Et annuntiaverunt David,And they reported to David, dicentes:saying, “Behold,Ecce Philisthiim oppugnant Ceilam et diripiunt areas.the Philistines are fighting against Keilah, and they are plundering the grain stores.”

Consuluit ergo David Dominum,Therefore, dicens:David consulted the Lord,Num vadam, saying,et percutiam Philisthæos istos?“Shall I go and strike down these Philistines?”Et ait Dominus ad David:And the Lord said to David,Vade,“Go,et percuties Philisthæos,and you shall strike down the Philistines,et Ceilam salvabis.and you shall save Keilah.”

Et dixerunt viri qui erant cum David ad eum:And the men who were with David said to him,Ecce nos hic in Judæa consistentes timemus:“Behold, we continue in fear here in Judea;quanto magis si ierimus in Ceilam adversum agmina Philisthinorum?how much more so, if we go into Keilah against the troops of the Philistines?”

Rursum ergo David consuluit Dominum. Therefore, David consulted the Lord again.Qui respondens, ait ei:And responding, he said to him:Surge,“Rise up,et vade in Ceilam:and go into Keilah.ego enim tradam Philisthæos in manu tua.For I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.”

Abiit ergo DavidTherefore,et viri ejus in Ceilam,David and his men went into Keilah.et pugnavit adversum Philisthæos:And they fought against the Philistines,et abegit jumenta eorum, and they took away their cattle,et percussit eos plaga magna:and they struck them with a great slaughter.et salvavit David habitatores Ceilæ.And David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.

Porro eo tempore quo fugiebat Abiathar filius Achimelech ad David in Ceilam, ephod secum habens descenderat. And in that time, when Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, was in exile with David, he had descended to Keilah, having an ephod with him.

Nuntiatum est autem Sauli quod venisset David in Ceilam:Then it was reported to Saul that David had gone to Keilah.et ait Saul:And Saul said:Tradidit eum Deus in manus meas,“The Lord has delivered him into my hands.conclususque est introgressus urbem,For he is enclosed,in qua portæ et seræ sunt.having entered into a city which has gates and bars.”

Et præcepit Saul omni populo ut ad pugnam descenderet in Ceilam,And Saul instructed all the people to descend in order to fight against Keilah,et obsideret David et viros ejus.and to besiege David and his men.

Quod cum David rescisset quia præpararet ei Saul clam malum,And when David had realized that Saul had secretly prepared evil against him, dixit ad Abiathar sacerdotem:he said to Abiathar, the priest,Applica ephod.“Bring the ephod.”

Et ait David:And David said:Domine Deus Israël,“O Lord God of Israel, audivit famam servus tuus, quod disponat Saul venire in Ceilam, your servant has heard a report that Saul is planning to go to Keilah,ut evertat urbem propter me:so that he may overturn the city because of me.

si tradent me viri Ceilæ in manus ejus? Will the men of Keilah deliver me into his hands?et si descendet Saul,And will Saul descend, sicut audivit servus tuus?just as your servant has heard?Domine Deus Israël,O Lord God of Israel, indica servo tuo.reveal to your servant.”Et ait Dominus:And the Lord said,Descendet.“He will descend.”

Dixitque David:And David said,Si tradent me viri Ceilæ,“Will the men of Keilah deliver me,et viros qui sunt mecum, and the men who are with me,in manus Saul?into the hands of Saul?”Et dixit Dominus:And the Lord said,Tradent.“They will deliver you.”

Surrexit ergo David et viri ejus quasi sexcenti,Therefore, David, and his men of about six hundred,et egressi de Ceila, rose up, and, departing from Keilah, huc atque illuc vagabantur incerti:they wandered here and there, aimlessly.nuntiatumque est Sauli quod fugisset David de Ceila,And it was reported to Saul that David had fled from Keilah,et salvatus esset:and was saved.quam ob rem dissimulavit exire. For this reason, he chose not to go out.

Morabatur autem David in deserto in locis firmissimis,Then David stayed in the desert, in very strong places.mansitque in monte solitudinis Ziph,And he stayed on a mount in the wilderness of Ziph,in monte opaco:on a shady mount.quærebat eum tamen Saul cunctis diebus,Nevertheless, Saul was seeking him every day.et non tradidit eum Deus in manus ejus. But the Lord did not deliver him into his hands.

Et vidit David quod egressus esset Saul ut quæreret animam ejus. And David saw that Saul had gone out, so that he might seek his life.Porro David erat in deserto Ziph in silva. Now David was in the desert of Ziph, in the woods.

Et surrexit Jonathas filius Saul,And Jonathan, the son of Saul,et abiit ad David in silvam, rose up and went to David in the woods,et confortavit manus ejus in Deo:and he strengthened his hands in God.dixitque ei:And he said to him:

Ne timeas:“Do not be afraid.neque enim inveniet te manus Saul patris mei,For the hand of my father, Saul, will not find you.et tu regnabis super Israël,And you shall reign over Israel.et ego ero tibi secundus:And I will be second to you.sed et Saul pater meus scit hoc.And even my father knows this.”

Percussit ergo uterque fœdus coram Domino:Therefore, they both struck a pact before the Lord.mansitque David in silva,And David stayed in the woods.Jonathas autem reversus est in domum suam. But Jonathan returned to his house.

Ascenderunt autem Ziphæi ad Saul in Gabaa,Then the Ziphites ascended to Saul at Gibeah, dicentes:saying:Nonne ecce David latitat apud nos in locis tutissimis silvæ,“Behold,in colle Hachila,is not David hidden with us in very secure places in the woods on the hill of Hachilah,quæ est ad dexteram deserti?which is to the right of the desert?

Nunc ergo,Now therefore, sicut desideravit anima tua ut descenderes,if your soul has desired to descend, descende:then descend.nostrum autem erit ut tradamus eum in manus regis. Then it will be for us to deliver him into the hands of the king.”

Dixitque Saul:And Saul said:Benedicti vos a Domino,“You have been blessed by the Lord.quia doluistis vicem meam. For you have grieved for my situation.

Abite ergo, oro,Therefore, I beg you,et diligentius præparate,go forth, and prepare diligently,et curiosius agite, and act carefully.et considerate locum ubi sit pes ejus,And consider the place where his foot may be,vel quis viderit eum ibi:and who may have seen him there.recogitat enim de me,For he thinks, concerning me,quod callide insidier ei.that I craftily plan treachery against him.

Considerate, et videte omnia latibula ejus in quibus absconditur:Consider and seek out all his hiding places, in which he may be concealed.et revertimini ad me ad rem certam,And return to me with certainty about the matter,ut vadam vobiscum.so that I may go with you.Quod si etiam in terram se abstruserit,But if he would even press himself into the earth, perscrutabor eum in cunctis millibus Juda.I will search him out, amid all the thousands of Judah.”

At illi surgentes abierunt in Ziph ante Saul:And rising up,David autemthey went to Ziph before Saul.et viri ejus erant in deserto Maon,But David and his men were in the desert of Maon,in campestribus ad dexteram Jesimon.in the plain to the right of Jeshimon.

Ivit ergo SaulThen Saul and his allies went to seek him.et socii ejus ad quærendum eum.And this was reported to David.Et nuntiatum est David:And immediately, statimque descendit ad petram,he descended to the rock,et versabatur in deserto Maon:and he moved about in the desert of Maon.quod cum audisset Saul,And when Saul had heard of it,persecutus est David in deserto Maon.he pursued David in the desert of Maon.

Et ibat Saul ad latus montis ex parte una:And Saul went to one side of the mountain.David autem et viri ejus erant in latere montis ex parte altera. But David and his men were on the other side of the mountain.Porro David desperabat se posse evadere a facie Saul:Then David was despairing that he would be able to escape from the face of Saul.itaque Saul et viri ejus in modum coronæ cingebant David et viros ejus,And Saul and his men enclosed David and his men in the manner of a crown,ut caperent eos.so that they might capture them.

Et nuntius venit ad Saul,And a messenger came to Saul, dicens:saying,Festina,“Hurryet veni, and come, quoniam infuderunt se Philisthiim super terram.because the Philistines have poured themselves out upon the land.”

Reversus est ergo Saul desistens persequi David,Therefore, Saul turned back, ceasing in the pursuit of David,et perrexit in occursum Philisthinorum:and he traveled to meet the Philistines.propter hoc vocaverunt locum illum,For this reason, they called that place,Petram dividentem.the Rock of Division.
