Accidit quoque ut ibi esset vir Belial,And it happened that there was, in that place, a man of Belial, nomine Seba, whose name was Sheba, filius Bochri, the son of Bichri, vir Jemineus:a man of Benjamin.et cecinit buccina,And he sounded the trumpet,et ait:and he said:Non est nobis pars in David,“There is no portion for us in David, neque hæreditas in filio Isai:nor any inheritance in the son of Jesse.revertere in tabernacula tua,Return to your own tents,Israël.O Israel.”

Et separatus est omnis Israël a David,And all of Israel separated from David, secutusque est Seba filium Bochri:and they were following Sheba, the son of Bichri.viri autem Juda adhæserunt regi suo a Jordane usque Jerusalem. But the men of Judah clung to their king, from the Jordan as far as Jerusalem.

Cumque venisset rex in domum suam in Jerusalem,And when the king had entered his house at Jerusalem, tulit decem mulieres concubinas quas dereliquerat ad custodiendam domum,he took the ten women concubines, whom he had left behind to care for the house,et tradidit eas in custodiam, and he put them into custody, alimenta eis præbens:allowing them provisions.et non est ingressus ad eas,But he did not enter to them. Instead, sed erant clausæ usque in diem mortis suæ in viduitate viventes.they were enclosed, even until the day of their deaths, living as widows.

Dixit autem rex Amasæ:Then the king said to Amasa,Convoca mihi omnes viros Juda in diem tertium,“Summon to me all the men of Judah on the third day,et tu adesto præsens.and you shall be present also.”

Abiit ergo Amasa ut convocaret Judam,Therefore, Amasa went away, so that he might summon Judah.et moratus est extra placitum quod ei constituerat rex.But he delayed beyond the agreed time that the king had appointed to him.

Ait autem David ad Abisai:And David said to Abishai:Nunc magis afflicturus est nos Seba filius Bochri quam Absalom:“Now Sheba, the son of Bichri, will afflict us more so than Absalom did.tolle igitur servos domini tui,Therefore, take the servants of your lord,et persequere eum,and pursue him,ne forte inveniat civitates munitas, otherwise he may find fortified cities,et effugiat nos.and escape from us.”

Egressi sunt ergo cum eo viri Joab,And so, the men of Joab departed with him,Cerethi quoque et Phelethi:along with the Cherethites and the Pelethites.et omnes robusti exierunt de Jerusalem ad persequendum Seba filium Bochri. And all the able-bodied men went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba, the son of Bichri.

Cumque illi essent juxta lapidem grandem qui est in Gabaon,And when they were beside the great stone, which is in Gibeon,Amasa veniens occurrit eis.Amasa came to meet them.Porro Joab vestitus erat tunica stricta ad mensuram habitus sui,Now Joab was wearing a close-fitting coat of equal length with his garment.et desuper accinctus gladio dependente usque ad ilia,And over these, he was girded with a sword hanging down to his thigh,in vagina, qui fabricatus levi motu egredi poterat,in a scabbard which was made so that the sword could be removed with the least motion,et percutere.and then strike.

Dixit itaque Joab ad Amasam:Then Joab said to Amasa, “Be well,Salve mi frater. Et tenuit manu dextera mentum Amasæ,my brother.” And he held Amasa by the chin with his right hand, quasi osculans eum.as if to kiss him.

Porro Amasa non observavit gladium quem habebat Joab:But Amasa did not notice the sword that Joab had.qui percussit eum in latere,And he struck him in the side,et effudit intestina ejus in terram, and his intestines poured out to the ground.nec secundum vulnus apposuit:And he did not inflict a second wound,et mortuus est.and he died.Joab autem,Then Joabet Abisai frater ejus, and his brother Abishai pursued Sheba, persecuti sunt Seba filium Bochri.the son of Bichri.

Interea quidam viri,Meanwhile, certain men,cum stetissent juxta cadaver Amasæ, de sociis Joab, from the company of Joab, when they had stopped beside the dead body of Amasa, dixerunt:said: “Behold,Ecce qui esse voluit pro Joab comes David.the one who wished to be in the place of Joab, the companion of David.”

Amasa autem conspersus sanguine jacebat in media via.Now Amasa was covered with blood, and was lying in the middle of the road.Vidit hoc quidam vir,A certain man saw this, quod subsisteret omnis populus ad videndum eum, with all the people standing nearby to look at him,et amovit Amasam de via in agrum, and he removed Amasa from the road into a field.operuitque eum vestimento,And he covered him with a garment,ne subsisterent transeuntes propter eum.so that those passing by would not stop because of him.

Amoto ergo illo de via,Then, when he had been removed from the road, transibat omnis vir sequens Joab ad persequendum Seba filium Bochri.all the men continued on, following Joab in the pursuit of Sheba, the son of Bichri.

Porro ille transierat per omnes tribus Israël in Abelam et Bethmaacha:Now he had passed through all the tribes of Israel into Abel and Bethmaacah.omnesque viri electi congregati fuerant ad eum.And all the elect men had gathered together to him.

Venerunt itaque, et oppugnabant eum in Abela et in Bethmaacha,And so, they went and besieged him at Abel and Bethmaacah.et circumdederunt munitionibus civitatem,And they surrounded the city with siege works,et obsessa est urbs:and the city was blockaded.omnis autem turba quæ erat cum Joab, moliebatur destruere muros. Then the entire crowd who were with Joab strove to destroy the walls.

Et exclamavit mulier sapiens de civitate:And a wise woman exclaimed from the city:Audite,“Listen, audite:listen, dicite Joab:and say to Joab:Appropinqua huc,Draw near,et loquar tecum.and I will speak with you.”

Qui cum accessisset ad eam,And when he had drawn near to her,ait illi:she said to him,Tu es Joab?“Are you Joab?”Et ille respondit:And he responded,Ego.“I am.”Ad quem sic locuta est:And she spoke in this way to him,Audi sermones ancillæ tuæ.“Listen to the words of your handmaid.”Qui respondit:He responded,Audio.“I am listening.”

Rursumque illa:And again she spoke:Sermo, inquit, dicebatur in veteri proverbio:“A word was said in the old proverb,Qui interrogant,‘Those who would inquire, interrogent in Abela:let them inquire in Abel.’et sic perficiebant. And so they would reach a conclusion.

Nonne ego sum quæ respondeo veritatem in Israël,Am I not the one who responds with the truth in Israel?et tu quæris subvertere civitatemAnd yet you are seeking to overthrow the city,et evertere matrem in Israël?and to overturn a mother in Israel!quare præcipitas hæreditatem Domini? Why would you cast down the inheritance of the Lord?”

Respondensque Joab,And responding,ait:Joab said:Absit,“May this be far,absit hoc a me:may this be far from me!non præcipito,May I not cast down,neque demolior.and may I not demolish.

Non sic se habet res,The matter is not as you said.sed homo de monte Ephraim,Rather, a man from mount Ephraim,Seba filius Bochri cognomine,Sheba, the son of Bichri, by name, levavit manum suam contra regem David:has lifted up his hand against king David.tradite illum solum, et recedemus a civitate.Deliver him alone, and we will withdraw from the city.”Et ait mulier ad Joab:And the woman said to Joab,Ecce caput ejus mittetur ad te per murum.“Behold, his head will be thrown down to you from the wall.’

Ingressa est ergo ad omnem populum,Therefore, she entered to all the people,et locuta est eis sapienter:and she spoke to them wisely.qui abscissum caput Seba filii Bochri projecerunt ad Joab. And they cut off the head of Sheba, the son of Bichri,Et ille cecinit tuba, and they threw it down to Joab.et recesserunt ab urbe,And he sounded the trumpet, unusquisque in tabernacula sua:and they withdrew from the city,Joab autem reversus est Jerusalem ad regem.each one to his own tent. But Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

Fuit ergo Joab super omnem exercitum Israël:Thus Joab was over the entire army of Israel. And Benaiah,Banaias autem filius Jojadæ super Cerethæos et Phelethæos:the son of Jehoiada, was over the Cerethites and Phelethites.

Aduram vero super tributa:Yet truly, Adoram was over the tributes.porro Josaphat filius Ahilud,And Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud,a commentariis:was the keeper of records.

Siva autem, scriba:Now Sheva was the scribe.Sadoc vero et Abiathar, sacerdotes. And truly Zadok and Abiathar were the priests.

Ira autem Jairites erat sacerdos David. But Ira, the Jairite, was the priest of David.
