce alii nuntii venerunt de Galilæa conscissis tunicis, behold, there arrived from Galilee other messengers, with torn garments, nuntiantes secundum verba hæc:who announced according to these words:

dicentes convenisse adversum se a Ptolemaida, saying that those of Ptolemaiset Tyro, and Tyreet Sidone:and Sidon have assembled against them,et repleta est omnis Galilæa alienigenis,“and all of Galilee has been filled with foreigners,ut nos consumant.in order to consume us.”

Ut audivit autem Judas et populus sermones istos,So then, convenit ecclesia magna cogitare quid facerent fratribus suis, when Judas and the people heard these words, qui in tribulatione erant,a great assembly came together,et expugnabantur ab eis.to consider what they should do for their brothers who were in trouble and were being assailed by them.

Dixitque Judas Simoni fratri suo:And Judas said to Simon his brother:Elige tibi viros,“Choose men for yourself,et vade, and go,et libera fratres tuos in Galilæa:and free your brothers in Galilee.ego autemBut I and my brother Jonathan,et frater meus Jonathas ibimus in Galaaditim.will go into the country of Gilead.”

Et reliquit Josephum filium Zachariæ,And he left behind Joseph, son of Zachariah, and Azariah,et Azariam, duces populi,as commanders of the people, cum residuo exercitu in Judæa ad custodiam:with the remainder of the army, in Judea, to guard it.

et præcepit illis,And he instructed them, dicens:saying,Præestote populo huic:“Take charge of this people,et nolite bellum committere adversum gentes, but do not go to war against the Gentiles, donec revertamur.until we return.”

Et partiti sunt Simoni viri tria millia,Now three thousand men were divided to Simon, to go into Galilee,ut iret in Galilæam: Judæ autem octo millia in Galaaditim.but eight thousand were divided to Judas, to go into the land of Gilead.

Et abiit Simon in Galilæam,And Simon went into Galilee,et commisit prælia multa cum gentibus:and he engaged in many battles with the Gentiles,et contritæ sunt gentes a facie ejus, and the Gentiles were crushed before his face,et persecutus est eos usque ad portamand he pursued them even to the gates of Ptolemais.

Ptolemaidis: et ceciderunt de gentibus fere tria millia virorum. And there fell of the Gentiles nearly three thousand men,Et accepit spolia eorum, and he took their spoils.

et assumpsit eos qui erant in Galilæa et in Arbatis,And he took with him those who were in Galilee and in Arbatta, cum uxoribus, et natis, with their wives and children,et omnibus quæ erant illis, and all that was theirs,et adduxit in Judæam cum lætitia magna.and he led them into Judea with great rejoicing.

Et Judas Machabæus,And Judas Maccabeus,et Jonathas frater ejus, and Jonathan his brother, transierunt Jordanem, crossed over the Jordan,et abierunt viam trium dierum per desertum.and they traveled three days’ journey through the desert.

Et occurrerunt eis Nabuthæi,And the Nabateans met them,et susceperunt eos pacifice, and they accepted them peacefully,et narraverunt eis omnia quæ acciderant fratribus eorum in Galaaditide, and they described to them all that had happened to their brothers in the land of Gilead,

et quia multi ex eis comprehensi sunt in Barasa, and that many of them were trapped in Bozrah,et Bosor, and Bosor,et in Alimis, and Alema,et in Casphor, and in Chaspho,et Mageth, and Maked,et Carnaim:and Carnaim.hæ omnes civitates munitæ et magnæ.All these are large and fortified cities.

Sed et in ceteris civitatibus Galaaditidis tenentur comprehensi,Moreover, they were held in their grasp in the other cities of Gilead,et in crastinum constituerunt admovere exercitum civitatibus his,and they had arranged to move their army, on the next day, to these cities,et comprehendere, and to seize them,et tollere eos in una die.and to destroy them all in one day.

Et convertit JudasThen Judas and his army unexpectedly turned their path into the desert,et exercitus ejus viam in desertum Bosor repente,to Bosor,et occupavit civitatem:and they occupied the city.et occidit omnem masculum in ore gladii,And he killed every male by the edge of the sword,et accepit omnia spolia eorum, and took all their spoils,et succendit eam igni.and burned it with fire.

Et surrexerunt inde nocte,And they arose from there by night,et ibant usque ad munitionem.and they went forth all the way to the fortress.

Et factum est diluculo,And it happened that, at first light, cum elevassent oculos suos, when they lifted up their eyes, behold, ecce populus multus, there was a multitude of people, cujus non erat numerus, which could not be numbered, portantes scalas et machinas ut comprehenderent munitionem, bringing ladders and machines, in order to seize the fortress,et expugnarent eos.and to assault them.

Et vidit Judas quia cœpit bellum,And Judas saw that the fight had begun,et clamor belli ascendit ad cælum sicut tuba, and the cry of the battle went up to heaven like a trumpet,et clamor magnus de civitate:and a great cry went out of the city.

et dixit exercitui suo:And he said to his army,Pugnate hodie pro fratribus vestris.“Fight today on behalf of your brothers.”

Et venit tribus ordinibus post eos,And he came, with three companies behind them,et exclamaverunt tubis, and they sounded the trumpets,et clamaverunt in oratione.and they cried out in prayer.

Et cognoverunt castra Timothei quia Machabæus est,And the camp of Timothy knew that it was Maccabeus,et refugerunt a facie ejus:and they took flight before his face.et percusserunt eos plaga magna. And they struck them with a great scourging.Et ceciderunt ex eis in die illa fere octo millia virorum. And there fell from them in that day nearly eight thousand men.

Et divertit Judas in Maspha,And Judas diverted to Mizpah,et expugnavit, and he foughtet cepit eam:and seized it.et occidit omnem masculum ejus,And he killed all of its males,et sumpsit spolia ejus, and he took its spoils,et succendit eam igni.and he burned it with fire.

Inde perrexit,From there, he continued on,et cepit Casbon, and he seized Chaspho,et Mageth, and Maked,et Bosor, and Bosor,et reliquas civitates Galaaditidis.and the rest of the cities of Gilead.

Post hæc autem verba congregavit Timotheus exercitum alium,But after these events, Timothy gathered together another army,et castra posuit contra Raphon trans torrentem.and he positioned his camp opposite Raphon, across the torrent.

Et misit Judas speculari exercitum:And Judas sent men to catch sight of the army.et renuntiaverunt ei,And they reported back to him, dicentes:saying:Quia convenerunt ad eum omnes gentes quæ in circuitu nostro sunt,“All the nations that surround us have assembled before him, exercitus multus nimis:with an exceedingly great army.

et Arabas conduxerunt in auxilium sibi,And they have brought the Arabians as auxiliaries to them,et castra posuerunt trans torrentem, and they have set up camp across the torrent, parati ad te venire in prælium.in preparation to come against you in battle.”Et abiit Judas obviam illis. And Judas went to meet them.

Et ait Timotheus principibus exercitus sui:And Timothy said to the leaders of his army:Cum appropinquaverit Judas,“When Judaset exercitus ejus, and his army approach,ad torrentem aquæ:close to the torrent of water,si transierit ad nos prior,if he crosses over to us first, non poterimus sustinere eum,we will not be able to withstand him.quia potens poterit adversum nos;For he will be able to prevail against us.

si vero timuerit transire,If, truly, he is afraid to cross over,et posuerit castra extra flumen, and so he sets up camp across the river, transfretamus ad eos,we will cross over to them,et poterimus adversus illum.and we will prevail against him.”

Ut autem appropinquavit Judas ad torrentem aquæ,But when Judas approached, close to the torrent of water, statuit scribas populi secus torrentem,he stationed the scribes of the people near the torrent,et mandavit eis,and he commanded them, dicens:saying,Neminem hominem reliqueritis,“Permit no man to stay behind, sed veniant omnes in prælium.but let all come into the battle.”

Et transfretavit ad illos prior,And he crossed over to them first,et omnis populus post eum,and all the people after him.et contritæ sunt omnes gentes a facie eorum,And all the Gentiles were crushed before their face,et projecerunt arma sua,and they threw away their weapons,et fugerunt ad fanum, quod erat in Carnaim.and they fled to the temple that was in Carnaim.

Et occupavit ipsam civitatem,And he occupied that city,et fanum succendit igni cum omnibus qui erant in ipso:and he burned the temple with fire, along with all the things that were in it.et oppressa est Carnaim,And Carnaim was subdued,et non potuit sustinere contra faciem Judæ.and it could not stand against the face of Judas.

Et congregavit Judas universos Israëlitas, qui erant in Galaaditide,And Judas gathered together all the Israelites who were in the land of Gilead,a minimo usque ad maximum, from the least even to the greatest,et uxores eorum, et natos, with their wives and children,et exercitum magnum valde, and a very great army,ut venirent in terram Juda.to come into the land of Judah.

Et venerunt usque Ephron:And they came as far as Ephron.et hæc civitas magna in ingressu posita,And this was a great city, munita valde, positioned at the entrance,et non erat declinare ab ea dexterastrongly fortified, vel sinistra, and there was no way to go around it on the right or on the left, sed per mediam iter erat.but the path was through the midst of it.

Et incluserunt se qui erant in civitate,And those who were in the city shut themselves inet obstruxerunt portas lapidibus:and barricaded the gates with stones.et misit ad eos Judas verbis pacificis,And so Judas sent to them with words of peace,

dicens:saying,Transeamus per terram vestram,“Let us cross through your land,ut eamus in terram nostram:to go into our own land,et nemo vobis nocebit, and no one will harm you;tantum pedibus transibimus.we will only cross through on foot.”Et nolebant eis aperire. But they were not willing to open to them.

Et præcepit Judas prædicare in castris,Then Judas instructed a proclamation to be made in the camp,ut applicarent unusquisque in quo erat loco:that they would engage them, each one from the place where he was.

et applicuerunt se viri virtutis,And the men of the army drew close.et oppugnavit civitatem illam tota die et tota nocte,And he assaulted that city all day and all night.et tradita est civitas in manu ejus:And the city was delivered into his hand.

et peremerunt omnem masculum in ore gladii,And they destroyed every male with the edge of the sword,et eradicavit eam,and he eradicated the city,et accepit spolia ejus:and he took its spoils,et transivit per totam civitatem super interfectos.and he crossed through the entire city, over those who had been slain.

Et transgressi sunt Jordanem in campo magno, contra faciem Bethsan. Then they crossed over the Jordan to the great plain that is opposite the face of Bethshan.

Et erat Judas congregans extremos,And Judas was gathering the stragglers and exhorting the people,et exhortabatur populum per totam viam, throughout the entire way, donec venirent in terram Juda:until they came into the land of Judah.

et ascenderunt in montem Sion cum lætitia,And they ascended to mount Zion with joy and gladness,et gaudio, and they offered holocausts,et obtulerunt holocausta, because not one of them had fallen, quod nemo ex eis cecidisset donec reverterentur in pace.until they had returned in peace.

Et in diebus quibus erat Judas et Jonathas in terra Galaad,Now in the days that Judas and Jonathan were in the land of Gilead,et Simon frater ejus in Galilæa contra faciem Ptolemaidis, and Simon his brother was in Galilee against the face of Ptolemais:

audivit Josephus Zachariæ filius,Joseph, the son of Zachariah,et Azarias princeps virtutis, and Azariah, the leader of the army, res bene gestas, et prælia quæ facta sunt, heard good things about the battles that were fought.

et dixit:And he said,Faciamus et ipsi nobis nomen,“Let us also make a name for ourselves,et eamus pugnare adversus gentes quæ in circuitu nostro sunt.and let us go to fight against the Gentiles that are all around us.”

Et præcepit his qui erant in exercitu suo,And he gave orders to those who were in his army,et abierunt Jamniam.and they went out towards Jamnia.

Et exivit Gorgias de civitate,And Gorgias and his men exited the city,et viri ejus obviam illis in pugnam.to meet them in the fight.

Et fugati sunt Josephus et Azarias usque in fines Judææ:And Joseph and Azariah were forced to flee, even to the borders of Judea.et ceciderunt illo die de populo Israël ad duo millia viri,And there fell on that day, from the people of Israel, up to two thousand men,et facta est fuga magna in populo:and it was a great defeat for the people.

quia non audierunt Judam,For they did not listen to Judaset fratres ejus, and his brothers, existimantes fortiter se facturos.supposing that they should act boldly.

Ipsi autem non erant de semine virorum illorum, per quos salus facta est in Israël.But these were not of the offspring of those men by whom salvation was brought to Israel.

Et viri Juda magnificati sunt valde in conspectu omnis Israël,And the men of Judah were magnified greatly in the sight of all Israelet gentium omnium ubi audiebatur nomen eorum.and of all the nations where their name was heard.

Et convenerunt ad eos fausta acclamantes. And the people gathered to them with favorable acclamations.

Et exivit Judas et fratres ejus, et expugnabant filios Esau in terra quæ ad austrum est,And so Judas and his brothers went out and assailed the sons of Esau, in the land that is toward the south,et percussit Chebron et filias ejus:and he struck Hebron and her sister cities,et muros ejus, et turres succendit igni in circuitu.and he burned its walls and the towers all around it with fire.

Et movit castra ut iret in terram alienigenarum,And he moved his camp to go into the land of the foreigners,et perambulabat Samariam.and he traveled through Samaria.

In die illa ceciderunt sacerdotes in bello,In that day, some priests fell in battle.dum volunt fortiter facere,Since they desired to act boldly, dum sine consilio exeunt in prælium.they went out, without counsel, into the battle.

Et declinavit Judas in Azotum in terram alienigenarum,And Judas turned aside to Azotus, into the land of the foreigners,et diruit aras eorum, and he destroyed their altars,et sculptilia deorum ipsorum succendit igni:and he burned the statues of their gods with fire.et cepit spolia civitatum,And he seized the spoils of the cities,et reversus est in terram Juda.and he returned to the land of Judah.
