Cum vero moras faceret Tobias,In truth, causa nuptiarum, when Tobias was delayed because of the marriage celebration, sollicitus erat pater ejus Tobias, his father Tobit was worried, dicens:saying:Putas quare moratur filius meus,“Why do you think my son is delayed, aut quare detentus est ibi?or why has he been detained there?

Putasne Gabelus mortuus est,Do you think that Gabael has died,et nemo reddet illi pecuniam?and that no one will repay him the money?”

Cœpit autem contristari nimis ipse,And so he began to be exceedingly sad,et Anna uxor ejus cum eo:both he and his wife Anna with him.et cœperunt ambo simul flere,And they both began to weep together,eo quod die statuto minime reverteretur filius eorum ad eos.because their son did not at least return to them on the appointed day.

Flebat igitur mater ejus irremediabilibus lacrimis,But his mother wept inconsolable tears, and also said:atque dicebat:“Woe, woe to me,Heu, heu me,O my son.fili mi! ut quid te misimus peregrinari,Why did we send you to journey far away, lumen oculorum nostrorum, you: the light of our eyes, baculum senectutis nostræ,the staff of our old age, solatium vitæ nostræ,the solace of our life, spem posteritatis nostræ?the hope of our posterity?

omnia simul in te uno habentes,Having all things together as one in you,te non debuimus dimittere a nobis.we ought not to have dismissed you from us.”

Cui dicebat Tobias: Tace,And Tobit was saying to her: “Be calm,et noli turbari: sanus est filius noster:and do not be troubled. Our son is safe.satis fidelis est vir ille,That man, with whom we sent him,cum quo misimus eum.is faithful enough.”

Illa autem nullo modo consolari poterat,Yet she was by no means able to be consoled. But,sed quotidie exiliens circumspiciebat, leaping up every day, she looked all round,et circuibat vias omnes per quas spes remeandi videbatur, and traveled around all the ways, by which there seemed any hope that he might return,ut procul videret eum, si fieri posset, venientem.so that she might possibly see him coming from afar.

At vero Raguel dicebat ad generum suum:In truth, Raguel said to his son-in-law,Mane hic,“Remain here,et ego mittam nuntium salutis de te ad Tobiam patrem tuum.and I will send a message of your health to your father Tobit.”

Cui Tobias ait:And Tobias said to him,Ego novi quia pater meus et mater mea modo dies computant,“I know that my father and my mother have now counted the days,et cruciatur spiritus eorum in ipsis.and their spirit must be tortured within them.”

Cumque verbis multis rogaret Raguel Tobiam,And when Raguel had repeatedly petitioned Tobias,et ille eum nulla ratione vellet audire, tradidit ei Saram, and he was by no means willing to listen to him,et dimidiam partem omnis substantiæ suæ in pueris,he delivered Sarah to him, and half of all his substance:in puellis, in pecudibus, with men and women servants,in camelis, with sheep,et in vaccis, camels, and cows,et in pecunia multa:and with much money.et salvum atque gaudentem dimisit eum a se,And he dismissed him away, in safety and gladness, from him,

dicens:saying:Angelus Domini sanctus sit in itinere vestro,“May the holy Angel of the Lord be with your journey, perducatque vos incolumes, and may he lead you through unharmed,et inveniatis omnia recte circa parentes vestros, and may you discover that all is right concerning your parents,et videant oculi mei filios vestros priusquam moriar.and may my eyes see your sons before I die.”

Et apprehendentes parentes filiam suam,And the parents, osculati sunt eam:taking hold of their daughter,et dimiserunt ire, kissed her and let her go:

monentes eam honorare soceros, admonishing her to honor her father-in-law,diligere maritum,to love her husband, regere familiam,to guide the family, gubernare domum,to govern the household,et seipsam irreprehensibilem exhibere.and to behave irreproachably herself.
