Tulit autem Samuel lenticulam olei,Then Samuel took a little vial of oil,et effudit super caput ejus:and poured it on his head.et deosculatus est eum,And he kissed him, and said:et ait:“Behold,Ecce unxit te Dominus super hæreditatem suam in principem, the Lord has anointed you as first ruler over his inheritance.et liberabis populum suum de manibus inimicorum ejus qui in circuitu ejus sunt. And you shall free his people from the hands of their enemies, who are all around them.Et hoc tibi signum, quia unxit te Deus in principem. And this shall be a sign for you that God has anointed you as ruler:
Cum abieris hodie a me,When you will have departed from me this day, invenies duos viros juxta sepulchrum Rachel in finibus Benjamin, in meridie:you will find two men beside the sepulcher of Rachel, in the parts of Benjamin to the south.dicentque tibi:And they will say to you:Inventæ sunt asinæ ad quas ieras perquirendas:‘The donkeys have been found, which you had been seeking as you traveled.et intermissis pater tuus asinis,And your father, forgetting about the donkeys, sollicitus est pro vobis, has been anxious for you,et dicit:and he says,Quid faciam de filio meo?“What shall I do about my son?”’
Cumque abieris inde,And when you will have departed from there,et ultra transieris, and will have traveled farther,et veneris ad quercum Thabor, and will have arrived at the oak of Tabor, invenient te ibi tres viri ascendentes ad Deum in Bethel,in that place three men, who are going up to God at Bethel, will find you.unus portans tres hædos,One will be bringing three young goats,et alius tres tortas panis, and another three loaves of bread,et alius portans lagenam vini.and another will be carrying a bottle of wine.
Cumque te salutaverint,And when they will have greeted you, dabunt tibi duos panes, they will give you two loaves.et accipies de manu eorum. And you shall accept these from their hand.
Post hæc venies in collem Dei,After these things, you shall arrive at the hill of God,ubi est statio Philisthinorum:where the garrison of the Philistines is.et cum ingressus fueris ibi urbem,And when you will have entered the city there, obvium habebis gregem prophetarum descendentium de excelso, you will meet a company of prophets, descending from the high place,et ante eos psalterium, with a psaltery, and a timbrel,et tympanum, and a pipe,et tibiam, et citharam, and a harp before them, ipsosque prophetantes.and they will be prophesying.
Et insiliet in te spiritus Domini,And the Spirit of the Lord will spring up within you.et prophetabis cum eis,And you shall prophesy with them,et mutaberis in virum alium.and you shall be changed into another man.
Quando ergo evenerint signa hæc omnia tibi,Therefore, when these signs will have happened to you,fac quæcumque invenerit manus tua,do whatever your hand will find, quia Dominus tecum est.for the Lord is with you.
Et descendes ante me in Galgala (ego quippe descendam ad te),And you shall descend before me into Gilgal, (for I will descend to you),ut offeras oblationem,so that you may offer an oblation,et immoles victimas pacificas:and may immolate victims of peace.septem diebus expectabis,For seven days, you shall wait, donec veniam ad te,until I come to you,et ostendam tibi quid facias.and reveal to you what you should do.”
Itaque cum avertisset humerum suum ut abiret a Samuele,And so, when he had turned his shoulder, so that he might go away from Samuel, immutavit ei Deus cor aliud,God changed him to another heart.et venerunt omnia signa hæc in die illa. And all these signs occurred on that day.
Veneruntque ad prædictum collem,And they arrived at the above-stated hill,et ecce cuneus prophetarum obvius ei:and behold, a group of prophets met him.et insiluit super eum spiritus Domini,And the Spirit of the Lord leapt up within him,et prophetavit in medio eorum.and he prophesied in their midst.
Videntes autem omnes qui noverant eum heri et nudiustertius quod esset cum prophetis,Then all those who had known him yesterday and the day before, seeing that he was with the prophets, and that he was prophesying,et prophetaret, said to one other:dixerunt ad invicem: Quænam res accidit filio Cis?“What is this thing that has happened to the son of Kish?num et Saul inter prophetas?Could Saul also be among the prophets?”
Responditque alius ad alterum,And one would respond to the other, dicens:saying,Et quis pater eorum?“And who is their father?”Propterea versum est in proverbium:Because of this,Numit turned into a proverb,et Saul inter prophetas?“Could Saul also be among the prophets?”
Cessavit autem prophetare,Then he ceased to prophesy,et venit ad excelsum.and he went to the high place.
Dixitque patruus Saul ad eum,And the uncle of Saul said to him,et ad puerum ejus:and to his servant,Quo abistis?“Where did you go?”Qui responderunt:And they responded:Quærere asinas:“To seek the donkeys.quas cum non reperissemus,But when we did not find them, venimus ad Samuelem.we went to Samuel.”
Et dixit ei patruus suus:And his uncle said to him,Indica mihi quid dixerit tibi Samuel.“Tell me what Samuel said to you.”
Et ait Saul ad patruum suum:And Saul said to his uncle,Indicavit nobis quia inventæ essent asinæ.“He told us that the donkeys would be found.”De sermone autem regni non indicavit ei quem locutus fuerat ei Samuel. But the word about the kingdom, which Samuel had spoken to him, he did not reveal to him.
Et convocavit Samuel populum ad Dominum in Maspha:And Samuel called the people together, to the Lord at Mizpah.
et ait ad filios Israël:And he said to the sons of Israel:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël:“Thus says the Lord God of Israel:Ego eduxi Israël de Ægypto,I led Israel away from Egypt,et erui vos de manu Ægyptiorum, and I rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians,et de manu omnium regum qui affligebant vos.and from the hand of all the kings who were afflicting you.
Vos autem hodie projecistis Deum vestrum,But today you have rejected your God,qui solus salvavit vos de universis malis et tribulationibus vestris:who alone saved you from all your evils and tribulations. And you have said:et dixistis:‘By no means!Nequaquam:Instead, sed regem constitue super nos.appoint a king over us.’ Now therefore,Nunc ergo state coram Domino per tribus vestras, et per familias.stand in the sight of the Lord, by your tribes and by your families.”
Et applicuit Samuel omnes tribus Israël,And Samuel brought near all the tribes of Israel,et cecidit sors tribus Benjamin.and the lot fell upon the tribe of Benjamin.
Et applicuit tribum Benjamin et cognationes ejus,And he brought near the tribe of Benjamin, with its families,et cecidit cognatio Metri:and the lot fell upon the family of Matri.et pervenit usque ad Saul filium Cis.And then it went to Saul, the son of Kish.Quæsierunt ergo eum,Therefore, they sought him,et non est inventus.but he was not found.
Et consuluerunt post hæc Dominum utrumnam venturus esset illuc. And after these things, they consulted the Lord as to whether he would soon arrive there.Responditque Dominus:And the Lord responded,Ecce absconditus est domi.“Behold, he is hidden at home.”
Cucurrerunt itaque et tulerunt eum inde: stetitque in medio populi,And so they ran and brought him there. And he stood in the midst of the people,et altior fuit universo populo ab humero et sursum.and he was taller than the entire people, from the shoulders upward.
Et ait Samuel ad omnem populum:And Samuel said to all the people:Certe videtis quem elegit Dominus,“Certainly, quoniam non sit similis illi in omni populo.you see the one whom the Lord has chosen,Et clamavit omnis populus, that there is not anyone like him among all the people.”et ait:And all the people cried out and said,Vivat rex.“Long live the king!”
Locutus est autem Samuel ad populum legem regni,Then Samuel spoke to the people the law of the kingdom,et scripsit in libro, and he wrote it in a book,et reposuit coram Domino:and he stored it in the sight of the Lord.et dimisit Samuel omnem populum,And Samuel dismissed all the people, singulos in domum suam.each one to his own house.
SedAnd then Saul went away to his own house at Gibeah.et Saul abiit in domum suam in Gabaa:And a portion of the army,et abiit cum eo pars exercitus, whose hearts had been touched by God,quorum tetigerat Deus corda.went away with him.
Filii vero Belial dixerunt:Yet the sons of Belial said,Num salvare nos poterit iste?“How could this one be able to save us?”Et despexerunt eum,And they despised him,et non attulerunt ei munera:and they brought him no presents.ille vero dissimulabat se audire. But he pretended not to hear them.
