Confirmatum est igitur regnum in manu Salomonis,And so the kingdom was confirmed in the hand of Solomon,et affinitate conjunctus est Pharaoni regi Ægypti:and he was joined with Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, by affinity.accepit namque filiam ejus,For he took his daughter,et adduxit in civitatem David, and he led her into the city of David, donec compleret ædificans domum suam, until he completed building his own house,et domum Domini, and the house of the Lord,et murum Jerusalem per circuitum.and the wall of Jerusalem all around.
Attamen populus immolabat in excelsis:But still the people immolated in the high places.non enim ædificatum erat templum nomini Domini usque in diem illum. For no temple had been built to the name of the Lord, even to that day.
Dilexit autem Salomon Dominum,Now Solomon loved the Lord, ambulans in præceptis David patris sui, walking in the precepts of David, his father, excepto quod in excelsis immolabat, except that he immolated in the high places,et accendebat thymiama.and he burned incense.
Abiit itaque in Gabaon,And so, he went away to Gibeon,ut immolaret ibi: illud quippe erat excelsum maximum:so that he might immolate there; for that was the greatest high place.mille hostias in holocaustum obtulit Salomon super altare illud in Gabaon.Solomon offered upon that altar, at Gibeon, one thousand victims as holocausts.
Apparuit autem Dominus Salomoni per somnium nocte,Then the Lord appeared to Solomon, through a dream in the night, saying, dicens: Postula quod vis ut dem tibi.“Request whatever you wish, so that I may give it to you.”
Et ait Salomon:And Solomon said:Tu fecisti cum servo tuo David patre meo misericordiam magnam,“You have shown great mercy to your servant David, sicut ambulavit in conspectu tuo in veritatemy father,et justitia, because he walked in your sight in truth and justice,et recto corde tecum:and with an upright heart before you.custodisti ei misericordiam tuam grandem,And you have kept your great mercy for him,et dedisti ei filium sedentem super thronum ejus, and you have given him a son sitting upon his throne, sicut est hodie.just as it is this day.
Et nunc Domine Deus,And now, O Lord God,tu regnare fecisti servum tuum pro David patre meo:you have caused your servant to reign in place of David, ego autem sum puer parvulus,my father. But I am a small child,et ignorans egressum et introitum meum.and I am ignorant of my entrance and departure.
Et servus tuus in medio est populi quem elegisti,And your servant is in the midst of the people that you have chosen, populi infiniti,an immense people, qui numerari et supputari non potest præ multitudine.who are not able to be numbered or counted because of their multitude.
Dabis ergo servo tuo cor docile,Therefore, give to your servant a teachable heart,ut populum tuum judicare possit,so that he may be able to judge your people,et discernere inter bonum et malum.and to discern between good and evil.Quis enim poterit judicare populum istum,For who will be able to judge this people, populum tuum hunc multum?your people, who are so many?”
Placuit ergo sermo coram Domino,And the word was pleasing before the Lord, quod Salomon postulasset hujuscemodi rem.that Solomon had requested this kind of thing.
Et dixit Dominus Salomoni:And the Lord said to Solomon:Quia postulasti verbum hoc,“Since you have requested this word,et non petisti tibi dies multos, and you have not asked for many daysnec divitias,or for wealth for yourself, aut animas inimicorum tuorum, nor for the lives of your enemies, sed postulasti tibi sapientiam ad discernendum judicium:but instead you have requested for yourself wisdom in order to discern judgment:
ecce feci tibi secundum sermones tuos, behold,et dedi tibi cor sapiensI have done for you according to your words,et intelligens, and I have given you a wise and understanding heart,in tantum ut nullus ante te similis tui fuerit,so much so that there has been no one like you before you,nec post te surrecturus sit.nor anyone who will rise up after you.
Sed et hæc quæ non postulasti,But also the things for which you did not ask, dedi tibi:I have given to you, divitias scilicet, namely wealthet gloriam, and glory,ut nemo fuerit similis tui in regibus cunctis retro diebus.so that no one has been like you among the kings in the all days before.
Si autem ambulaveris in viis meis,And if you will walk in my ways,et custodieris præcepta mea et mandata mea,and keep my precepts and my commandments, sicut ambulavit pater tuus, just as your father walked, longos faciam dies tuos.I will lengthen your days.”
Igitur evigilavit Salomon,Then Solomon awakened,et intellexit quod esset somnium:and he understood that it was a dream.cumque venisset Jerusalem,And when he had arrived in Jerusalem, stetit coram arca fœderis Domini,he stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord,et obtulit holocausta, and he offered holocaustset fecit victimas pacificas, and made victims of peace offerings,et grande convivium universis famulis suis.and he held a great feast for all his servants.
Tunc venerunt duæ mulieres meretrices ad regem,Then two women harlots went to the king, steteruntque coram eo:and they stood before him.
quarum una ait:And one of them said:Obsecro,“I beg you,mi domine:my lord, egoI and this woman were living in one house,et mulier hæc habitabamus in domo una,and I gave birth,et peperi apud eam in cubiculo.with her in the room.
Tertia autem die postquam ego peperi,Then, peperiton the third day after I gave birth,et hæc:she also gave birth.et eramus simul,And we were together, nullusque alius nobiscum in domo, with no other person with us in the house, exceptis nobis duabus.only the two of us.
Mortuus est autem filius mulieris hujus nocte:Then this woman’s son died in the night.dormiens quippe oppressit eum.For while sleeping, she smothered him.
Et consurgens intempestæ noctis silentio,And rising up in the silent depths of the night, tulit filium meum de latere meo,she took my son from my side, ancillæ tuæ dormientis, while I,et collocavit in sinu suo:your handmaid, suum autem filium, was sleeping, qui erat mortuus, and she set him in her bosom.posuit in sinu meo. Then she placed her dead son in my bosom.
Cumque surrexissem mane ut darem lac filio meo,And when I had arisen in the morning, so that I might give milk to my son, apparuit mortuus:he appeared to be dead.quem diligentius intuens clara luce,But gazing upon him more diligently in the light of day, deprehendi non esse meum quem genueram.I realized that he was not mine, whom I had born.”
Responditque altera mulier:And the other woman responded:Non est ita ut dicis,“It is not such as you say.sed filius tuus mortuus est,Instead, your son is dead, meus autem vivit.but mine is alive.”E contrario illa dicebat:To the contrary, she said:Mentiris: filius quippe meus vivit,“You are lying. For my son lives,et filius tuus mortuus est.and your son is dead.”Atque in hunc modum contendebant coram rege. And in this manner, they were contending before the king.
Tunc rex ait:Then said the king:Hæc dicit:“This one says,Filius meus vivit,‘My son is alive,et filius tuus mortuus est:and your son is dead.’et ista respondit:And the other responds,Non,‘No,sed filius tuus mortuus est, instead your son is dead, meus autem vivit.but mine lives.’”
Dixit ergo rex:Therefore the king said,Afferte mihi gladium.“Bring a sword to me.”Cumque attulissent gladium coram rege,And when they had brought a sword before the king,
Dividite,he said, inquit, infantem vivum in duas partes,“Divide the living infant in two parts,et date dimidiam partem uni, et dimidiam partem alteri.and give a half part to the one and a half part to the other.”
Dixit autem mulier,But the woman, cujus filius erat vivus, whose son was alive,ad regem (commota sunt quippe viscera ejus super filio suo):said to the king, for her heart was moved concerning her son,Obsecro,“I beg you, domine,my lord, date illi infantem vivum, give the living infant to her,et nolite interficere eum.and do not kill him.”E contrario illa dicebat:To the contrary, the other said,Nec mihi nec tibi sit,“Let it be neither for me, nor for you,sed dividatur.instead divide it.”
Respondit rex,The king respondedet ait:and said:Date huic infantem vivum,“Give the living infant to this woman,et non occidatur:and do not kill it.hæc est enim mater ejus. For she is his mother.”
Audivit itaque omnis Israël judicium quod judicasset rex,Then all of Israel heard about the judgment that the king had judged,et timuerunt regem, and they feared the king, videntes sapientiam Dei esse in eo ad faciendum judicium.seeing that the wisdom of God was in him to accomplish judgment.
