Factum est autem cum levare vellet Dominus Eliam per turbinem in cælum,Now it happened that, ibant Eliaswhen the Lord willed to lift up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind,et Eliseus de Galgalis.Elijah and Elisha were going out of Gilgal.

Dixitque Elias ad Eliseum:And Elijah said to Elisha:Sede hic,“Remain here.quia Dominus misit me usque in Bethel. For the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.”Cui ait Eliseus:And Elisha said to him,Vivit Dominus,“As the Lord lives,et vivit anima tua,and as your soul lives, quia non derelinquam te.I will not forsake you.”Cumque descendissent Bethel,And when they had descended to Bethel,

egressi sunt filii prophetarum qui erant in Bethel, the sons of the prophets, who were at Bethel, went out to Elisha.ad Eliseum, et dixerunt ei:And they said to him,Numquid nosti quia hodie Dominus tollet dominum tuum a te?“Do you not know that today the Lord will take away your lord from you?”Qui respondit:And he responded:Et ego novi: silete.“I know it. Be silent.”

Dixit autem Elias ad Eliseum:Then Elijah said to Elisha:Sede hic,“Remain here.quia Dominus misit me in Jericho. For the Lord has sent me to Jericho.”Et ille ait:And he said,Vivit Dominus,“As the Lord lives,et vivit anima tua,and as your soul lives, quia non derelinquam te.I will not forsake you.”Cumque venissent Jericho,And when they had arrived at Jericho,

accesserunt filii prophetarum qui erant in Jericho, the sons of the prophets, who were at Jericho,ad Eliseum, drew near to Elisha.et dixerunt ei:And they said to him,Numquid nosti quia Dominus hodie tollet dominum tuum a te?“Do you not know that today the Lord will take away your lord from you?”Et ait: Et ego novi:And he said: “I know it.silete.Be silent.”

Dixit autem ei Elias:Then Elijah said to him:Sede hic,“Remain here.quia Dominus misit me usque ad Jordanem. For the Lord has sent me as far as the Jordan.”Qui ait:And he said,Vivit Dominus,“As the Lord lives,et vivit anima tua,and as your soul lives, quia non derelinquam te.I will not forsake you.” And so,Ierunt igitur ambo pariter, the two of them continued on together.

et quinquaginta viri de filiis prophetarum secuti sunt eos,And fifty men from the sons of the prophets followed them, qui et steterunt e contra, and they stood opposite them, longe:at a distance.illi autem ambo stabant super Jordanem. But the two of them were standing above the Jordan.

Tulitque Elias pallium suum,And Elijah took his cloak,et involvit illud, and he rolled it up,et percussit aquas:and he struck the waters,quæ divisæ sunt in utramque partem, which were divided into two parts.et transierunt ambo per siccum. And they both went across on dry ground.

Cumque transissent, Elias dixit ad Eliseum:And when they had gone across, Elijah said to Elisha,Postula quod vis ut faciam tibi,“Ask what you wish that I may do for you, antequam tollar a te.before I am taken from you.”Dixitque Eliseus:And Elisha said, “I beg you,Obsecro ut fiat in me duplex spiritus tuus.that twice your spirit may be accomplished in me.”

Qui respondit:And he responded:Rem difficilem postulasti:“You have requested a difficult thing.attamen si videris me quando tollar a te,Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, erit tibi quod petisti:you will have what you requested.si autem non videris, non erit. But if you do not see, it shall not be.”

Cumque pergerent,And as they continued on,et incedentes sermocinarentur, they were conversing while walking.ecce currus igneus,And behold,et equi ignei diviserunt utrumque:a fiery chariot with fiery horses divided the two.et ascendit Elias per turbinem in cælum. And Elijah ascended by a whirlwind into heaven.

Eliseus autem videbat, et clamabat:Then Elisha saw it, and he cried out:Pater mi,“My father, pater mi,my father!currus Israël, et auriga ejus. The chariot of Israel with its driver!”Et non vidit eum amplius:And he saw him no more.apprehenditque vestimenta sua,And he took hold of his own garments,et scidit illa in duas partes.and he tore them into two parts.

Et levavit pallium Eliæ,And he picked up the cloak of Elijah, quod ceciderat ei:which had fallen from him.reversusque stetit super ripam Jordanis,And turning back, he stood above the bank of the Jordan.

et pallio Eliæ,And he struck the waters with the cloak of Elijah, quod ceciderat ei,which had fallen from him, percussit aquas, and they were not divided.et non sunt divisæ:And he said,et dixit:“Where is the God of Elijah,Ubi est Deus Eliæ etiam nunc?even now?”Percussitque aquas,And he struck the waters,et divisæ sunt huc atque illuc, and they were divided here and there.et transiit Eliseus. And Elisha went across.

Videntes autem filii prophetarum qui erant in Jericho e contra,Then the sons of the prophets, who were at Jericho, watching from a distance, dixerunt: Requievit spiritus Eliæ super Eliseum.said, “The spirit of Elijah has rested upon Elisha.”Et venientes in occursum ejus,And approaching to meet him, adoraverunt eum proni in terram, they reverenced him prone on the ground.

dixeruntque illi:And they said to him, “Behold,Ecce cum servis tuis sunt quinquaginta viri fortes qui possunt ire, et quærere dominum tuum, with your servants there are fifty strong men, who are able to go forth and to seek your lord.ne forte tulerit eum spiritus Domini, et projecerit eum in unum montium,For perhaps, the Spirit of the Lord has taken him up and cast him upon some mountain, aut in unam vallium.or into some valley.”Qui ait:But he said,Nolite mittere.“Do not send them.”

Coëgeruntque eum donec acquiesceret,And they urged him,et diceret:until he acquiesced and said,Mittite.“Send them.”Et miserunt quinquaginta viros:And they sent fifty men.qui cum quæsissent tribus diebus,And after they had searched for three days, non invenerunt.they did not find him.

Et reversi sunt ad eum:And they returned to him,at ille habitabat in Jericho, for he was living in Jericho.et dixit eis:And he said to them:Numquid non dixi vobis:“Did I not say to you,Nolite mittere?‘Do not send them?’”

Dixerunt quoque viri civitatis ad Eliseum:Also, the men of the city said to Elisha:Ecce habitatio civitatis hujus optima est,“Behold, this city is a very good habitation, sicut tu ipse, domine,as you yourself perceive, perspicis: sed aquæ pessimæ sunt,O lord. But the waters are very bad,et terra sterilis.and the ground is barren.”

At ille ait:And so he said,Afferte mihi vas novum,“Bring a new vessel to me,et mittite in illud sal.and place salt in it.”Quod cum attulissent,And when they had brought it,

egressus ad fontem aquarum misit in illum sal,he went out to the source of the waters,et ait:and he cast the salt into it.Hæc dicit Dominus:And he said:Sanavi aquas has,“Thus says the Lord:et non erit ultra in eis mors,I have healed these waters, neque sterilitas.and no longer shall there be death or barrenness in them.”

Sanatæ sunt ergo aquæ usque in diem hanc,Then the waters were healed, even to this day, juxta verbum Elisei quod locutus est.in accord with the word of Elisha, which he spoke.

Ascendit autem inde in Bethel:Then he went up from there into Bethel.cumque ascenderet per viam,And as he was ascending along the way, pueri parvi egressi sunt de civitate, little boys departed from the city.et illudebant ei, dicentes:And they were mocking him, saying:Ascende calve,“Go up, bald head!ascende calve.Go up, bald head!”

Qui cum respexisset,And when he had looked back, vidit eos,he saw them,et maledixit eis in nomine Domini:and he cursed them in the name of the Lord.egressique sunt duo ursi de saltu,And two bears went out from the forest,et laceraverunt ex eis quadraginta duos pueros.and they wounded forty-two boys among them.

Abiit autem inde in montem Carmeli,Then he went away from there to mount Carmel.et inde reversus est in Samariam. And he returned from there into Samaria.
