Cum autem habitaret David in domo sua,Now when David was living in his house, dixit ad Nathan prophetam:he said to the prophet Nathan:Ecce ego habito in domo cedrina:“Behold, I live in a house of cedar.arca autem fœderis Domini sub pellibus est.But the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under tent skins.”

Et ait Nathan ad David:And Nathan said to David:Omnia quæ in corde tuo sunt, fac:“Do all that is in your heart.Deus enim tecum est.For God is with you.”

Igitur nocte illa factus est sermo Dei ad Nathan,And yet, that night the word of God came to Nathan, dicens:saying:

Vade,“Go,et loquere David servo meo:and speak to my servant David:Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Non ædificabis tu mihi domum ad habitandum. You shall not build a house for me as a dwelling place.

Neque enim mansi in domo ex eo tempore quo eduxi Israël usque ad diem hanc:For I have not stayed in a house from the time when I led out Israel, even to this day. Instead, sed fui semper mutans loca tabernaculi, et in tentorioI have been continually changing places, in a tabernacle and tent,

manens cum omni Israël.dwelling with all of Israel.Numquid locutus sum saltem uni judicum Israël,When did I ever speak to any one at all, quibus præceperam ut pascerent populum meum, among the judges of Israel whom I placed in charge so that they might pasture my people,et dixi:saying:Quare non ædificastis mihi domum cedrinam?‘Why have you not built a house of cedar for me?’

Nunc itaque sic loqueris ad servum meum David:And so,Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:now you shall say this to my servant David:Ego tuli te,Thus says the Lord of hosts:cum in pascuis sequereris gregem,I took you when you were following the flock in the pastures,ut esses dux populi mei Israël:so that you would be the leader of my people Israel.

et fui tecum quocumque perrexisti,And I have been with you wherever you have gone.et interfeci omnes inimicos tuos coram te,And I have slain all your enemies before you, fecique tibi nomen quasi unius magnorum qui celebrantur in terra.and I have made a name for you like one of the great ones who are celebrated upon the earth.

Et dedi locum populo meo Israël:And I have given a place to my people Israel.plantabitur,They shall be planted,et habitabit in eo,and they shall live in it,et ultra non commovebitur:and they shall no longer be moved.nec filii iniquitatis atterent eos,Neither shall the sons of iniquity wear them away, sicut a principio,as in the beginning,

ex diebus quibus dedi judices populo meo Israël,from the days when I gave judges to my people Israel,et humiliavi universos inimicos tuos.and I humbled all your enemies.Annuntio ergo tibi,Therefore, quod ædificaturus sit tibi Dominus domum.I announce to you that the Lord will build a house for you.

Cumque impleveris dies tuos ut vadas ad patres tuos,And when you will have completed your days, so that you go to your fathers, suscitabo semen tuum post te,I will raise up your offspring after you, quod erit de filiis tuis:who shall be from your sons.et stabiliam regnum ejus. And I will establish his kingdom.

Ipse ædificabit mihi domum,He shall build a house for me,et firmabo solium ejus usque in æternum.and I will make firm his throne, even unto eternity.

Ego ero ei in patrem,I will be a father to him,et ipse erit mihi in filium:and he shall be a son to me.et misericordiam meam non auferam ab eo,And I will not take away my mercy from him, sicut abstuli ab eo qui ante te fuit.as I took it away from the one who was before you.

Et statuam eum in domo mea, et in regno meo usque in sempiternum:And I will station him in my house and in my kingdom, even forever.et thronus ejus erit firmissimus in perpetuum. And his throne will be very firm, in perpetuity.”

Juxta omnia verba hæc,According to all these words,et juxta universam visionem istam, and according to this entire vision, sic locutus est Nathan ad David.so did Nathan speak to David.

Cumque venisset rex David,And when king David had departed,et sedisset coram Domino, and had sat down before the Lord, dixit:he said:Quis ego sum,“Who am I,Domine Deus,O Lord God,et quæ domus mea,and what is my house,ut præstares mihi talia?that you would grant such things to me?

sed et hoc parum visum est in conspectu tuo,But even this has seemed little in your sight, ideoque locutus es super domum servi tui etiam in futurum:and therefore you have also spoken about the house of your servant even for the future.et fecisti me spectabilem super omnes homines,And you have made me a spectacle above all men,Domine Deus.O Lord God.

Quid ultra addere potest David,What more can David add,cum ita glorificaveris servum tuum, since you have so glorified your servant,et cognoveris eum?and have known him?

Domine,O Lord, propter famulum tuum juxta cor tuum fecisti omnem magnificentiam hanc, because of your servant, in accord with your own heart, you have brought about all this magnificence,et nota esse voluisti universa magnalia.and you have willed all these great things to be known.

Domine,O Lord, non est similis tui, there is no one like you.et non est alius deus absque te,And there is no other God apart from you,ex omnibus quos audivimus auribus nostris.out of all whom we have heard about with our ears.

Quis enim est alius,For what other single nation upon earth is like your people Israel,ut populus tuus Israël,to whom God reached out, gens una in terra,so that he might free them,ad quam perrexit Deus ut liberaret et faceret populum sibi, and might make a people for himself,et magnitudine sua atque terroribus ejiceret nationes a facie ejus, and by his greatnessquem de Ægypto liberarat?and terribleness cast out the nations before the face of those whom he had freed from Egypt?

Et posuisti populum tuum Israël tibi in populum usque in æternum,And you have set your people Israel to be your people, even unto eternity.et tu,And you,Domine,O Lord, factus es Deus ejus.have become their God.

Nunc igitur Domine,Now therefore, O Lord, sermo quem locutus es famulo tuo et super domum ejus confirmetur in perpetuum, let the word that you have spoken to your servant, and over his house, be confirmed in perpetuity,et fac sicut locutus es.and do just as you have spoken.

Permaneatque et magnificetur nomen tuum usque in sempiternum,And may your name remain and be magnified even for all time.et dicatur:And let it be said:Dominus exercituum Deus Israël,‘The Lord of hosts is the God of Israel.et domus David servi ejus permanens coram eo.And the house of his servant David remains forever before him.’

Tu enim,For you,Domine Deus meus,O Lord my God,revelasti auriculam servi tui, ut ædificares ei domum:have revealed to the ear of your servant that you will build a house for him.et idcirco invenit servus tuus fiduciam, ut oret coram te.And therefore your servant has found faith so that he might pray before you.

Nunc ergo Domine,Now then, O Lord,tu es Deus, you are God.et locutus es ad servum tuum tanta beneficia. And you have spoken to your servant such great benefits.

Et cœpisti benedicere domui servi tui,And you have begun to bless the house of your servant,ut sit semper coram te:so that it may be always before you.te enim, Domine, benedicente,For since it is you who is blessing, benedicta erit in perpetuum.O Lord, it shall be blessed forever.”
