Filii autem Ruben et Gad habebant pecora multa,Now the sons of Ruben and of Gad had many herds,et erat illis in jumentis infinita substantia.and their substance in cattle was inestimable.Cumque vidissent Jazer et Galaad aptas animalibus alendis terras,And when they had seen that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for feeding animals,
venerunt ad Moysen, they went to Moses,et ad Elezarum sacerdotem, and to Eleazar the priestet principes multitudinis, and the leaders of the multitude, atque dixerunt:and they said:
Ataroth,“Ataroth,et Dibon,and Dibon,et Jazer,and Jazer,et Nemra,and Nimrah,Hesebon,Heshbon,et Eleale,and Elealeh,et Saban,and Sebam,et Nebo,and Nebo,et Beon,and Beon,
terra, the land, quam percussit Dominus in conspectu filiorum Israël,which the Lord has struck in the sight of the sons of Israel, regio uberrima est ad pastum animalium:is a very fertile region for pasturing animals.et nos servi tui habemus jumenta plurima,And we, your servants, have very many cattle.
precamurque si invenimus gratiam coram te,And so we beseech you, if we have found favor before you,ut des nobis famulis tuis eam in possessionem, that you give it to us, your subjects, as a possession, nec facias nos transire Jordanem.and that you not cause us cross the Jordan.”
Quibus respondit Moyses:And Moses answered them:Numquid fratres vestri ibunt ad pugnam,“Should your brothers go to battle,et vos hic sedebitis?while you sit here?
cur subvertitis mentes filiorum Israël,Why do you subvert the minds of the sons of Israel,ne transire audeant in locum, quem eis daturus est Dominus?so that they might not dare to cross into the place which the Lord will give to them?
Nonne ita egerunt patres vestri,Did not your fathers act in the same way, quando misi de Cadesbarne ad explorandam terram?when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to explore the land?
cumque venissent usque ad Vallem botri,And when they had gone all the way to the Valley of the Cluster of Grapes, lustrata omni regione, having viewed the entire region, subverterunt cor filiorum Israël,they subverted the hearts of the sons of Israel,ut non intrarent fines, quos eis Dominus dedit.so that they would not enter into the parts that the Lord gave to them.
Qui iratus juravit,And being angry, the Lord swore an oath, dicens:saying:
Si videbunt homines isti,‘These men,qui ascenderunt ex Ægypto a viginti anniswho ascended out of Egypt,et supra, from twenty years and above, terram, will not see the land, quam sub juramento pollicitus sum Abraham, which I have promised under an oath to Abraham,Isaac,Isaac,et Jacob:and Jacob.et noluerunt sequi me,For they were not willing to follow me,
præter Caleb filium Jephone Cenezæum,except Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite,et Josue filium Nun:and Joshua the son of Nun;isti impleverunt voluntatem meam.these have fulfilled my will.’
Iratusque Dominus adversum Israël,And the Lord, being angry against Israel, circumduxit eum per desertum quadraginta annis, donec consumeretur universa generatio, led them in a course through the desert for forty years, until the entire generation,quæ fecerat malum in conspectu ejus.which had done evil in his sight, was consumed.
Et ecce,And behold,”inquit,he said, vos surrexistis pro patribus vestris,“you have risen up in the place of your fathers, incrementa et alumni hominum peccatorum, the offshoots and the nurslings of sinful men,ut augeretis furorem Domini contra Israël.in order to augment the fury of the Lord against Israel.
Quod si nolueritis sequi eum,But if you are not willing to follow him,in solitudine populum derelinquet,he will leave the people behind in the wilderness,et vos causa eritis necis omnium.and you will have been the cause of all our deaths.”
At illi prope accedentes,But approaching closer, dixerunt:they said:Caulas ovium fabricabimus,“We will manufacture sheep pens and cattle stalls,et stabula jumentorum,as well as fortified cities, parvulis quoque nostris urbes munitas:for our little ones.
nos autem ipsi armati et accincti pergemus ad prælium ante filios Israël,But we ourselves will continue on, armed and girded for battle, before the sons of Israel, donec introducamus eos ad loca sua.until we lead them to their places.Parvuli nostri,Our little ones,et quidquid habere possumus, and whatever we may be able to have, erunt in urbibus muratis, shall be in walled cities, propter habitatorum insidias.because of the treachery of the inhabitants.
Non revertemur in domos nostras,We will not return to our houses, usque dum possideant filii Israël hæreditatem suam:even until the sons of Israel may possess their inheritance.
nec quidquam quæremus trans Jordanem,Neither will we seek anything across the Jordan, quia jam habemus nostram possessionem in orientali ejus plaga.because we already have our possession on its eastern side.”
Quibus Moyses ait:And Moses said to them:Si facitis quod promittitis,“If you accomplish what you have promised, expediti pergite coram Domino ad pugnam:you may go out, equipped for battle, before the Lord.
et omnis vir bellator armatus Jordanem transeat,And let every fighting man cross over the Jordan, donec subvertat Dominus inimicos suos, until the Lord overthrows his enemies,
et subjiciatur ei omnis terra:and all the land is subjected to him.tunc eritis inculpabiles apud Dominum et apud Israël,Then you will be guiltless with the Lord and with Israel,et obtinebitis regiones, quas vultis, coram Domino.and you will obtain the regions which you desire before the Lord.
Sin autem quod dicitis,But if you do not do what you have said, non feceritis,no one could doubt that you will have sinned against God.nulli dubium est quin peccetis in Deum:And know this:et scitote quoniam peccatum vestrum apprehendet vos.your sin shall overtake you.
Ædificate ergo urbes parvulis vestris,Therefore, build cities for your little ones,et caulas, et stabula ovibus ac jumentis:and pens and stables for your sheep and cattle;et quod polliciti estis, implete.and fulfill what you have promised.”
Dixeruntque filii Gad et Ruben ad Moysen:And the sons of Gad and of Ruben said to Moses:Servi tui sumus:“We are your servants, faciemus quod jubet dominus noster.we shall do what you, our ruler, orders.
Parvulos nostros,We will leave behind our little ones,et mulieres, and our wives,et pecora, and the sheep and cattle,ac jumenta relinquemus in urbibus Galaad:in the cities of Gilead.
nos autem famuli tui omnes expediti pergemus ad bellum, sicut tu, domine, loqueris. And we, your servants, all well-equipped, will go forth to battle, just as you, our ruler, has spoken.”
Præcepit ergo Moyses Eleazaro sacerdoti,Therefore, Moses instructed Eleazar the priest,et Josue filio Nun,and Joshua the son of Nun,et principibus familiarum per tribus Israël,and the princes of the families throughout the tribes of Israel,et dixit ad eos:and he said to them:
Si transierint filii Gad“If the sons of Gad and the sons of Ruben cross over the Jordan with you,et filii Ruben vobiscum Jordanem omnes armati ad bellum coram Domino, all armed for war before the Lord,et vobis fuerit terra subjecta, and if the land becomes subject to you, date eis Galaad in possessionem.give them Gilead as a possession.
Sin autem noluerint transire armati vobiscum in terram Chanaan,But if they are not willing to cross with you, armed, into the land of Canaan, inter vos habitandi accipiant loca.then let them receive places among you for their dwellings.”
Responderuntque filii Gad et filii Ruben:And the sons of Gad and the sons of Ruben responded:Sicut locutus est Dominus servis suis,“Just as the Lord has spoken to his servants, ita faciemus:so shall we do.
ipsi armati pergemus coram Domino in terram Chanaan,We will go forth, armed, before the Lord into the land of Canaan;et possessionem jam suscepisse nos confitemur trans Jordanem.and we acknowledge that we have already received our possession across the Jordan.”
Dedit itaque Moyses filiis Gad et Ruben,And so, Moses gave to the sons of Gad and of Ruben,et dimidiæ tribui Manasse filii Joseph, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, the son of Joseph, regnum Sehon regis Amorrhæi,the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites,et regnum Og regis Basan, and the kingdom of Og,et terram eorum cum urbibus suis per circuitum.king of Bashan, and their land with its surrounding cities.
Igitur exstruxerunt filii Gad,Therefore,Dibon, the sons of Gad built up Dibon,et Ataroth, and Ataroth,et Aroër,and Aroer,
et Etroth,and Atrothet Sophan,and Shophan,et Jazer,and Jazer,et Jegbaa,and Jogbehah,
et Bethnemra, and Beth-Nimrah,et Betharan, and Beth-Haran,urbes munitas, et caulas pecoribus suis.as fortified cities with pens for their cattle.
Filii vero Ruben ædificaverunt Hesebon,Yet truly, the sons of Ruben built up Heshbon,et Eleale, and Elealeh,et Cariathaim, and Kiriathaim,
et Nabo, and Nebo,et Baalmeon versis nominibus, Sabama quoque:and Baal-meon (their names having been changed) and Sibmah, imponentes vocabula urbibus, quas exstruxerunt.appointing names for the cities which they had built.
Porro filii Machir filii Manasse,Moreover, the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, perrexerunt in Galaad, continued on within Gilead,et vastaverunt eam interfecto Amorrhæo habitatore ejus.and they devastated it, putting to death its inhabitant, the Amorite.
Dedit ergo Moyses terram Galaad Machir filio Manasse,Therefore, Moses gave the land of Gilead to Machir, the son of Manasseh, qui habitavit in ea.and he lived in it.
Jair autem filius Manasse abiit,But Jair, the son of Manasseh,et occupavit vicos ejus, went out and occupied its villages, quos appellavit Havoth Jair, which he called Havoth Jair, that is,id est, Villas Jair.the Villages of Jair.
Nobe quoque perrexit, et apprehendit Chanath cum viculis suis:Likewise, Nobah went forth and captured Kenath with its villages.vocavitque eam ex nomine suo Nobe. And he called it by his own name, Nobah.
