Et erat vir de Benjamin nomine Cis,Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, filius Abiel, the son of Abiel, filii Seror, the son of Zeror, filii Bechorath, the son of Becorath, filii Aphia, the son of Aphiah, filii viri Jemini, the son of a man of Benjamin, fortis robore.strong and robust.
Et erat ei filius vocabulo Saul,And he had a son called Saul, electus et bonus:an elect and good man.et non erat vir de filiis Israël melior illo:And there was not a man among the sons of Israel better than he was.ab humero et sursum eminebat super omnem populum. For he stood head and shoulders above all the people.
Perierant autem asinæ Cis patris Saul:Now the donkeys of Kish, the father of Saul,et dixit Cis ad Saul filium suum:had become lost. And Kish said to his son Saul,Tolle tecum unum de pueris,“Take with you one of the servants,et consurgens vade, et quære asinas.and rising up, go out and seek the donkeys.”Qui cum transissent per montem EphraimAnd when they had passed through mount Ephraim,
et per terram Salisa, and through the land of Shalishah,et non invenissent, and had not found them, transierunt etiam per terram Salim, they crossed also through the land of Shaalim,et non erant:and they were not there, sed et per terram Jemini, and through the land of Benjamin,et minime repererunt.and they found nothing.
Cum autem venissent in terram Suph,And when they had arrived in the land of Zuph, dixit Saul ad puerum qui erat cum eo:Saul said to the servant who was with him,Veni“Come,et revertamur, and let us return,ne forte dimiserit pater meus asinas, otherwise perhaps my father may forget the donkeys,et sollicitus sit pro nobis.and become anxious over us.”
Qui ait ei:And he said to him:Ecce vir Dei est in civitate hac,“Behold, there is a man of God in this city, vir nobilis:a noble man.omne quod loquitur,All that he says, sine ambiguitate venit.happens without fail.Nunc ergo eamus illuc,Now therefore, let us go there.si forte indicet nobis de via nostra,For perhaps he may tell us about our way, propter quam venimus.because of which we have arrived.”
Dixitque Saul ad puerum suum:And Saul said to his servant: “Behold,Ecce ibimus: quid feremus ad virum Dei?let us go. But what will we bring to the man of God?panis defecit in sitarciis nostris,The bread in our sacks has run out.et sportulam non habemus ut demus homini Dei,And we have no small gift that we might give to the man of God,nec quidquam aliud.nor anything at all.”
Rursum puer respondit Sauli,The servant again responded to Saul,et ait:and he said:Ecce inventa est in manu mea quarta pars stateris argenti:“Behold, there is found in my hand a coin of the fourth part of a stater.demus homini Dei,Let us give it to the man of God,ut indicet nobis viam nostram.so that he may reveal to us our way.”
(Olim in Israël sic loquebatur unusquisque vadens consulere Deum:(In past times, in Israel, anyone going to consult God would speak in this way,Venite, et eamus ad videntem.“Come, and let us go to the seer.”Qui enim propheta dicitur hodie,For one who is called a prophet today, vocabatur olim videns.)in past times was called a seer.)
Et dixit Saul ad puerum suum:And Saul said to his servant:Optimus sermo tuus.“Your word is very good.Veni, eamus.Come, let us go.”Et ierunt in civitatem in qua erat vir Dei.And they went into the city, where the man of God was.
Cumque ascenderent clivum civitatis,And as they were ascending the slope to the city, invenerunt puellas egredientes ad hauriendam aquam, they found some young women going out to draw water.et dixerunt eis:And they said to them,Num hic est videns?“Is the seer here?”
Quæ respondentes,And responding, dixerunt illis:they said to them:Hic est:“He is. Behold, ecce ante te, festina nunc:he is ahead of you. Hurry now.hodie enim venit in civitatem,For he came into the city today, quia sacrificium est hodie populi in excelso.since there is a sacrifice for the people today, on the high place.
Ingredientes urbem,Upon entering the city, statim invenietis eum antequam ascendat excelsum ad vescendum, you should find him immediately, before he ascends to the high place for the meal.neque enim comesurus est populus donec ille veniat:And the people will not eat until he has arrived.quia ipse benedicit hostiæ,For he blesses the victim,et deinceps comedunt qui vocati sunt.and thereafter those who were called will eat.Nunc ergo conscendite,Now therefore, go up.quia hodie reperietis eum.For you will find him today.”
Et ascenderunt in civitatem. And they ascended into the city.Cumque illi ambularent in medio urbis,And as they were walking in the midst of the city, apparuit Samuel egrediens obviam eis,Samuel appeared, advancing to meet them,ut ascenderet in excelsum.so that he might ascend to the high place.
Dominus autem revelaverat auriculam Samuelis ante unam diem quam veniret Saul,Now the Lord had revealed to the ear of Samuel, one day before Saul had arrived, dicens:saying:
Hac ipsa hora quæ nunc est,“Tomorrow, at the same hour that it is now, cras mittam virum ad te de terra Benjamin,I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin.et unges eum ducem super populum meum Israël:And you shall anoint him to be the leader over my people Israel.et salvabit populum meum de manu Philisthinorum,And he will save my people from the hand of the Philistines.quia respexi populum meum:For I have looked with favor upon my people, venit enim clamor eorum ad me.because their outcry has reached me.”
Cumque aspexisset Samuel Saulem,And when Samuel had caught sight of Saul,Dominus dixit ei:the Lord said to him:Ecce vir quem dixeram tibi:“Behold, the man about whom I spoke to you.iste dominabitur populo meo. This one shall rule over my people.”
Accessit autem Saul ad Samuelem in medio portæ,Then Saul drew near to Samuel,et ait:at the middle of the gate,Indica, and he said, oro,“Tell me,mihi,I beg you:ubi est domus videntis.where is the house of the seer?”
Et respondit Samuel Sauli,And Samuel responded to Saul, dicens:saying:Ego sum videns:“I am the seer.ascende ante me in excelsum,Ascend before me to the high place,ut comedatis mecum hodie,so that you may eat with me today.et dimittam te mane:And I will send you away in the morning.et omnia quæ sunt in corde tuo indicabo tibi. And I shall reveal to you everything that is in your heart.
Et de asinis quas nudiustertius perdidisti,And concerning the donkeys, which were lost the day before yesterday,ne sollicitus sis,you should not be anxious, quia inventæ sunt.for they have been found.Et cujus erunt optima quæque Israël?And all the best things of Israel, for whom should they be?nonne tibi et omni domui patris tui? Will they not be for you and for all your father’s house?”
Respondens autem Saul,And responding, Saul said:ait: Numquid non filius Jemini ego sum de minima tribu Israël,“Am I not a son of Benjamin, the least tribe of Israel,et cognatio mea novissima inter omnes familias de tribu Benjamin?and are not my kindred the last among all the families from the tribe of Benjamin?quare ergo locutus es mihi sermonem istum? So then, why would you speak this word to me?”
Assumens itaque Samuel SaulemAnd so Samuel,et puerum ejus, taking Saul and his servant, introduxit eos in triclinium, brought them into the dining room,et dedit eis locum in capite eorum qui fuerant invitati:and he gave them a place at the head of those who had been invited.erant enim quasi triginta viri. For there were about thirty men.
Dixitque Samuel coco:And Samuel said to the cook,Da partem quam dedi tibi,“Present the portion that I gave to you,et præcepi ut reponeres seorsum apud te.and which I instructed you to set apart beside you.”
Levavit autem cocus armum,Then the cook lifted up the shoulder,et posuit ante Saul.and he placed it before Saul.Dixitque Samuel:And Samuel said:Ecce quod remansit:“Behold, what remains, pone ante te, et comede, set it before you and eat.quia de industria servatum est tibi quando populum vocavi. For it was preserved for you intentionally, when I called the people.”Et comedit Saul cum Samuele in die illa. And Saul ate with Samuel on that day.
Et descenderunt de excelso in oppidum,And they descended from the high place into the town,et locutus est cum Saule in solario:and he spoke with Saul in the upper room.stravitque Saul in solario,And he set out a bed for Saul in the upper room,et dormivit.and he slept.
Cumque mane surrexissent,And when they had risen in the morning,et jam elucesceret, and it now began to be light, vocavit Samuel Saulem in solario,Samuel called to Saul in the upper room, dicens:saying,Surge,“Rise up,et dimittam te.so that I may send you on.”Et surrexit Saul:And Saul rose up.egressique sunt ambo,And they both departed, ipse videlicet, that is to say,et Samuel.he and Samuel.
Cumque descenderent in extrema parte civitatis,And as they were descending to the very limit of the city,Samuel dixit ad Saul:Samuel said to Saul:Dic puero ut antecedat nos et transeat:“Tell the servant to go ahead of us, and to continue on.tu autem subsiste paulisper,But as for you, stay here a little while,ut indicem tibi verbum Domini.so that I may reveal the word of the Lord to you.”
