Tunc vocavit ad se Tobias filium suum,Then Tobit called his son to him, dixitque ei:and he said to him,Quid possumus dare viro isti sancto,“What are we able to give to this holy man,qui venit tecum?who accompanied you?”
Respondens Tobias,Tobias, answering, dixit patri suo:said to his father:Pater,“Father, quam mercedem dabimus ei?what wages shall we give him?aut quid dignum poterit esse beneficiis ejus? And what could be worthy of his benefits?
Me duxit et reduxit sanum,He led me and he brought me back safely.pecuniam a Gabelo ipse recepit,He received the money from Gabael.uxorem ipse me habere fecit,He caused me to have my wife.et dæmonium ab ea ipse compescuit:And he confined the demon away from her.gaudium parentibus ejus fecit,He caused joy to her parents. Myself, meipsum a devoratione piscis eripuit,he rescued from being devoured by the fish. As for you,te quoque videre fecit lumen cæli,he also caused you to see the light of heaven.et bonis omnibus per eum repleti sumus. And so, we have been filled with all good things through him.Quid illi ad hæc poterimus dignum dare? What could we possibly give to him that would be worthy of these things?
Sed peto te,But I implore you, pater mi,my father,ut roges eum, si forte dignabitur medietatem de omnibus quæ allata sunt, sibi assumere.to ask him if he would perhaps deign to take for himself half of all the things that have been brought.”
Et vocantes eum,And calling him, the father especially, pater scilicet et filius, and the son, they took him aside.tulerunt eum in partem:And they began to petition him,et rogare cœperunt ut dignaretur dimidiam partem omnium quæ attulerant acceptam habere.so that he would deign to accept ownership of one half part of all things that they had brought.
Tunc dixit eis occulte:Then he said to them privately:Benedicite Deum cæli,“Bless the God of heaven,et coram omnibus viventibus confitemini ei,and confess to him in the sight of all who live, quia fecit vobiscum misericordiam suam.for he has acted in his mercy toward you.
Etenim sacramentum regis abscondere bonum est:For it is good to conceal the secret of a king, opera autem Dei revelare et confiteri honorificum est.just as it is also honorable to reveal and to confess the works of God.
Bona est oratio cum jejunio,Prayer with fasting is good,et eleemosyna magis quam thesauros auri recondere:and almsgiving is better than hiding away gold in storage.
quoniam eleemosyna a morte liberat,For almsgiving delivers from death,et ipsa est quæ purgat peccata, et facit invenire misericordiam et viam æternam.and the same is what purges sins and makes one able to find mercy and everlasting life.
Qui autem faciunt peccatum et iniquitatem,But those who commit sinhostes sunt animæ suæ.and iniquity are enemies to their own soul.
Manifesto ergo vobis veritatem,Therefore, I reveal the truth to you,et non abscondam a vobis occultum sermonem.and I will not hide the explanation from you.
Quando orabas cum lacrimis,When you prayed with tears,et sepeliebas mortuos, and buried the dead,et derelinquebas prandium tuum, and left behind your dinner,et mortuos abscondebas per diem in domo tua,and hid the dead by day in your house,et nocte sepeliebas eos,and buried them by night:ego obtuli orationem tuam Domino.I offered your prayer to the Lord.
Et quia acceptus eras Deo,And because you were acceptable to God,necesse fuit ut tentatio probaret te.it was necessary for you to be tested by trials.
Et nunc misit me Dominus ut curarem te,And now, the Lord has sent me to cure you,et Saram uxorem filii tui a dæmonio liberarem.and to free Sarah, your son’s wife, from the demon.
Ego enim sum Raphaël angelus,For I am the Angel Raphael, unus ex septem qui adstamus ante Dominum.one of seven, who stand before the Lord.”
Cumque hæc audissent,And when they had heard these things, turbati sunt, they were troubled,et trementes ceciderunt super terram in faciem suam.and being seized with fear, they fell upon the ground on their face.
Dixitque eis angelus:And the Angel said to them:Pax vobis:“Peace be to you.nolite timere.Fear not.
Etenim cum essem vobiscum,For when I was with you,per voluntatem Dei eram:I was there by the will of God.ipsum benedicite,Bless him,et cantate illi.and sing to him.
Videbar quidem vobiscum manducare et bibere:Indeed, sed ego cibo invisibili,I seemed to eat and drink with you,et potu qui ab hominibus videri non potest, but I make use of an invisible food and drink, utor.which cannot be seen by men.
Tempus est ergo ut revertar ad eum qui me misit:Therefore, it is time that I return to him who sent me.vos autem benedicite Deum,But as for you, bless God,et narrate omnia mirabilia ejus.and describe all his wonders.”
Et cum hæc dixisset,And when he had said these things,ab aspectu eorum ablatus est,he was taken from their sight,et ultra eum videre non potuerunt.and they were not able to see him any longer.
Tunc prostrati per horas tres in faciem,Then, lying prostrate for three hours upon their face, benedixerunt Deum:they blessed God.et exsurgentes narraverunt omnia mirabilia ejus. And rising up, they described all his wonders.
