Et cum appropinquarent JerosolymæAnd as they were approaching Jerusalem and Bethania,et Bethaniæ ad montem Olivarum, toward the mount of Olives, mittit duos ex discipulis suis,he sent two of his disciples,
et ait illis:and he said to them:Ite in castellum, quod contra vos est,“Go into the village that is opposite you,et statim introëuntes illuc, and immediately upon entering there, invenietis pullum ligatum, you will find a colt tied, super quem nemo adhuc hominum sedit:on which no man has yet sat.solvite illum, et adducite.Release him and bring him.
Et si quis vobis dixerit:And if anyone will say to you:Quid facitis? dicite,‘What are you doing?’quia Domino necessarius est:Say that the Lord has need of him.et continuo illum dimittet huc.And he will immediately send him here.”
Et abeuntes invenerunt pullum ligatum ante januam foris in bivio:And going out, they found the colt tied before the outer gate, at the meeting of two ways.et solvunt eum.And they untied him.
Et quidam de illic stantibus dicebant illis:And some of those who were standing there said to them,Quid facitis solventes pullum?“What are you doing by releasing the colt?”
Qui dixerunt eis sicut præceperat illis Jesus,And they spoke to them just as Jesus had instructed them.et dimiserunt eis.And they permitted them.
Et duxerunt pullum ad Jesum:And they led the colt to Jesus.et imponunt illi vestimenta sua,And they placed their garments on it;et sedit super eum.and he sat upon it.
Multi autem vestimenta sua straverunt in via:Then many spread their garments along the way;alii autem frondes cædebant de arboribus, but others cut down leafy branches from treeset sternebant in via.and scattered them on the way.
Et qui præibant,And those who went ahead,et qui sequebantur, and those who followed, clamabant, dicentes:cried out saying: “Hosanna!Hosanna: benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini:Blessed is he who has arrived in the name of the Lord.
benedictum quod venit regnum patris nostri David:Blessed is the advent of the kingdom of our father David.hosanna in excelsis.Hosanna in the highest!”
Et introivit Jerosolymam in templum:And he entered into Jerusalem, into the temple.et circumspectis omnibus,And having looked around at everything, cum jam vespera esset hora, since it was now the evening hour, exiit in Bethaniam cum duodecim.he went out to Bethania with the twelve.
Et alia die cum exirent a Bethania,And the next day, as they were departing from Bethania, esuriit.he was hungry.
Cumque vidisset a longe ficum habentem folia,And when he had seen a fig tree with leaves in the distance, venit si quid forte inveniret in ea:he went to it, in case he might find something on it.et cum venisset ad eam,And when he had gone to it,nihil invenit præter folia:he found nothing but leaves.non enim erat tempus ficorum. For it was not the season for figs.
Et respondens dixit ei:And in response, he said to it,Jam non amplius in æternum ex te fructum quisquam manducet.“From now on and forever, may no one eat fruit from you again!”Et audiebant discipuli ejus. And his disciples heard this.
Et veniunt in Jerosolymam. And they went to Jerusalem.Et cum introisset in templum,And when he had entered into the temple,cœpit ejicere vendentes et ementes in templo:he began to cast out the sellers and the buyers in the temple.et mensas numulariorum, et cathedras vendentium columbas evertit:And he overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the chairs of the vendors of doves.
et non sinebat ut quisquam transferret vas per templum:And he would not permit anyone to carry goods through the temple.
et docebat, dicens eis:And he taught them, saying:Nonne scriptum est:“Is it not written:Quia domus mea, domus orationis vocabitur omnibus gentibus?‘For my house shall be called the house of prayer for all nations?’vos autem fecistis eam speluncam latronum. But you have made it into a den of robbers.”
Quo audito principes sacerdotum et scribæ,And when the leaders of the priests, and the scribes,quærebant quomodo eum perderent: timebant enim eum,had heard this, they sought a means by which they might destroy him.quoniam universa turba admirabatur super doctrina ejus. For they feared him, because the entire multitude was in admiration over his doctrine.
Et cum vespera facta esset,And when evening had arrived, egrediebatur de civitate.he departed from the city.
Et cum mane transirent,And when they passed by in the morning, viderunt ficum aridam factam a radicibus.they saw that the fig tree had dried up from the roots.
Et recordatus Petrus,And Peter, dixit ei:remembering,Rabbi, said to him, ecce ficus,“Master, cui maledixisti, behold, aruit.the fig tree that you cursed has withered.”
Et respondens Jesus ait illis:And in response, Jesus said to them:Habete fidem Dei.“Have the faith of God.
Amen dico vobis,Amen I say to you, quia quicumque dixerit huic monti:that whoever will say to this mountain,Tollere,‘Be taken upet mittere in mare, and cast into the sea,’et non hæsitaverit in corde suo,and who will not have hesitated in his heart, sed crediderit, but will have believed:quia quodcumque dixerit fiat, then whatever he has said be done, fiet ei.it shall be done for him.
Propterea dico vobis,For this reason, I say to you, omnia quæcumque orantes petitis, all things whatsoever that you ask for when praying:credite quia accipietis, believe that you will receive them,et evenient vobis.and they will happen for you.
Et cum stabitis ad orandum,And when you stand to pray, dimittite si quid habetis adversus aliquem:if you hold anything against anyone, utforgive them,et Pater vester,so that your Father, qui in cælis est,who is in heaven, dimittat vobis peccata vestra.may also forgive you your sins.
Quod si vos non dimiseritis:But if you will not forgive, nec Pater vester, neither will your Father, qui in cælis est,who is in heaven, dimittet vobis peccata vestra.forgive you your sins.”
Et veniunt rursus Jerosolymam. And they went again to Jerusalem.Et cum ambularet in templo,And when he was walking in the temple, accedunt ad eum summi sacerdotes, the leaders of the priests,et scribæ,and the scribes,et seniores:and the elders approached him.
et dicunt ei:And they said to him:In qua potestate hæc facis?“By what authority do you do these things?et quis dedit tibi hanc potestatem ut ista facias? And who has given you this authority, so that you would do these things?”
Jesus autem respondens,But in response, ait illis:Jesus said to them:Interrogabo vos et ego unum verbum,“I also will ask you one word,et respondete mihi:and if you answer me,et dicam vobis in qua potestate hæc faciam.I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
Baptismus Joannis,The baptism of John:de cælo erat, was it from heavenan ex hominibus?or from men?Respondete mihi.Answer me.”
At illi cogitabant secum,But they discussed it among themselves, dicentes:saying:Si dixerimus:“If we say,De cælo,‘From heaven,’dicet:he will say,Quare ergo non credidistis ei?‘Then why did you not believe him?’
Si dixerimus:If we say,Ex hominibus,‘From men,’timemus populum:we fear the people.omnes enim habebant Joannem quia vere propheta esset. For they all hold that John was a true prophet.”
Et respondentes dicunt Jesu:And answering, they said to Jesus,Nescimus.“We do not know.”Et respondens Jesus ait illis:And in response, Jesus said to them,Neque ego dico vobis in qua potestate hæc faciam.“Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
