Fecit autem Josias in Jerusalem Phase Domino,Now Josiah kept the Passover to the Lord in Jerusalem, quod immolatum est quartadecima die mensis primi:and it was immolated on the fourteenth day of the first month.

et constituit sacerdotes in officiis suis,And he appointed the priests in their offices, hortatusque est eos ut ministrarent in domo Domini:and he exhorted them to minister in the house of the Lord.

Levitis quoque,Also, he spoke with the Levites,ad quorum eruditionem omnis Israël sanctificabatur Domino,by whose instruction all of Israel was sanctified to the Lord, locutus est: Ponite arcam in sanctuario templi, saying: “Place the ark in the sanctuary of the temple, quod ædificavit Salomon filius David rex Israël,which Solomon, the son of David, the king of Israel, nequaquam enim eam ultra portabitis:built. For never again shall you carry it.nunc autem ministrate Domino Deo vestro,Instead, now you shall minister to the Lord your God,et populo ejus Israël.and to his people Israel.

Et præparate vos per domos et cognationes vestras in divisionibus singulorum,And prepare yourselves by your houses and families, within each division, just as David, sicut præcepit David rex Israël,the king of Israel, instructed,et descripsit Salomon filius ejus.and just as his son Solomon has written.

Et ministrate in sanctuario per familias turmasque Leviticas,And minister in the sanctuary, by the Levitical families and companies.

et sanctificati immolate Phase:And having been sanctified, fratres etiam vestros, immolate the Passover.ut possint juxta verba quæ locutus est Dominus in manu Moysi facere,And then prepare your brothers,præparate.so that they may be able to act in accord with the words which the Lord has spoken by the hand of Moses.”

Dedit præterea Josias omni populo qui ibi fuerat inventus in solemnitate Phase,After this, Josiah gave to all the people, those who had been found there at the solemnity of the Passover, agnos et hædos de gregibus et reliqui pecoris triginta millia, thirty thousand lambs and young goats from the flocks, and other kinds of small cattle, boum quoque tria millia:and also three thousand oxen.hæc de regis universa substantia. All these were from the substance of the king.

Duces quoque ejus sponte quod voverant,Also, his rulers offered what they had vowed freely, obtulerunt, tam populo quam sacerdotibus et Levitis.as much for the people as for the priests and Levites. Moreover,Porro Helcias,Hilkiah, and Zechariah,et Zacharias, and Jehiel, rulers of the house of the Lord,et Jahiel principes domus Domini dederunt sacerdotibus ad faciendum Phase pecora commixtim duo millia sexcenta, gave to the priests, in order to observe the Passover, two thousand six hundred small cattle,et boves trecentos.and three hundred oxen.

Chonenias autem, et Semeias,And Conaniah, with Shemaiah and Nethanel, etiam Nathanaël fratres ejus, necnon Hasabias, his brothers, indeed also Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad,et Jehiel, et Jozabad principes Levitarum, rulers of the Levites, gave to the rest of the Levites, dederunt ceteris Levitis ad celebrandum Phase quinque millia pecorum,in order to celebrate the Passover, five thousand small cattle,et boves quingentos.and five hundred oxen.

Præparatumque est ministerium,And the ministry was prepared.et steterunt sacerdotes in officio suo:And the priests stood in their office,Levitæ quoque in turmis, and the Levites also stood in their companies, juxta regis imperium.according to the order of the king.

Et immolatum est Phase:And the Passover was immolated.asperseruntque sacerdotes manu sua sanguinem,And the priests sprinkled the blood with their hand,et Levitæ detraxerunt pelles holocaustorum:and the Levites drew away the pelts of the holocausts.

et separaverunt ea ut darent per domos et familias singulorum,And they put these aside, so that they might give them to each one, by their houses and families,et offerrentur Domino, sicut scriptum est in libro Moysi:and so that they might be offered to the Lord, just as it was written in the book of Moses.de bobus quoque fecerunt similiter. And with the oxen, they acted similarly.

Et assaverunt Phase super ignem,And they roasted the Passover above fire, juxta quod in lege scriptum est:in accord with what was written in the law.pacificas vero hostias coxerunt in lebetibus, et cacabis,Yet truly, the victims of peace offerings they boiled in cauldrons and kettles and pots.et ollis, et festinato distribuerunt universæ plebi:And they promptly distributed these to all the common people.

sibi autem et sacerdotibus postea paraverunt,Then afterward, they made preparations for themselves and for the priests. Indeed, nam in oblatione holocaustorum et adipum usque ad noctem sacerdotes fuerunt occupati, the priests had been occupied in the oblations of the holocausts and the fat offerings, even until night. Therefore, unde Levitæ sibi et sacerdotibus filiis Aaron paraverunt novissimis.the Levites made preparations for themselves and for the priests, the sons of Aaron, last.

Porro cantores filii Asaph stabant in ordine suo,Now the singers, the sons of Asaph, were standing in their order, juxta præceptum David, et Asaph, according to the instruction of David,et Heman, et Idithun prophetarum regis:and of Asaph and Heman and Jeduthun, janitores vero per portas singulas observabant, the prophets of the king. Truly, the porters kept watch at each gate, ita ut nec puncto quidem discederent a ministerio:so as not to depart from their ministry even for one moment. And for this reason, quam ob rem et fratres eorum Levitæ paraverunt eis cibos.their brothers, the Levites, prepared foods for them.

Omnis igitur cultura Domini rite completa est in die illa,And so,ut facerent Phase, the entire worship ritual of the Lord was completed on that day,et offerrent holocausta super altare Domini,so that they observed the Passover and offered holocausts upon the altar of the Lord, juxta præceptum regis Josiæ.in accord with the precept of king Josiah.

Feceruntque filii Israël,And the sons of Israel, qui reperti fuerant ibi,who had been found there,Phase in tempore illo, kept the Passover at that time,et solemnitatem azymorum septem diebus.with the solemnity of unleavened bread, for seven days.

Non fuit Phase simile huic in Israël a diebus Samuelis prophetæ:There was no Passover similar to this one in Israel, from the days of Samuel the prophet.sed nec quisquam de cunctis regibus Israël fecit Phase sicut Josias,And neither did anyone, out of all the kings of Israel, keep such a Passover as did Josiah, sacerdotibus, et Levitis, the priests and Levites,et omni Judæ et Israël qui repertus fuerat, and all those of Judah and Israel who had been found,et habitantibus in Jerusalem.and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Octavodecimo anno regni Josiæ hoc Phase celebratum est.In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah, this Passover was celebrated.

Postquam instauraverat Josias templum,After Josiah had repaired the temple, Neco, ascendit Nechao rex Ægypti ad pugnandum in Charcamis juxta Euphraten:the king of Egypt, ascended to fight at Carchemish, beside the Euphrates.et processit in occursum ejus Josias. And Josiah went out to meet him.

At ille,But he sent messengers to him, missis ad eum nuntiis, saying:ait:“What is there between me and you,Quid mihi et tibi est,O king of Judah?rex Juda?I have not come against you today.non adversum te hodie venio,Instead, sed contra aliam pugno domum,I am fighting against another house,ad quam me Deus festinato ire præcepit:to which God instructed me to go promptly.desine adversum Deum facere,Refrain from acting against God,qui mecum est,who is with me,ne interficiat te.otherwise he may kill you.”

Noluit Josias reverti,Josiah was not willing to return.sed præparavit contra eum bellum,Instead, he prepared for war against him.nec acquievit sermonibus Nechao ex ore Dei:Neither would he agree to the words of Neco from the mouth of God.verum perrexit ut dimicaret in campo Mageddo. In truth, he traveled so that he might do battle in the field of Megiddo.

Ibique vulneratus a sagittariis,And there, having been wounded by archers, dixit pueris suis:he said to his servants:Educite me de prælio,“Lead me away from the battle.quia oppido vulneratus sum.For I have been severely wounded.”

Qui transtulerunt eum de curru in alterum currum,And they took him from the chariot, qui sequebatur eum more regio, into another chariot which was following him,et asportaverunt eum in Jerusalem:as was the custom of kings.mortuusque est,And they transported him to Jerusalem.et sepultus in mausoleo patrum suorum,And he died,et universus Judaand he was buried in the mausoleum of his fathers.et Jerusalem luxerunt eum.And all of Judah and Jerusalem mourned for him,

Jeremias maxime:most of all Jeremiah.cujus omnes cantores atque cantatrices,All the singing men and women repeat his lamentations over Josiah, usque in præsentem diem, even to the present day.lamentationes super Josiam replicant,And this has become like a law in Israel.et quasi lex obtinuit in Israël:Behold,Ecce scriptum fertur in lamentationibus.it is found written in the Lamentations.

Reliqua autem sermonum Josiæ,Now the rest of the words of Josiah,et misericordiarum ejus, and his mercies,quæ lege præcepta sunt Domini, which were instructed by the law of the Lord,

opera quoque illius prima et novissima, and also his works, the first and the last, scripta sunt in libro regum Juda et Israël.have been written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
