Igitur vociferans omnis turba flevit nocte illa,And so, crying out, the entire crowd wept throughout that night.

et murmurati sunt contra Moysen et Aaron cuncti filii Israël,And all the sons of Israel were murmuring against Moses and Aaron, dicentes:saying:

Utinam mortui essemus in Ægypto:“If only we had died in Egypt,” and,et in hac vasta solitudine utinam pereamus,“If only we would perish in this vast wilderness,”et non inducat nos Dominus in terram istam, and, “May the Lord not lead us into this land,ne cadamus gladio, lest we fall by the sword,et uxores ac liberi nostri ducantur captivi.and our wives, as well as our children, be led away as captives.Nonne melius est reverti in Ægyptum? Is it not better to return to Egypt?”

Dixeruntque alter ad alterum:And they said to one another,Constituamus nobis ducem,“Let us appoint our leader,et revertamur in Ægyptum.and so return to Egypt.”

Quo audito,And when Moses and Aaron heard this,Moyses et Aaron ceciderunt proni in terram coram omni multitudine filiorum Israël.they fell prone on the ground in the sight of the multitude of the sons of Israel.

At vero Josue filius NunYet truly,et Caleb filius Jephone,Joshua the son of Nun,quiand Caleb the son of Jephunneh,et ipsi lustraverant terram, who themselves had also viewed the land, sciderunt vestimenta sua, tore their garments,

et ad omnem multitudinem filiorum Israël locuti sunt:and they said to the entire multitude of the sons of Israel:Terra, quam circuivimus, valde bona est.“The land that we circled through is very good.

Si propitius fuerit Dominus,If the Lord will be gracious to us,inducet nos in eam,he will lead us into it,et tradet humum lacte et melle manantem.and he will give us the land flowing with milk and honey.

Nolite rebelles esse contra Dominum:Do not choose to be rebellious against the Lord.neque timeatis populum terræ hujus,And do not fear the people of this land, quia sicut panem ita eos possumus devorare.for, like bread, so are we able to devour them.Recessit ab eis omne præsidium:All protection has withdrawn from them.Dominus nobiscum est,The Lord is with us.nolite metuere.Do not be afraid.”

Cumque clamaret omnis multitudo,And when the entire multitude cried out,et lapidibus eos vellet opprimere, and they wanted to crush them with stones, apparuit gloria Domini super tectum fœderis cunctis filiis Israël.the glory of the Lord appeared, over the roof of the covenant, to all the sons of Israel.

Et dixit Dominus ad Moysen:And the Lord said to Moses:Usquequo detrahet mihi populus iste?“How long will this people disparage me?quousque non credent mihi,How long will they refuse to believe me,in omnibus signis quæ feci coram eis?despite all the signs that I have wrought before them?

Feriam igitur eos pestilentia,Therefore, I will strike them with a pestilence, atque consumam: te autem faciam principem super gentem magnam, and so I will consume them. But you I will make the ruler over a great nation,et fortiorem quam hæc est.and one which is mightier than this one.”

Et ait Moyses ad Dominum:And Moses said to the Lord:Ut audiant Ægyptii,“But then the Egyptians,de quorum medio eduxisti populum istum, from whose midst you led out this people,

et habitatores terræ hujus, and the inhabitants of this land, qui audierunt quod tu,who have heard that you,Domine,O Lord,in populo isto sis,are among this people,et facie videaris ad faciem, and that you are seen face to face,et nubes tua protegat illos, and that your cloud protects them,et in columna nubis præcedas eos per diem, and that you go before them with a column of cloud by day,et in columna ignis per noctem:and a column of fire by night,

quod occideris tantam multitudinem quasi unum hominem, may hear that you have killed so great a multitude, as if they were one man,et dicant:and they may say:

Non poterat introducere populum in terram pro qua juraverat:‘He was not able to lead the people into the land about which he had sworn.idcirco occidit eos in solitudine? Therefore, he slew them in the wilderness.’

Magnificetur ergo fortitudo Domini sicut jurasti,Therefore, may the strength of the Lord be magnified, just as you swore, dicens:saying:

Dominus patiens et multæ misericordiæ,‘The Lord is patient and full of mercy, auferens iniquitatem et scelera, taking away iniquity and wickedness, nullumque innoxium derelinquens, and forsaking no one who is harmless.qui visitas peccata patrum in filios in tertiam et quartam generationem. He visits the sins of the fathers upon the sons, to the third and fourth generation.’

Dimitte,Forgive, obsecro,I beg you, peccatum populi hujus secundum magnitudinem misericordiæ tuæ,the sins of this people, according to the greatness of your mercy, sicut propitius fuisti egredientibus de Ægypto usque ad locum istum.just as you have been gracious to them in their journey from Egypt to this place.”

Dixitque Dominus:And the Lord said:Dimisi juxta verbum tuum.“I have forgiven them according to your word.

Vivo ego:Also, as I live,et implebitur gloria Domini universa terra.the entire world shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.

Attamen omnes homines qui viderunt majestatem meam,And yet,et signa quæ feci in Ægyptoall the men who have seen my majesty,et in solitudine, and the signs that I have wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness,et tentaverunt me jam per decem vices, and who have tested me ten times already, nec obedierunt voci meæ,and yet have not obeyed my voice,

non videbunt terram pro qua juravi patribus eorum, these shall not see the land, nec quisquam ex illis qui detraxit mihi, about which I swore to their fathers, intuebitur eam.neither shall any of those who detracted me gaze upon it.

Servum meum Caleb,My servant Caleb, who,qui plenus alio spiritu secutus est me,being full of another spirit, has followed me,inducam in terram hanc, quam circuivit;I will lead into this land, through which he has wandered,et semen ejus possidebit eam.and his offspring shall possess it.

Quoniam AmalecitesFor the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys.et Chananæus habitant in vallibus.Tomorrow,Cras movete castra, move the camp and return into the wilderness,et revertimini in solitudinem per viam maris Rubri.by the way of the Red Sea.”

Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron,And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, dicens:saying:

Usquequo multitudo hæc pessima murmurat contra me?“How long will this very wicked multitude murmur against me?querelas filiorum Israël audivi.I have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel.

Dic ergo eis:Therefore, say to them:Vivo ego,As I live, ait Dominus:says the Lord, sicut locuti estis audiente me,as you spoke in my hearing, sic faciam vobis.so will I do to you.

In solitudine hac jacebunt cadavera vestra. In the wilderness,Omnes qui numerati estis a viginti annishere shall your carcasses lie.et supra,All you who were numbered from twenty years and above,et murmurastis contra me,and who have murmured against me,

non intrabitis terram, you shall not enter into the land, super quam levavi manum meam ut habitare vos facerem, over which I lifted up my hand to cause you to live there,præter Caleb filium Jephone, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh,et Josue filium Nun.and Joshua the son of Nun.

Parvulos autem vestros,But your little ones,de quibus dixistis quod prædæ hostibus forent, about whom you said that they would be a prey to the enemies, introducam,I will lead them in,ut videant terram, quæ vobis displicuit.so that they may see the land that has displeased you.

Vestra cadavera jacebunt in solitudine.Your carcasses shall lie in the wilderness.

Filii vestri erunt vagi in deserto annis quadraginta,Your sons shall wander in the desert for forty years,et portabunt fornicationem vestram, and they shall bear your fornication, donec consumantur cadavera patrum in deserto, until the carcasses of their fathers are consumed in the desert.

juxta numerum quadraginta dierum,According to the number of the forty days, quibus considerastis terram:during which you examined the land, annus pro die imputabitur.one year shall be charged for each day.Et quadraginta annis recipietis iniquitates vestras,And so, for forty years you shall take back your iniquities,et scietis ultionem meam:and you shall know my retribution.

quoniam sicut locutus sum,For just as I have spoken, ita faciam omni multitudini huic pessimæ,so shall I do, to this entire most wicked multitude,quæ consurrexit adversum me:which has risen up together against me.in solitudine hac deficiet, et morietur. In the wilderness, here shall it fade away and die.”

Igitur omnes viri,Therefore, all the men, quos miserat Moyses ad contemplandam terram, whom Moses had sent to contemplate the land, and who,et qui reversi murmurare fecerant contra eum omnem multitudinem, having returned, had caused the entire multitude to murmur against him, detrahentes terræ quod esset mala, disparaging the land as if it were evil,

mortui sunt atque percussi in conspectu Domini.suffered death and were struck down in the sight of the Lord.

Josue autem filius Nun,But only Joshua the son of Nun,et Caleb filius Jephone, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive, vixerunt ex omnibus qui perrexerant ad considerandam terram.out of all those who had journeyed to examine the land.

Locutusque est Moyses universa verba hæc ad omnes filios Israël,And Moses spoke all these words to all the sons of Israel,et luxit populus nimis.and the people mourned exceedingly.

Et ecce mane primo surgentes ascenderunt verticem montis,And behold, rising up at first light, they climbed to the top of the mountain, atque dixerunt:and they said,Parati sumus ascendere ad locum,“We are prepared to ascend to the place,de quo Dominus locutus est:about which the Lord has spoken, quia peccavimus.for we have sinned.”

Quibus Moyses: Cur,And Moses said to them:inquit, transgredimini verbum Domini,“Why do you transgress the word of the Lord, quod vobis non cedet in prosperum?merely because it will not result in prosperity for you?

nolite ascendere:Do not ascend, non enim est Dominus vobiscum:for the Lord is not with you,ne corruatis coram inimicis vestris.lest you be overthrown before your enemies.

Amalecites et Chananæus ante vos sunt,The Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, quorum gladio corruetis,by whose sword you shall be ruined,eo quod nolueritis acquiescere Domino:for you were not willing to consent to the Lord, nec erit Dominus vobiscum.and so the Lord is not with you.”

At illi contenebrati ascenderunt in verticem montis. But they, having been darkened, ascended to the top of the mountain.Arca autem testamenti Domini et Moyses non recesserunt de castris. But the ark of the testament of the Lord, and Moses, did not withdraw from the camp.

Descenditque Amalecites et Chananæus, qui habitabat in monte:And the Amalekites descended, along with those Canaanites who were living in the mountains.et percutiens eos atque concidens,And so, striking and cutting them down, persecutus est eos usque Horma.they pursued them all the way to Hormah.
