Et inde exsurgens venit in fines Judææ ultra Jordanem:And rising up, he went from there into the area of Judea beyond the Jordan.et conveniunt iterum turbæ ad eum:And again, the crowd came together before him.et sicut consueverat, iterum docebat illos. And just as he was accustomed to do, again he taught them.
Et accedentes pharisæi interrogabant eum:And approaching, the Pharisees questioned him,Si licet viro uxorem dimittere: tentantes eum.testing him: “Is it lawful for a man to dismiss his wife?”
At ille respondens,But in response, dixit eis:he said to them,Quid vobis præcepit Moyses?“What did Moses instruct you?”
Qui dixerunt:And they said,Moyses permisit libellum repudii scribere,“Moses gave permission to write a bill of divorceet dimittere.and to dismiss her.”
Quibus respondens Jesus,But Jesus responded by saying:ait: Ad duritiam cordis vestri scripsit vobis præceptum istud:“It was due to the hardness of your heart that he wrote that precept for you.
ab initio autem creaturæ masculumBut from the beginning of creation,et feminam fecit eos Deus.God made them male and female.
Propter hoc relinquet homo patrem suumBecause of this,et matrem,a man shall leave behind his father and mother,et adhærebit ad uxorem suam:and he shall cling to his wife.
et erunt duo in carne una.And these two shall be one in flesh.Itaque jam non sunt duo,And so, they are now, not two,sed una caro.but one flesh.
Quod ergo Deus conjunxit,Therefore, what God has joined together, homo non separet.let no man separate.”
Et in domo iterum discipuli ejus de eodem interrogaverunt eum.And again, in the house, his disciples questioned him about the same thing.
Et ait illis:And he said to them:Quicumque dimiserit uxorem suam,“Whoever dismisses his wife,et aliam duxerit, and marries another, adulterium committit super eam.commits adultery against her.
Et si uxor dimiserit virum suum,And if a wife dismisses her husband,et alii nupserit, and is married to another,mœchatur.she commits adultery.”
Et offerebant illi parvulos ut tangeret illos. And they brought to him the little children, so that he might touch them.Discipuli autem comminabantur offerentibus. But the disciples admonished those who brought them.
Quos cum videret Jesus,But when Jesus saw this, indigne tulit,he took offense,et ait illis:and he said to them:Sinite parvulos venire ad me,“Allow the little ones to come to me,et ne prohibueritis eos:and do not prohibit them.talium enim est regnum Dei.For of such as these is the kingdom of God.
Amen dico vobis:Amen I say to you,Quisquis non receperit regnum Dei velut parvulus, whoever will not accept the kingdom of God like a little child, non intrabit in illud.will not enter into it.”
Et complexans eos,And embracing them,et imponens manus super illos, and laying his hands upon them, benedicebat eos.he blessed them.
Et cum egressus esset in viam,And when he had departed on the way, procurrens quidam genu flexo ante eum,a certain one, running up and kneeling before him, asked him, rogabat eum:“Good Teacher,Magister bone, what shall I do,quid faciam ut vitam æternam percipiam?so that I may secure eternal life?”
Jesus autem dixit ei:But Jesus said to him,Quid me dicis bonum?“Why call me good?nemo bonus, nisi unus Deus.No one is good except the one God.
Præcepta nosti:You know the precepts:ne adulteres,“Do not commit adultery.ne occidas,Do not kill.ne fureris,Do not steal.ne falsum testimonium dixeris,Do not speak false testimony.ne fraudem feceris,Do not deceive.honora patrem tuum et matrem.Honor your father and mother.”
At ille respondens,But in response, ait illi:he said to him,Magister,“Teacher,hæc omnia observavi a juventute mea.all these I have observed from my youth.”
Jesus autem intuitus eum,Then Jesus, gazing at him, dilexit eum, et dixit ei:loved him, and he said to him:Unum tibi deest: vade,“One thing is lacking to you.quæcumque habes vende,Go, sell whatever you have,et da pauperibus, and give to the poor,et habebis thesaurum in cælo:and then you will have treasure in heaven.et veni,And come, sequere me.follow me.”
Qui contristatus in verbo,But he went away grieving, abiit mœrens:having been greatly saddened by the word.erat enim habens multas possessiones. For he had many possessions.
Et circumspiciens Jesus,And Jesus, ait discipulis suis:looking around,Quam difficile qui pecunias habent, said to his disciples,in regnum Dei introibunt!“How difficult it is for those who have riches to enter into the kingdom of God!”
Discipuli autem obstupescebant in verbis ejus. And the disciples were astonished at his words. At Jesus rursus respondens ait illis:But Jesus,Filioli, answering again, quam difficile est, said to them:confidentes in pecuniis,“Little sons,in regnum Dei introire!how difficult it is for those who trust in money to enter into the kingdom of God!
Facilius est camelum per foramen acus transire,It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, quam divitem intrare in regnum Dei.than for the rich to enter into the kingdom of God.”
Qui magis admirabantur,And they wondered even more, dicentes ad semetipsos:saying among themselves,Et quis potest salvus fieri?“Who, then, can be saved?”
Et intuens illos Jesus,And Jesus, gazing at them, ait:said:Apud homines impossibile est,“With men it is impossible;sed non apud Deum:but not with God.omnia enim possibilia sunt apud Deum. For with God all things are possible.”
Et cœpit ei Petrus dicere:And Peter began to say to him,Ecce nos dimisimus omnia,“Behold,et secuti sumus te.we have left all things and have followed you.”
Respondens Jesus,In response,ait:Jesus said:Amen dico vobis:“Amen I say to you,Nemo est qui reliquerit domum,There is no one who has left behind house,aut fratres,or brothers,aut sorores,or sisters,aut patrem,or father,aut matrem,or mother,aut filios,or children,aut agros propter meor land,et propter Evangelium,for my sake and for the Gospel,
qui non accipiat centies tantum,who will not receive one hundred times as much,nunc in tempore hoc:now in this time:domos,houses,et fratres,and brothers,et sorores,and sisters,et matres,and mothers,et filios,and children,et agros,and land,cum persecutionibus,with persecutions,et in sæculo futuro vitam æternam.and in the future age eternal life.
Multi autem erunt primi novissimi,But many of the first shall be last,et novissimi primi.and the last shall be first.”
Erant autem in via ascendentes Jerosolymam:Now they were on the way ascending to Jerusalem.et præcedebat illos Jesus, et stupebant:And Jesus went ahead of them, and they were astonished.et sequentes timebant. And those following him were afraid.Et assumens iterum duodecim,And again, taking aside the twelve,cœpit illis dicere quæ essent ei eventura.he began to tell them what was about to happen to him.
Quia ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam,“For behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,et Filius hominis tradetur principibus sacerdotum, and the Son of man will be handed over to the leaders of the priests,et scribis, et senioribus, and to the scribes, and the elders.et damnabunt eum morte,And they will condemn him to death,et tradent eum gentibus:and they will hand him over to the Gentiles.
et illudent ei, et conspuent eum,And they will mock him, and spit on him,et flagellabunt eum,and scourge him, and put him to death.et interficient eum:And on the third day,et tertia die resurget.he will rise again.”
Et accedunt ad eum Jacobus et Joannes filii Zebedæi,And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, drew near to him, dicentes:saying,Magister,“Teacher, volumus ut quodcumque petierimus,we wish that whatever we will ask, facias nobis.you would do for us.”
At ille dixit eis:But he said to them,Quid vultis ut faciam vobis?“What do you want me to do for you?”
Et dixerunt:And they said,Da nobis ut unus ad dexteram tuam,“Grant to us that we may sit,et alius ad sinistram tuam sedeamus in gloria tua.one at your right and the other at your left, in your glory.”
Jesus autem ait eis:But Jesus said to them:Nescitis quid petatis:“You do not know what you are asking.potestis bibere calicem, quem ego bibo,Are you able to drink from the chalice from which I drink, aut baptismo, quo ego baptizor, baptizari?or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am to be baptized?”
At illi dixerunt ei:But they said to him,Possumus.“We can.”Jesus autem ait eis:Then Jesus said to them:Calicem quidem, quem ego bibo,“Indeed, you shall drink from the chalice, bibetis;from which I drink;et baptismo, quo ego baptizor, and you shall be baptized with the baptism, baptizabimini:with which I am to be baptized.
sedere autem ad dexteram meam,But to sit at my right, vel ad sinistram,or at my left, non est meum dare vobis,is not mine to give to you,sed quibus paratum est.but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
Et audientes decem,And the ten,cœperunt indignari de Jacoboupon hearing this,et Joanne.began to be indignant toward James and John.
Jesus autem vocans eos,But Jesus, calling them, ait illis:said to them:Scitis quia hi, qui videntur principari gentibus, dominantur eis:“You know that those who seem to be leaders among the Gentiles dominate them,et principes eorum potestatem habent ipsorum.and their leaders exercise authority over them.
Non ita est autem in vobis,But it is not to be this way among you.sed quicumque voluerit fieri major,Instead,erit vester minister:whoever would become greater shall be your minister;
et quicumque voluerit in vobis primus esse, erit omnium servus.and whoever will be first among you shall be the servant of all.
NamSo,et Filius hominis non venit ut ministraretur ei,too, sed ut ministraret, the Son of man has not come so that they would minister to him,et daret animam suam redemptionem pro multis.but so that he would minister and would give his life as a redemption for many.”
Et veniunt Jericho:And they went to Jericho.et proficiscente eo de Jericho,And as he was setting out from Jericho with his disciples and a very numerous multitude,et discipulis ejus,Bartimaeus,et plurima multitudine, the son of Timaeus, filius Timæi Bartimæus cæcus,a blind man, sedebat juxta viam mendicans.sat begging beside the way.
Qui cum audisset quia Jesus Nazarenus est,And when he had heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,cœpit clamare,he began to cry out and to say,et dicere:“Jesus,Jesu fili David,Son of David, miserere mei.take pity on me.”
Et comminabantur ei multi ut taceret. And many admonished him to be quiet. At ille multo magis clamabat:But he cried out all the more,Fili David,“Son of David, miserere mei.take pity on me.”
Et stans Jesus præcepit illum vocari. And Jesus, standing still, instructed him to be called.Et vocant cæcum, dicentes ei:And they called the blind man, saying to him:Animæquior esto:“Be at peace. Arise.surge, vocat te.He is calling you.”
Qui projecto vestimento suo exiliens,And casting aside his garment, venit ad eum.he leapt up and went to him.
Et respondens Jesus dixit illi:And in response, Jesus said to him, “What do you want,Quid tibi vis faciam?that I should do for you?”Cæcus autem dixit ei:And the blind man said to him,Rabboni, ut videam.“Master, that I may see.”
Jesus autem ait illi:Then Jesus said to him,Vade,“Go,fides tua te salvum fecit.your faith has made you whole.”Et confestim vidit,And immediately he saw,et sequebatur eum in via.and he followed him on the way.
