Tulit ergo populus terræ Joachaz filium Josiæ,Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz, the son of Josiah,et constituit regem pro patre suo in Jerusalem.and they appointed him king in place of his father, in Jerusalem.

Viginti trium annorum erat Joachaz cum regnare cœpisset,Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he had begun to reign,et tribus mensibus regnavit in Jerusalem.and he reigned for three months in Jerusalem.

Amovit autem eum rex Ægypti cum venisset in Jerusalem,Then the king of Egypt, when he had arrived in Jerusalem, removed him,et condemnavit terram centum talentis argenti, et talento auri.and condemned the land to one hundred talents of silver and one talent of gold.

Constituitque pro eo regem Eliakim fratrem ejus super Judam et Jerusalem,And he appointed Eliakim, his brother, as king in his place,et vertit nomen ejus Joakim:over Judah and Jerusalem. And he changed his name to Jehoiakim.ipsum vero Joachaz tulit secum,Truly, he took Jehoahaz with him,et abduxit in Ægyptum.and he led him away to Egypt.

Viginti quinque annorum erat Joakim cum regnare cœpisset,Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he had begun to reign,et undecim annis regnavit in Jerusalem:and he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem.fecitque malum coram Domino Deo suo.And he did evil before the Lord his God.

Contra hunc ascendit Nabuchodonosor rex Chaldæorum,Nebuchadnezzar, the king of the Chaldeans, ascended against him,et vinctum catenis duxit in Babylonem.and led him bound in chains to Babylon.

Ad quamAnd to there,et vasa Domini transtulit,he also took away the vessels of the Lord,et posuit ea in templo suo.and he placed them in his temple.

Reliqua autem verborum Joakim,But the rest of the words of Jehoiakim,et abominationum ejus quas operatus est, et quæ inventa sunt in eo,and his abominations that he worked, and the things that were found in him, continentur in libro regum Juda et Israël.are contained in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.Regnavit autem Joachin filius ejus pro eo.Then his son, Jehoiachin, reigned in his place.

Octo annorum erat Joachin cum regnare cœpisset,Jehoiachin was eight years old when he had begun to reign,et tribus mensibus ac decem diebus regnavit in Jerusalem:and he reigned for three months and ten days in Jerusalem.fecitque malum in conspectu Domini. And he did evil in the sight of the Lord.

Cumque anni circulus volveretur,And when the course of a year had turned, misit Nabuchodonosor rex, qui adduxerunt eum in Babylonem, king Nebuchadnezzar sent and brought him to Babylon, carrying away, asportatis simul pretiosissimis vasis domus Domini.at the same time, the most precious vessels of the house of the Lord. Truly,Regem vero constituit Sedeciam patruum ejus super Judam et Jerusalem.he appointed his uncle, Zedekiah, as king over Judah and Jerusalem.

Viginti et unius anni erat Sedecias cum regnare cœpisset,Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he had begun to reign.et undecim annis regnavit in Jerusalem:And he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem.

fecitque malum in oculis Domini Dei sui,And he did evil in the eyes of the Lord his God.nec erubuit faciem Jeremiæ prophetæ,And he did not show remorse before the face of the prophet Jeremiah, loquentis ad se ex ore Domini.who was speaking to him from the mouth of the Lord.

A rege quoque Nabuchodonosor recessit,Also, he withdrew from king Nebuchadnezzar, qui adjuraverat eum per Deum:who had bound him by an oath to God,et induravit cervicem suam et cor ut non reverteretur ad Dominum Deum Israël.and he hardened his own neck and his own heart, so that he did not return to the Lord, the God of Israel.

Sed et universi principes sacerdotum et populus prævaricati sunt inique juxta universas abominationes gentium, et polluerunt domum Domini quam sanctificaverat sibi in Jerusalem. Then too, all the leaders of the priests, with the people, transgressed iniquitously, in accord with all the abominations of the Gentiles. And they polluted the house of the Lord, which he had sanctified to himself in Jerusalem.

Mittebat autem Dominus Deus patrum suorum ad illos per manum nuntiorum suorum de nocte consurgens, et quotidie commonens: eo quod parceret populo et habitaculo suo. Then the Lord, the God of their fathers, sent to them, by the hand of his messengers, rising in the night and daily admonishing them. For he was lenient to his people and to his habitation.

At illi subsannabant nuntios Dei,But they ridiculed the messengers of God,et parvipendebant sermones ejus, and they gave little weight to his words, illudebantque prophetis, and they mocked the prophets, donec ascenderet furor Domini in populum ejus, until the fury of the Lord ascended against his people,et esset nulla curatio.and there was no remedy.

Adduxit enim super eos regem Chaldæorum,For he led over them the king of the Chaldeans.et interfecit juvenes eorum gladio in domo sanctuarii sui:And he put to death their young men by the sword, in the house of his sanctuary.non est misertus adolescentis,There was no pity for adolescents,et virginis, et senis, nor virgins, nor the elderly, nec decrepiti quidem, nor even for the disabled.sed omnes tradidit in manibus ejus.Instead, he delivered them all into his hands.

Universaque vasa domus Domini,And all the vessels of the house of Lord, tam majora quam minora,as much the greater as the lesser,et thesauros templi, and the treasures of the temple,et regis, and of the kinget principum, and the rulers, transtulit in Babylonem.he carried away to Babylon.

Incenderunt hostes domum Dei,The enemies set fire to the house of God,destruxeruntque murum Jerusalem:and they destroyed the wall of Jerusalem.universas turres combusserunt,They burned down all the towers.et quidquid pretiosum fuerat,And whatever was precious, demoliti sunt.they demolished.

Si quis evaserat gladium,If anyone had escaped from the sword, ductus in Babylonem servivit regihe was led into Babylon.et filiis ejus,And he served the king and his sons, donec imperaret rex Persarum, until the king of Persia would command,

et compleretur sermo Domini ex ore Jeremiæ,and the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah would be fulfilled,et celebraret terra sabbata sua:and the land would celebrate her Sabbaths.cunctis enim diebus desolationis egit sabbatum usque dum complerentur septuaginta anni. For during all the days of the desolation, she kept a Sabbath, until the seventy years were completed.

Anno autem primo Cyri regis Persarum,Then, in the first year of Cyrus, the king of the Persians,ad explendum sermonem Domini quem locutus fuerat per os Jeremiæ,in order to fulfill the word of the Lord, which he had spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah, suscitavit Dominus spiritum Cyri regis Persarum:the Lord stirred up the heart of Cyrus, the king of the Persians, qui jussit prædicari in universo regno suo, etiam per scripturam, who commanded this to be proclaimed throughout his entire kingdom, and also in writing, dicens:saying:

Hæc dicit Cyrus rex Persarum:“Thus says Cyrus, the king of the Persians:Omnia regna terræ dedit mihi Dominus Deus cæli,The Lord, the God of heaven, has given to me all the kingdoms of the earth.et ipse præcepit mihi ut ædificarem ei domum in Jerusalem,And he has instructed me that I should build for him a house in Jerusalem,quæ est in Judæa:which is in Judea.quis ex vobis est in omni populo ejus?Who among you is from his entire people?sit Dominus Deus suus cum eo, et ascendat.May the Lord his God be with him, and let him ascend.”
