Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen,And the Lord spoke to Moses, dicens:saying:
Ulciscere prius filios Israël de Madianitis,“First, avenge the sons of Israel from the Midianites,et sic colligeris ad populum tuum.and then you shall be gathered to your people.”
Statimque Moyses: Armate,And immediately Moses said:inquit, ex vobis viros ad pugnam,“Arm the men among you for a battle, qui possint ultionem Domini expetere de Madianitis.so that they may be able to fulfill the retribution of the Lord on the Midianites.
Mille viri de singulis tribubus eligantur ex Israël qui mittantur ad bellum.Let one thousand men be chosen from each tribe of Israel, who shall be sent to war.”
Dederuntque millenos de singulis tribubus,And they gave one thousand from each tribe,id est, that is,duodecim millia expeditorum ad pugnam:twelve thousand foot soldiers for battle.
quos misit Moyses cum Phinees filio Eleazari sacerdotis,And Moses sent them with Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the priest; also, vasa quoque sancta, et tubas ad clangendum tradidit ei.he delivered to him the holy vessels, and the trumpets to sound.
Cumque pugnassent contra Madianitas atque vicissent,And when they had fought against the Midianites and had prevailed, omnes mares occiderunt, they killed all the men.
et reges eorum,And they put to death by the sword their kings:Evi,Evi,et Recem, and Rekem,et Sur,and Zur,et Hur,and Hur,et Rebe, and Reba, quinque principes gentis:the five leaders of the nation,Balaam quoque filium Beor interfecerunt gladio.and also Balaam the son of Beor.
Ceperuntque mulieres eorum,And they seized their women and little ones,et parvulos, and all their cattle, omniaque pecora, and all their goods;et cunctam supellectilem:whatever they were able to have, quidquid habere potuerant depopulati sunt:they despoiled.
tam urbes quam viculos et castella flamma consumpsit. Both their cities and their villages, as well as their fortresses, they burned.
Et tulerunt prædam,And they carried away prey from everything that they had seized,et universa quæ ceperant tam ex hominibus quam ex jumentis, both of men and of beasts.
et adduxerunt ad Moysen, et Eleazarum sacerdotem,And they led these to Moses and Eleazar the priest,et ad omnem multitudinem filiorum Israël:and to all the multitude of the sons of Israel.reliqua autem utensilia portaverunt ad castra in campestribus Moab juxta Jordanem contra Jericho. But the remainder of the articles they carried to the camp on the plains of Moab, next to the Jordan, opposite Jericho.
Egressi sunt autem Moyses et Eleazar sacerdos,Then Moses,et omnes principes synagogæ,and Eleazar the priest,in occursum eorum extra castra.and all the leaders of the assembly went out to meet them beyond the camp.
Iratusque Moyses principibus exercitus,And Moses, being angry with the leaders of the army, tribunis, and the tribunes,et centurionibus qui venerant de bello, and the centurions, who had arrived from the battle,
ait:said:Cur feminas reservastis?“Why have you spared the females?
nonne istæ sunt, quæ deceperunt filios Israël ad suggestionem Balaam,Are not these the ones who deceived the sons of Israel at the suggestion of Balaam,et prævaricari vos fecerunt in Domino super peccato Phogor, unde et percussus est populus?and who caused you betray the Lord by the sin of Peor, because of which the people also were struck down?
ergo cunctos interficite quidquid est generis masculini,Therefore, etiam in parvulis:put to death all of them:et mulieres, whatever is of the male sex,quæ noverunt viros in coitu, even among the little ones, jugulate:and cut the throats of those women who have known men by sexual relations.
puellas autem et omnes feminas virgines reservate vobis:But the young girls, and all female virgins, reserve for yourselves.
et manete extra castra septem diebus. And remain beyond the camp for seven days.Qui occiderit hominem,Whoever has killed a man,vel occisum tetigerit,or who has touched one that was killed, lustrabitur die tertio et septimo.shall be purified on the third day and on the seventh day.
Et de omni præda,And all of the spoils, sive vestimentum fuerit, whether it is a garment, sive vas,or a vessel,et aliquid in utensilia præparatum,or another useful thing,de caprarum pellibus, made from the peltset pilis,or hair of goats,et ligno,or from wood, expiabitur.shall be expiated.”
Eleazar quoque sacerdos ad viros exercitus, qui pugnaverunt,Likewise, Eleazar the priest spoke in this manner to the men of the army who had fought:sic locutus est: Hoc est præceptum legis,“This is the precept of the law, quod mandavit Dominus Moysi:which the Lord has commanded Moses:
aurum,Gold,et argentum,and silver,et æs,and brass,et ferrum,and iron,et plumbum,and lead,et stannum,and tin,
et omne, quod potest transire per flammas, and all that may be able to pass through fire, igne purgabitur:shall be purified by fire.quidquid autem ignem non potest sustinere, aqua expiationis sanctificabitur:But whatever is not able to sustain fire shall be sanctified with the waters of expiation.
et lavabitis vestimenta vestra die septimo,And you shall wash your garments on the seventh day, and,et purificati postea castra intrabitis.after having been purified, you shall enter the camp.”
Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen:And the Lord also said to Moses:
Tollite summam eorum quæ capta sunt,“Take the sum of those things which were captured,ab homine usque ad pecus, from man even to beast,tu et Eleazar sacerdos et principes vulgi:you and Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the common people.
dividesque ex æquo prædam inter eos qui pugnaverunt egressique sunt ad bellum,And you shall divide the prey equally, among those who went out to war and fought,et inter omnem reliquam multitudinem.and among the remainder of the multitude.
Et separabis partem Domino ab his qui pugnaverunt et fuerunt in bello,And you shall separate a portion for the Lord from the portion of those who fought and were in the battle:unam animam de quingentis, one soul out of five hundred, tam ex hominibus quam ex bobus et asinis et ovibus,as much from humans, as from oxen and donkeys and sheep.
et dabis eam Eleazaro sacerdoti,And you shall give it to Eleazar the priest, quia primitiæ Domini sunt.because these are the first-fruits of the Lord.
Ex media quoque parte filiorum Israël accipies quinquagesimum caput hominum,Likewise, from the half of the portion belonging to the sons of Israel, you shall receive the fiftieth head of humans,et boum, and of oxen,et asinorum, and donkeys,et ovium, and sheep, cunctorum animantium, and of all living things,et dabis ea Levitis, qui excubant in custodiis tabernaculi Domini.and you shall give these to the Levites who stand watch over the care of the tabernacle of the Lord.”
Feceruntque Moyses et Eleazar sicut præceperat Dominus. And Moses and Eleazar did just as the Lord had instructed.
Fuit autem præda, quam exercitus ceperat, ovium sexcenta septuaginta quinque millia,Now the prey which the army had seized was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,
boum septuaginta duo millia,seventy-two thousand oxen,
asinorum sexaginta millia et mille:sixty-one thousand donkeys,
animæ hominum sexus feminei, and thirty-two thousand human lives,quæ non cognoverant viros,of the female sex, triginta duo millia.who had not known men.
Dataque est media pars his qui in prælio fuerant,And one half of the portion was given to those who had been in the battle:ovium trecenta triginta septem millia quingentæ:three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep.
e quibus in partem Domini supputatæ sunt oves sexcentæ septuaginta quinque:From these, for the portion of the Lord, there were accounted: six hundred seventy-five sheep;
et de bobus triginta sex millibus,and from the thirty-six thousand oxen,boves septuaginta et duo:seventy-two oxen;
de asinis triginta millibus quingentis, from the thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, asini sexaginta unus:sixty-one donkeys.
de animabus hominum sedecim millibus,From the sixteen thousand human souls, cesserunt in partem Domini triginta duæ animæ.there fell to the portion of the Lord thirty-two souls.
Tradiditque Moyses numerum primitiarum Domini Eleazaro sacerdoti,And Moses delivered the number of the first-fruits of the Lord to Eleazar the priest, sicut fuerat ei imperatum, just as had been commanded of him,
ex media parte filiorum Israël,from the one half portion belonging to the sons of Israel, quam separaverat his qui in prælio fuerant.which he had separated from the portion of those who had been in the battle.
De media vero parte,Yet truly,quæ contigerat reliquæ multitudini, from the one half portion which fell to the remainder of the multitude,id est, that is,de ovibus trecentis triginta septem millibus quingentis, from the three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,
et de bobus triginta sex millibus, and from the thirty-six thousand oxen,
et de asinis triginta millibus quingentis, and from the thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,
et de hominibus sedecim millibus, and from the sixteen thousand persons,
tulit Moyses quinquagesimum caput,Moses took the fiftieth head,et dedit Levitis, qui excubabant in tabernaculo Domini, and gave it to the Levites who stand watch at the tabernacle of the Lord, sicut præceperat Dominus.just as the Lord had instructed.
Cumque accessissent principes exercitus ad Moysen,And when the leaders of the army,et tribuni, and the tribunes, centurionesque, and the centurions had approached Moses, dixerunt:they said:
Nos servi tui recensuimus numerum pugnatorum,“We, your servants, have taken a census of the number of the fighting men, quos habuimus sub manu nostra:whom we had under our hand,et ne unus quidem defuit.and indeed not one was lacking.
Ob hanc causam offerimus in donariis Domini singuli quod in præda auri potuimus invenire,For this reason, we offer as gifts to the Lord whatever gold each one was able to find amid the spoils, periscelides et armillas,in anklets and arm bands, annulos et dextralia, rings and bracelets,ac murænulas, and little chains,ut depreceris pro nobis Dominum.so that you may intercede for us to the Lord.”
Susceperuntque Moyses et Eleazar sacerdos omne aurum in diversis speciebus,And Moses and Eleazar the priest received all the gold in its various kinds,
pondo sedecim millia septingentos quinquaginta siclos, weighing sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels,a tribunis et centurionibus.from the tribunes and the centurions.
Unusquisque enim quod in præda rapuerat, suum erat. For whatever each one had taken away in the spoils was his own.
Et susceptum intulerunt in tabernaculum testimonii,And having been accepted, they took it into the tabernacle of the testimony,in monimentum filiorum Israël coram Domino.as a memorial of the sons of Israel before the Lord.
